Oracle GoldenGate Initial Setup

The setup with the classic GoldenGate architecture was easy. Oracle has now moved to Microservices Architecture. It is a real pain. There are a lot of new things we have to learn. I rate the ease of setup of the classic architecture a seven out of ten. For Microservices, I rate the ease of setup a three out of ten.

The deployment takes a couple of hours. We need one system administrator to deploy the tool. We need to maintain the tool. We are a team of four people. We need at least three people for maintenance. The time taken for maintenance depends on how big the environment is. We spend a lot of time on maintenance because our environment is big.

The initial setup is a bit complicated compared to a solution such as SharePlex where you just run the installer and update one config file. GoldenGate requires a lot of configuration and there are some limitations. The initial setup took close to a week and was carried out in-house with our team.

GoldenGate is quite difficult to set up. The process can take you a few days.

When it comes to maintenance and things like patch updates, it's relatively straightforward as long as you're paying the support fees. You get that as part of the license.

I find the initial setup process of Oracle GoldenGate to be straightforward and haven't encountered any complexities with it. I would rate the easiness of the initial setup as an eight out of ten.

The deployment process for Oracle GoldenGate begins with understanding the customer's replication needs. It is essential to clarify which data to replicate and any limitations. Documentation and workflow planning follow, listing objects and target environments. For major changes like database migrations, a careful cut-over plan is crucial. The deployment time for Oracle GoldenGate varies based on the data size and initial load type, but with good connectivity, it can be quick.

Maintenance isn't difficult and mainly involves proactive monitoring to address issues before they occur. Additional attention may be needed only if businesses want to adjust configurations or address performance lags.

The deployment of Oracle Golden Gate is handled by the Oracle team. On boarding resources, such as administrators, is a requirement for the client, which may be complex for them. However, for us, it is not complex as it is not under our control.

The product's initial setup phase was very simple.

The solution can be deployed in a day, and it can be installed on the cloud or on an on-premises model, as it is a simple process. It takes a day to integrate some of the tables. Sometimes, deploying the tool on an on-premises model takes a day or two because you need to install the software and the patch.

The complexity of the initial setup is dependent on the platform being used.

The deployment, on average, takes between two to four hours per server if we don't use packaging services like Ansible for infrastructure deployment systems.

The solution is very straightforward to set up. It's not overly complex. I'd rate the implementation process nine out of ten in terms of ease of setup.

The time it takes to deploy depends on the platform. For example, a Linux or Oracle database may take a few minutes up to one hour.

I think that the installation of this product is very straightforward. I am sure I will encounter some problems and other issues because I installed a sample configuration of GoldenGate. This is a sample project where I have installed a huge database. It gives me the opportunity to encounter some problems and issues. I hope that I do not see any problems, but I am pretty sure I will experience some things that will go wrong.

The installation of Oracle's GoldenGate is fairly different from other similar applications. It is straightforward but at the same time more difficult. I think that is partly because other solutions will have about one-quarter of the features when compared to GoldenGate.

The difficulty with the initial setup depends on the type of project you are setting up. Is it a small, midsize, or large project? You have to look at the type of vertical or line of business. If the business is in banking, the solution has to be secure. In the telecom industry, fast transactions and latency come into the picture. These factors come in during enterprise design.

The initial setup is very easy with structured data because Oracle is a master in that area. However, storage becomes an issue when discussing unstructured and semi-structured data. GoldenGate does provide access to all these things, and there isn't much of a challenge from the integration perspective with the solution.

I rate the initial setup a nine out of ten.

Oracle GoldenGate's initial setup is very simple because Oracle has a dedicated version for every database, whether Oracle or non-Oracle. For the initial setup between the source and the solution, the ease of setup depends on the configuration and the business requirement. It does not depend only on the technology but on the customer's requirements. If you have a very complex replication, it needs a more complicated setup. It depends on each task.

We can't comment that it's always easy to have Oracle GoldenGate, and we can set it up in a day or two. Sometimes you can set it up within a few hours; other times, it needs very deep understanding and preparation before going to Oracle Golden Gate.

You might need some help from ODI or other tools to prepare your data and get ready. It will be easier if everything is clear and there is an understanding of the mapping between the source and destination, objects, and attributes. However, you cannot have a definite answer for all cases.

Oracle GoldenGate is quite complex to set up and support, though it has powerful features. Deployment could be completed within days or weeks, depending on your database and how your storage structure is implemented. The process may require some introduction and workarounds for it to go smoothly. It highly depends on the database you're using.

OGG technology is not simple. The first setup took almost six months because we had a hard time finding OGG specialists on the market.

There are three support teams in the project. We have a support team for infrastructure management, a team of DBAs to manage the Exadata, and an operations team to manage the 3000 databases (sources). And we also have Oracle's support for bugs and problems that we encounter along the way.

In previous versions, the solution wasn't so easy to implement. In the latest version of the solution, they've made it really straightforward. It's much less complex than it was previously.

How long deployment takes depends on your formation and your design. If you want to do two more samples just for feature comparing, then it will take maybe three to four hours, if that. However, if you want to do some complex configurations, while it depends on the customer, it will take longer. How much of a database they want to initiate with GoldenGate will factor in on the length of time it will take. If the size is bigger by one million or even 200,000, then it will take much longer.

The initial setup of this solution is of medium difficulty. It is not straightforward; however, it is not as complex as it looks.

For a single deployment that has two sites, I would expect the process to take less than two hours, although it depends on the complexity of the replication.

An example of a more complicated configuration is where only a subset of the tables are being replicated, and the flow of data is different in both directions. Setting this up can take a very long time, and incur a large cost because of coding time.

We have three people to manage and maintain this solution. This includes making changes to the database. For the monitoring and altering, one person is sufficient and it will not take one hundred percent of their time.
