Easy to use, simple to maintain, and offers free trials
Pros and Cons
  • "It has great free trials that allow end users to test a large variety of their products before deciding to buy the full product."
  • "I would like to see more advanced free versions."

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution mostly for the backup sections, VTL and Hyper-v physical tape drive pass-through.

How has it helped my organization?

I would definitely, recommend this product. I have been dealing with support for over three years and normally support is the biggest grievance we have in the IT industry. However, support is great, including after-sales support. Sales representatives were knowledgeable and very helpful whether you use the free or paid versions.

This is perfect for mainstream organizations. Even small businesses can use it. They cover legacy methods and all new methods in terms of hypervisors and backup methodologies. I work for an organization that has standalone hosts in rural areas in Africa where tape backup is still a thing. With the assistance of StarWind we were able to share a backup device on "Hyper-V" as Hyper-v does not support pass-through natively.

This is a fantastic software that is highly recommended for the virtualization of storage and for backup methodologies.

What is most valuable?

The VTL feature is useful as StarWind is the only organization that is suited to the business needs of companies that still run legacy EHR systems.

We have over 30 sites that utilize this technology, and it is very simple and easy to use. Installing the software and maintaining it is very simple. Support and after-sales support are amazing.

It has great free trials that allow end users to test a large variety of their products before deciding to buy the full product.

The team is very knowledgeable, helpful, and willing to see if they can cater to your business needs,

What needs improvement?

I would like them to release a GUI on the free version

They need to build an interface that will interact with the VTL with a media changer.

I would like to see more advanced free versions.

A suggestion box or feedback box would be a good start with the products.

We need the support of newer VTL technologies and older ones, from LTO4 all the way to LTO8, on one interface.

It would be helpful to have integration with a StarWind backup appliance instead of having a second software to manage the VTL files and operations.

They need to allow us to download older versions of the software and licenses.

It's easy to configure and manage from the GUI console
Pros and Cons
  • "Virtual SAN runs on iSCSI, which is free and easy to configure. It's easy to manage from StarWind's GUI console, and it only required a few extra switch ports."
  • "It would be helpful if StarWind provided more precise and detailed documentation explaining how to configure the solution in various scenarios, including the advantages and disadvantages of each."

What is our primary use case?

We're using Starwind as a failover cluster for load balancing and increased availability.

How has it helped my organization?

We had no failover solution before, so if our standalone VMware server went down, we'd be out of operation until we restored from backup. Now we have a Hyper-V cluster with shared storage. We can lose one server and stay online. Failover happens smoothly, recovery and maintenance are less stressful, and we no longer need to worry about downtime. When we tested StarWind, we confirmed that the high availability performs as expected. That level of confidence helps me sleep better at night.

What is most valuable?

We only had to purchase two new servers and no other storage or networking equipment. Virtual SAN runs on iSCSI, which is free and easy to configure. It's easy to manage from StarWind's GUI console, and it only required a few extra switch ports. StarWind has specialized in storage solutions for many years, and its track record reassures us that the solution will continue to exist and be supported in the future. I scheduled an interactive validation and tuning session before we went live. I found this to be very valuable, and it proved to us how much the company is committed to its product.

What needs improvement?

It would be helpful if StarWind provided more precise and detailed documentation explaining how to configure the solution in various scenarios, including the advantages and disadvantages of each.

I'd also like a mechanism for notifying us when updates are available as well as a visual interface for iSCSI and physical storage. A mobile app for alerts and notifications would be helpful, too. We should still have access to security patches even if we don't pay for support. Lastly, StarWind should make it easier to perform an orderly shutdown of the entire environment in a power outage when everything is running on battery.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been using StarWind Virtual SAN for less than a year

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We had an old standalone VMware server hosting several virtual machines that we wanted to replace with something highly available at a low cost. I researched and found StarWind Virtual SAN to be the best solution. We only had to purchase two new servers and no other storage or networking equipment.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I'd recommend purchasing at least one year of support. It helps to have support on the initial configuration.

What other advice do I have?

I rate StarWind Virtual SAN nine out of 10.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Flexible and easy to use with great support
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution is also quite flexible. As an example, other vSAN solutions that we looked at had more stringent requirements regarding mixed HDD/SSD storage which wouldn't have worked in our environment."
  • "The main thing I would like to see improved is the level of documentation."

What is our primary use case?

We needed a reliable shared storage solution for our VMware vSphere Essentials solution so we could implement vMotion and High Availability features. We decided to utilise a vSAN solution to reduce costs after looking at the price of external storage solutions.

In our environment, we have a 3-server VMware vSphere Essentials Plus solution that consists of 16 x HDD and 8 x SDD on-server storage. The solution is attached to 1GB network for production but we also have 10GB network connections available for direct-connectivity between servers.

The StarWind vSAN solution was implemented as a hyper-converged solution meaning that everything runs on the VMware vSphere solution.

How has it helped my organization?

The StarWind vSAN solution was implemented according to our project plan with minimal outages to existing workloads. We have had no issues with the solution and it works very well with minimal administrative effort.

Recently, we had a memory failure that caused one of our VMware servers to crash. Due to the shared storage provided by the StarWind vSAN, all virtual machines on the failed server were able to failover to another server. Our helpdesk didn't receive any user complaints during the time that this happened. Once we resolved the issue, the shared storage resynched itself automatically.

We now have the ability to run critical workloads on the VMware infrastructure and have already proceeded to migrate active directory and SAP Business One workloads onto this platform.

What is most valuable?

We have found the solution surprisingly simple to use. The management console allows us to monitor the solution and we have configured email alerts to alert us about critical issues. These alerts have been proven to work in an actual failure scenario, for example, when we had a memory issue with one of our servers that caused the entire server to crash. The management console also allows us to monitor the solution performance and provides us with access to system logs.

The level of support provided by StarWind both during pre-sales and post-implementation has been excellent. The solution validation session with StarWind engineers was one of the best we have experienced and the vendor has also demonstrated a willingness to create a long-term relationship.

The solution is also quite flexible. As an example, other vSAN solutions that we looked at had more stringent requirements regarding mixed HDD/SSD storage which wouldn't have worked in our environment.

What needs improvement?

The main thing I would like to see improved is the level of documentation. I had some initial difficulties understanding the solution which could have been solved via additional documentation aimed at newcomers to their solution. Although the solution does admittedly have many moving parts, I found that internal knowledge transfer to my peers was not that difficult. Hence I'm convinced that better documentation would have helped.

I would also like to see a better system implemented for obtaining updates for solution components. The system at the moment works on a request/response model.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been using this solution since the start of this year (2021).

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution has proven to be reliable with the need for minimal administrative effort. During an actual failure with memory on one of our servers, everything worked exactly as planned. We didn't even receive any issues/complaints from users via our helpdesk.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

During the solution validation session with the vendor, we spoke about benchmarking the product. After performing the recommended tests, we were satisfied that the solution would meet our performance needs (both in terms of storage and networking).

How are customer service and technical support?

We haven't had any issues with the solution so have had no need to request service/technical support. However, our experience during our project makes us believe we are in good hands if we ever need anything in the future.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We did not use a different solution. We initially implemented our VMware vSphere Essentials solution using direct storage and didn't have access to features such as vMotion and high availability. The StarWind vSAN solution allowed us to implement shared storage and pave the way to migrate critical workloads onto the VMware infrastructure.

How was the initial setup?

We complicated the initial setup process a bit because we wanted to perform the design, implementation, and migration ourselves. This led to some difficulties in terms of initially understanding the solution. StarWind helped to fill in the gaps and our implementation and migration went completely to plan with little need for downtime. We were able to implement the solution on two servers while keeping our workloads running on the third server. We then migrated the workloads and built the remaining server.

What about the implementation team?

We wanted to perform the design, implementation, and migration of the solution ourselves. We asked for help where needed during the design stage and found the vendor was very knowledgeable and could quickly answer all of our questions. We performed the implementation ourselves and then conducted a solution validation session with the vendor. During this session, the vendor validated that everything was configured according to their best practices and also performed some advanced tuning. We also had an open-ended discussion about how to operate the system. This solution validation session was one of the best I have ever experienced.

The level of support from the vendor throughout the entire project has been excellent and they have been more than willing to develop a long-term relationship.

What was our ROI?

We were price-sensitive and wanted to minimize expenditure on additional hardware. The ability to utilize vMotion and High Availability features in our VMware infrastructure has already repaid the cost of the solution.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We found the StarWind vSAN solution was cost-effective compared to alternatives. You should talk to the vendor (or a good partner) about your needs because there are some differences in price based on your environment. We also recommend purchasing support.

In our case, we purchased StarWind vSAN for vSphere Essentials Edition which included 1 year of standard annual support and maintenance.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We initially looked at several external shared storage solutions and found them to be cost-prohibitive. We then evaluated vSAN solutions from HPE (this was discontinued) and the native solution from VMware. The native solution from VMware had fewer moving parts than the StarWind vSAN solution, but was more expensive and didn't provide the required level of flexibility that we needed regarding mixed HDD/SDD storage.

What other advice do I have?

We strongly recommend that you develop a good relationship with the vendor (or a good partner). In our experience, they played a key role in the success of the solution.

Reliable, easy to configure, and offers responsive support
Pros and Cons
  • "StarWind Virtual SAN is essentially hardware agnostic, allowing us to build out a specific hardware layer based upon the customer's unique requirements."
  • "The gathering of monthly consumption and performance reports for future dissemination to concerned parties is very important. Unfortunately, StarWinds vSAN doesn't offer this functionality."

What is our primary use case?

StarWind vSAN is used to provide highly available storage for a VMware environment within a large factory complex. The storage solution needed to be hardware independent and capable of being moved to no Dell hardware when or if required. The customer had already decided upon and purchased a specific Dell hardware solution, prior to deciding that they would like the features and benefits of high availability storage and or the benefit of a hyper-converged infrastructure.

The StarWindvSAN solution stretches over two Dell VRX Blade chassis and provides synchronous replication of data for us.

How has it helped my organization?

StarWind Virtual SAN is essentially hardware agnostic, allowing us to build out a specific hardware layer based upon the customer's unique requirements, specifically around Dell VRX blade was the most valuable feature of StarWind vSAN. It is a pleasant change to encounter a company who are willing to be flexible over an implementation utilizing their product and varying slightly from their normal design specifications. They also helped us qualify the product against the customer's constantly changing requirements.

What is most valuable?

The solution allows for highly available stretched vSAN technology, independent of hardware vendors was the primary selling point of this platform. We have had a scenario where one of the server rooms, in this case, the primary where all of the virtual machines run, fail. The virtual machines are key to the management of a production facility that employs hundreds of staff on a rostered basis. In the event that the underlying infrastructure is no longer able to serve data the hourly cost and loss to the company in exceptionally large.

The ability to continue to be back up and running within minutes definitely saved the company hundreds of pounds.

What needs improvement?

As a company grows the ability to be able to deep dive into the minutiae of system performance becomes very important. Being able to see at a glance which systems are consuming IOPS/shares is very important indeed.

The gathering of monthly consumption and performance reports for future dissemination to concerned parties is also very important. Unfortunately, StarWinds vSAN doesn't offer this functionality, however, it is something that would be greatly welcomed should they choose to develop it.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution for two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have had no issues regarding the stability or availability of StarWind vSAN. As such, my views are it is a good and reliable product.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It would be apparent that the solution will scale quite well. However, our actual capacity requirements for the implementation we performed are very small. As such we are unlikely to require future scalability.

How are customer service and support?

We had one incident for which we required the help of their support. Our questions and queries were answered within an hour of their being raised. Overall, we have been very pleased with the response.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

For this specific scenario, the customer hasn't considered the benefits of using this technology and it had not been a requirement.

How was the initial setup?

The initial configuration was very simple. We utilized StarWind's expertise and recommendations when implementing the solution.

What about the implementation team?

StarWind, the vendor, was involved directly with the implementation. This was accommodated remotely.

What was our ROI?

We have not measured ROI.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I'd advise users to go with StarWinds's design recommendations and utilize their technical support. It will help you get the best out of the product.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

No other options were considered. This as hardware had already been purchased.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Hardware-agnostic with an easy to use GUI and good compatability
Pros and Cons
  • "Being hardware agnostic is a must and definitely scored points for us."
  • "The GUI deserves a little love."

What is our primary use case?

In our company, we started searching for a cost-effective SDS solution to include in our portfolio since there aren't many reliable and affordable alternatives around.

For testing, we've set up a small VMware environment with a couple of VMs and connected to StarWind VSAN through Fibre Channel. This is a common environment for most of our customers, who tend to be SMBs, and their environments go from one to six hosts and one block/file storage, on average.

However, the most frequent pain point is managing and delivering storage for different applications while maintaining reliability and performance. That’s where StarWind comes into play.

How has it helped my organization?

We have come to the conclusion that it fits nicely in small/medium environments that, despite their size, still need a swift and reliable storage delivery while being affordable.

In smaller markets, like the one we operate in, there’s not much money hanging around to spend on software, especially when SMBs have budget constraints and must choose between keeping IT staff or improving the infrastructure. That said, spending $100k+ on VMware vSAN is madness.

StarWind VSAN offers an interesting alternative that is both enterprise-level and cost-effective without compromising companies' budgets. Having a free version is also a nice, welcoming sign of commitment.

What is most valuable?

Being hardware agnostic is a must and definitely scored points for us. Despite our portfolio being a little selective, it was nice to see that our hardware options were also supported and there would be no surprises in the future.

The simple (a little dated, yet easy-to-use) GUI was another good thing. We’re in 2024, and most SMBs can’t afford IT-specialized teams, so they rely on service providers like ourselves to keep things running.

VMware/Hyper-V compatibility has got us all covered since our customer base all runs on one of those two players. However, after three months of testing, we still haven't tested replication features. We'll do it soon.

What needs improvement?

The GUI deserves a little love. It is simple and works fine. However, the overall design is a little bit dated.

Updating the documentation would be welcome, too, since there are docs that point to Windows Server 2016 as the latest version, and the vSphere guide comprises 6.5, while we’re currently on 8.

Being ZFS-based, it would benefit so much to have deduplication and encryption. Immutability would also be a nice addition as it is a hot topic on data protection, and the solutions that offer it are either too convoluted or too expensive.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution for three months.

Reduces hardware, saves money, and easy to deploy
Pros and Cons
  • "As the client had acquired another company some distance away, they were concerned about having a single SAN in one location or the other. StarWind vSAN allowed us to keep a copy of the data local to each site without asking the client to pay for two SANs in addition to the two new servers they needed."
  • "I did not see any indication that StarWinds vSAN is a usable solution with non-GUI instances of Hyper-V."

What is our primary use case?

The MSP that I work for brought on a client who realized they needed help with IT after the acquisition of another company. In the space of a few weeks, that client nearly doubled in size, and the aged tech in use at each location previously wasn't going to cut it.

While we originally quoted a traditional SAN deployment for the client, they were concerned about having a single storage unit with two very distant servers. They weren't interested in buying two SANs so that each location could host one. StarWind vSAN allowed us to keep their data synced between two sites without the extra hardware expenditure.

How has it helped my organization?

For my MSP, this successful deployment has earned us another happy customer and another potential future sales lead. The client has expressed no concerns about the deployment since implementation in the handful of times we've reached out to them since the project wrapped up.

Additionally, we have been able to use this deployment solution for the training of lower-level staff to get them familiar with the underlying generic concepts of SANs, both virtual and physical (or at least as much as we can for physical SANs using a virtual SAN as the lab environment).

What is most valuable?

Easily the core of this solution was the utilization of stretched clustering. As the client had acquired another company some distance away, they were concerned about having a single SAN in one location or the other. StarWind vSAN allowed us to keep a copy of the data local to each site without asking the client to pay for two SANs in addition to the two new servers they needed.

On the acquired end of the company, the reduction in hardware also meant that we were able to use their existing server room mounting hardware, as a new server and a new SAN would require a larger rack to be deployed as well.

What needs improvement?

The documentation listed on the StarWind website indicated that the search result for vSAN was for Windows Server 2016. It wasn't until we got into the article itself that we saw that Server 2019 and 2022 were also supported by the same document.

While my co-workers might not place as much emphasis on this next topic as I do, I did not see any indication that StarWinds vSAN is a usable solution with non-GUI instances of Hyper-V. While it might certainly be possible, the time restraints on the project meant that my plan to roll out hypervisors with as little overhead as possible (e.g., Windows Server Desktop features) had to be placed at a lower priority, and we were never able to look into this as an option.

For how long have I used the solution?

The MSP I work for deployed StarWind vSAN to a client over the last month. They have been quite happy with it - and with us as a result.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The client has been happy so far, and we feel confident about this solution as an MSP.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Since the solution is built for small and medium businesses, its scalability is intentionally limited.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Our previous one-size-fits-all SAN mindset often priced us out of successful sales with smaller companies.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I'd advise future users to seriously consider the higher-level support packages. These can mean the difference between hours of downtime/angry bosses and a solution before you've even finished your coffee.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

While each of my co-workers on this project researched their own solutions to this project, I only brought the idea of StarWind's vSAN to the table.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
