Stable and easy to use but it could be more flexible, scalable, and have better support
Pros and Cons
  • "It's easy to use."
  • "They need more support for image backups."

What is our primary use case?

We use Dell EMC NetWorker for several solutions we have had such as Exchange, Microsoft SQL, Linux, Windows File, File data backups, and Oracle Databases.

What is most valuable?

It's easy to use.

What needs improvement?

NetWorker is coming to end-of-life in a couple of years, and even Dell has said that they are not going to continue with it. They no longer develop it.

They put their efforts into the new Power Protect products instead.

Support for the cloud could be better and with the existing features, it could be a bit more robust. Also, the flexibility could be improved.

They need more support for image backups.

For how long have I used the solution?

The company has used this solution for 15-20 years.

We are not working with the latest version.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's a pretty stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's not scalable. Once you have created a backup server and you have configured it for a specific load, then you can't change it.

You have to estimate how big the load is that you are going to have. If that increases, suddenly, you will need to create a new server.

I wouldn't suggest that it is scalable. Scalability is an area that needs improvement.

We are an admin group and we have several technicians that look into it as well. We have 40 users in our organization.

How are customer service and support?

Experience with technical support varies, sometimes they are very good and other times they are not that good.

However, their higher levels of Technical support are very good.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I used other solutions in earlier employments. This company has been using NetWorker for as much as 20 years.

How was the initial setup?

I did not participate in the installation. It was already installed when I arrived.

We have a team of 5 engineers to deploy and maintain this solution.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

They are not cheap. I don't know the fees specifically but they should definitely be cheaper. Everything should be cheaper :-)

What other advice do I have?

Since they are going to stop developing this solution, I cannot recommend it to others.

I would rate Dell EMC NetWorker a seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Great automatization and backup capabilities with good training available from resellers
Pros and Cons
  • "The backup capabilities and the automatization of the backup - along with the potential to make the back up on a virtual machine - are the solution's most valuable aspects."
  • "The licensing rules are difficult to navigate and understand."

What is our primary use case?

We use the Dell EMC NetWorker to make backups for our virtual environment. We have about 14 servers and we backup everything using NetWorker.

What is most valuable?

The backup capabilities and the automatization of the backup - along with the potential to make the back up on a virtual machine - are the solution's most valuable aspects.

It's not just about making a backup on a file level. It's about backing up the entire machine all at once that's very useful for us.

What needs improvement?

Technical support could be improved. They shouldn't just serve those who speak English. The technical support should be in the national language of the country they are servicing and not only in English due to the fact that it's sometimes difficult for us to explain all the things that are going wrong in an unfamiliar language. It creates a communication barrier and makes getting problems solved harder.

The solution is not easy to administer unless you are very familiar with the product.

The licensing rules are difficult to navigate and understand.

The administrator's interface should be much easier to navigate.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for four years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It would be hard to judge the scalability as we have never tried to expand the solution. However, I suspect it may be challenging as the solution has difficult licensing rules.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is okay, however, they only offer service in English. If you don't speak English, or English is not your first language, you will have issues with communicating.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Before Dell EMC NetWorker we used to use Novell NetWare and the Novell Network and Backup. We needed to switch due to the fact that Novell is no longer available in Europe.

How was the initial setup?

We didn't handle the implementation ourselves. I wouldn't be able to discuss the procedure or if it ultimately was complex or straightforward.

The reseller took about one month to help us internally understand how to work with the solution. We were grateful for the help as the solution is not easy to administer.

We have two people who are responsible for the solution and the backups.

What about the implementation team?

Our reseller handled the initial setup on our behalf. They did a good job. We were satisfied with their level of service.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Licensing rules are very complicated in NetWorker. The license depends on, in one version, the value of the backup data, and, in another, the physical workstation. It changes from version to version.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I do not know other solutions very well. I know of Hewlett Packard's backup solution. That said, I only know NetWorker and Avamar. These two products are from Dell.

What other advice do I have?

We're Dell customers. We don't have a business relationship with the company.

I am the administrator of our Dell EMC NetWorker and I make backups of the servers and also run the solution. We only backup our server. We do not back up a user's workstation. The only backups are made by the administrators.

From my perspective, Dell EMC NetWorker is a good solution to make backups. I'd rate the solution nine out of ten. I'd rate it higher if the administrator's interface was easier to navigate.

Stable and scalable with good tech support and an easy setup
Pros and Cons
  • "Technical support is good."
  • "There should be total integration of the replication and cloud logistic back up on cloud."

What needs improvement?

Dell EMC should be more aggressive with its marketing; such as is done by Commvault.

There should be total integration of the replication and cloud logistic back up on cloud.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability has been fine thus far.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is definitely scalable.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support is good.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is completely easy, not hard at all.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing is okay.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Commvault does more aggressive marketing than Dell EMC.

What other advice do I have?

Features are constantly evolving. Initially, I dealt with ERP backup, but we have since moved to the environment. Nowadays, there are cloud-related features. We position ourselves to meet the customer's needs, not just concerning any one given feature.

My advice is that a person who designs a solution for the backup or backup management, ensure that, in respect of the application, all agents take care not to encounter problems once the solution has been deployed.

I rate Dell EMC Networker as an eight out of ten.

A solid backup software with a wide spectrum of plugins, but not easy to understand and deploy
Pros and Cons
  • "The best feature of Dell EMC NetWorker is its wide spectrum of available plugins for each and every software that you can back up, such as SAP HANA, Oracle, AXI-based machines, or Dell-based machines. Whatever you want to back up, you can do it with Dell EMC NetWorker. It is a very solid backup software. It is the oldest backup software from EMC, and it comes from Dell EMC's legacy."
  • "It is not easy to understand and deploy. It is complex in nature. Simplicity is not there. When we deploy it, the customer always needs some training from us. To make it user friendly, there should be one agent that can be used to back up every product. Dell EMC NetWorker uses so many user agents. In PowerProtect Data Manager, you can just install its VM, import that VM into vCenter, and you can start to do backups directly from vCenter. However, in Dell EMC NetWorker, you always need one server, and from that server, you need to initiate all backups. You must know the interface and the CLI. It is not user friendly. It would be a great feature if we can deploy Dell EMC NetWorker on a virtual machine, like Avamar. The additional features that are required in Dell EMC NetWorker are already available in PowerProtect Data Manager and Avamar. Therefore, there is no need to enhance Dell EMC NetWorker. It would be better if they can just rename it to PowerProtect Data Manager or Avamar."

What is our primary use case?

I am a business partner of Dell EMC. For POC purposes, we deploy and use it on-premises to get an overview of each and every feature of Dell EMC NetWorker.

We use Dell EMC NetWorker for physical workload as well as virtual workload. We have deployed it on-premises as well as on the cloud for our clients. We have deployed it for a number of projects, and we are completely satisfied with it.

What is most valuable?

The best feature of Dell EMC NetWorker is its wide spectrum of available plugins for each and every software that you can back up, such as SAP HANA, Oracle, AXI-based machines, or Dell-based machines. Whatever you want to back up, you can do it with Dell EMC NetWorker. It is a very solid backup software. It is the oldest backup software from EMC, and it comes from Dell EMC's legacy.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Dell EMC NetWorker for more than six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It always provides you ethical backup. When you reach your maximum license capability, it never stops you from doing your backups. This is a caring feature of this solution that I always liked.

When you get a license for one terabyte, you can back up 100 terabytes of data. They never stop you from doing that ethically. We always need to follow the ethics of any software. Customers in Pakistan are using over commercial licenses, and they are happy with this feature.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is excellent from the pricing point of view. It is free with Data Protection Suite. Similarly, when you purchase Avamar, Dell EMC NetWorker is free with one terabyte license capacity. Its price is very competitive.

What other advice do I have?

We have deployed this solution for many companies and for every kind of company, such as banks, logistics companies. One of the biggest companies in Pakistan is using Dell EMC NetWorker since 2015, and they are very happy with it. Another company with a big data center is using this solution since 2016, and they are also happy. There is no challenge in adapting and having this solution in your environment.

Dell EMC NetWorker is a very good software for physical workloads and virtual workloads. It is known for certain features. PowerProtect Data Manager is a next-generation backup software. It also provides you the simplicity and ease of use. It is not complex. I always recommend using the latest backup software. I would first recommend PowerProtect Data Manager. Avamar would be number two, and Dell EMC NetWorker would be number three.

I would rate Dell EMC NetWorker a seven out of ten.

Supports legacy products well but the container support is lacking
Pros and Cons
  • "The support for legacy products is very good."
  • "I would like to see better support for the container systems, and we would like to see more support for image backups instead of pure file backups."

What is our primary use case?

We are using Dell EMC NetWorker for backup and restore purposes.

What is most valuable?

The support for legacy products is very good.

What needs improvement?

The components for container support such as Docker and Kubernetes need improvement. They are lacking.

Stability needs improvement. Also, scalability could be better.

I would like to see better support for the container systems, and we would like to see more support for image backups instead of pure file backups. Image backups are faster.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for more than 15 years.

We are not using the latest version, we are one major version behind.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have had some issues with stability, but we can't say for certain that it is an issue with the client's environment, or if it's an issue with the server.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's a scalable solution.

We have approximately 5,000 clients per backup server, and we have six servers.

How are customer service and technical support?

We have not contacted technical support. We have only had a few issues that we were able to resolve.

What other advice do I have?

For newer software, EMC has expressed that they will not be supporting NetWorker for much longer. It is my understanding that they will continue for the next two years only.

We are looking for new technology, and we are in the middle of an RFI.

I would not recommend Dell EMC NetWorker, as the product will end in a few years.

I would rate Dell EMC NetWorker a seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

The response time of the tech support is swift, but the security features need backup and encryption
Pros and Cons
  • "The response time of the tech support is swift. The support is fantastic."
  • "The security features need backup and encryption. It would be nice if they added this feature. I would also like to be able to decrypt when restoring the security features. Hackers can sense these vulnerabilities today, and we need to have our enterprise prepared."

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case is for our critical servers. We have servers across Unix and Linux environments. We back up our critical servers daily, some are scheduled and some are done manually.

What is most valuable?

It has deduplication capabilities, where you have two similar data sets. This helps to speed up backup processes because it takes a shorter amount of time to do a backup because it has the deduplication feature already. Though, you have to buy this deduplication software separately from the license.

What needs improvement?

The security features need backup and encryption. It would be nice if they added this feature. I would also like to be able to decrypt when restoring the security features. Hackers can sense these vulnerabilities today, and we need to have our enterprise prepared.

Overall, it isn't intuitive enough. It is a bit complex and not evolving with the technology.

For how long have I used the solution?

More than five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is 80 percent out of 100. It hardly goes down. When there are issues, we can check the logs and see how to resolve it. We have never had the whole system fail.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is pretty scalable. This is not an issue.

How is customer service and technical support?

The response time of the tech support is swift. The support is fantastic.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was straightforward. The configuration was not difficult. We used user guides which helped us with best practices.

What other advice do I have?

When choosing a solution, I always consider:

  • Support
  • Availability of parts
  • The technology of the solution.

Multiple Useful Features And Long List Of Supported OSs

What is most valuable?

  • Very nice tools (nsrwatch, nsradmin) in CLI for administration, monitoring, and management. And GUI is available with enterprise level as well.
  • NetWorker’s commands are executed directly from shell/command line (you don’t need to log in to the DB or to any other kind of tool).
  • Very good backward and forward compatibility between NetWorker’s versions. You are not limited by higher version on backup client side.
  • Availability of cumulative hot fixes.
  • NetWorker server is supported on Windows and Linux OSs (unlike Commvault).
  • List of supported OSs and their versions is really long and it is the same for DBs and applications.
  • Provided documentation from EMC is quite good and well organized.
  • Block based backup and parallel save stream features are really helpful for classic backup of big file systems and lot of small files.
  • DDboost protocol speeds up backups and saves bandwidth of your LAN.
  • Possibility to create and use your own scripts in backup process or in administration.

How has it helped my organization?

Backup admins don’t need to dedicate so much time to installation and configuration of backups.

What needs improvement?

NetWorker’s code needs improvement. There are so many bugs in each version, so I have to wait until the last cumulative hotfix of each service pack is released, to be sure that I will not affect production and create more work for myself.

For how long have I used the solution?

Since 2006.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I had some issues in the past, but I fixed them by updating the product. I would recommend installation of new, major or minor releases of EMC NetWorker if the second service pack of each version, and sixth or higher cumulative hotfix of that version, are both available.

How are customer service and technical support?

This is difficult question. Honestly, EMC NetWorker technical support is not very helpful for me, because I have much more experience with it than the engineers who are initially assigned to an issue. I have to wait till my service request is moved to a higher level of support and, often, by the time that happens, I have fixed many service requests by myself.

On the other hand, EMC engineers are friendly and try to help as much as possible, so if you are not an experienced customer they can search in knowledge database for your issue and fix it via a WebEx session. This can be done over a live chat session or via a regular service request.

You can enable notifications (at the EMC support page) for security and technical alerts as well, so you will be informed about any big issues quickly.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I used Hiback from NovaStor a long time ago, but it was not as good as NetWorker. I switched because I was no longer responsible for the Hiback backup environment; I focused on EMC NetWorker.

How was the initial setup?

Initial setup of EMC NetWorker is really easy work if you have basic knowledge of OSs, LAN and SAN, if needed. (A basic IT background is really needed). Just a few clicks in Windows or the installation of a few RPMs in Linux. I really like that EMC provides specific RPM packages and not only binaries in its archive, which are installed by installation script.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Ask your EMC representative for discount. They can provide really good discounts.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I did not do so.

What other advice do I have?

Use EMC Data Domain (DD) system and EMC NetWorker. It really is number one on the market in backup and recovery solutions.

Provides backup automation and monitoring centralization.

What is most valuable?

Provides backup automation and monitoring centralization. Having easy scalability of the covered data zone is also a big advantage.

How has it helped my organization?

All environment backups are monitored by a central management console. This allows us to have a global view and the statistics of data protection in the overall data center.

What needs improvement?

Native reports are not really user-friendly. This is the case because EMC wants to sell DPA, which can give more reports/details. I think this policy is unfair.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using this solution for seven years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

There were stability issues, especially with version 9.0. The backup integration failed many times and the resolution was related to bugs fixed in later releases.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

There were no scalability issues.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We did not use a different solution before this one.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was complex. In fact, the NetWorker Management Console is divided into many tables. To configure a simple backup, you have to switch between many tables. You must have a good understanding of the configuration logic before you can manage this tool.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Use capacity licensing instead of the traditional one. With capacity licenses, you have all the capabilities enabled. With traditional licenses, you have to activate functionalities one by one.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

  • TSM : This solution does not offer the media server option, which means that all data that has to be backed up has to be sent to the TSM backup server before being backed up to media devices. In the NetWorker solution, we can define media nodes which write data directly to the backup devices. There is no need to move data to backup server beforehand. Also in NetWorker, we can define different retention policies for backups and copies. In TSM, the same retention applies to both the first copy and the second copy.
  • DPM: This Microsoft solution is well defined for Microsoft environments, but for VMware and others (SAP, Oracle) EMC NetWorker suits better and does offer more functionalities/options.
  • Veeam: Suitable for VMware environments only. EMC NetWorker capabilities are greater regarding other platforms (Microsoft, SAP).
  • NetBackup: This is the real EMC NetWorker competitor. For price reasons, EMC NetWorker was chosen in our case.

What other advice do I have?

Take a training course before implementing this solution, especially if you are used to managing another backup solution. The backup integration generally takes a while to stabilize. However, once you have done it, you can forget about it. The backup will run automatically and backed up data will expire automatically based on configured policies.
