We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Oracle Enterprise Manager helps to control servers.""The most valuable feature is the monitoring because it's very useful for checking and troubleshooting compared with other products, like Nagios for example, that have some interaction with Oracle.""This solution allows us to quickly drill down when there are issues.""Due to the infrastructure's size, the introduction they offer is very, very useful. It helps with an overall understanding of the product.""What I like most about Oracle Enterprise Manager are its features, particularly the active session history. It provides insights into SQL, and I use it regularly to identify potential issues.""The best part is the efficient database performance monitoring and the ability to take actions directly from there.""Some of the most valuable features are its real-time performance view/dashboard, metric history, real-time monitoring and alerts, as well as quick access to Oracle's tuning and diagnostic options.""The product gives us as much control as we can have by providing a complete picture of the whole set of Oracle products."

"The product is easy to use and the web interface is fantastic.""The most valuable feature is the ability to span multiple technologies and multiple vendors.""There is a simplicity to setting up the extra sensors. It's really easy for us to build infrastructure and start monitoring very quickly.""The real-time monitoring and alerting are its most valuable features.""The feature whereby it shows when my hard drives are moving towards thresholds that would be considered outages, before they reach that point - that is valuable.""The remote probes are very useful. They allow us to provide a reference across different areas in the network. In trying to localize issues, that's very useful.""It is able to satisfy all our requirements in terms of email notifications and specific errors on the devices.""The most valuable feature of PRTG Network Monitor is the different monitoring probes available."

Cons
"The tool is expensive.""There's a lot of documentation to go through as a new user.""The solution's agents work with Java, and the Java code sometimes consumes a lot of memory on the CPU.""The interface offered by Oracle Enterprise Manager has certain shortcomings and needs improvement to become a nice tool.""Reporting and statistical charting is largely still left up the end-user to develop custom solutions.""I would say mostly backup and recovery, through the Enterprise Manager. Or any corruptions, to be able to fix them through Enterprise Manager.""The interface could be more friendly for basic users.""We have encountered performance issues when the load is huge."

More Oracle Enterprise Manager Cons →

"PRTG's application monitoring sensor is not strong.""Their penetration within the market could be much better. If their pricing was lower, even though it's reasonable now, it might help them achieve this.""In a very few cases, customers want more detailed reports, which we cannot meet.""The operations dashboard is only available in PRTG's enterprise version, but I wish it could be accessed in the standard licensing. It would also be nice if PRTG had templates for dashboard monitoring, software monitoring, etc. It can help me set up a dashboard because now we don't have a template from PRTG, so we need to create one from scratch.""Maybe in the future there will be room for improvement, but currently, there is nothing pressing that I can think of""I would like to have a VM version that can be installed on a cloud such as Azure. We're using Azure, and we're eliminating on-premise servers. It would be helpful to have a PRTG version that can be installed on the Azure cloud.""PRTG Network Monitor can improve Layer 2 and Layer 3 network maps and the GUI more user-friendly. Additionally, they should bundle the features so I can monitor everything on one particular device.""Needs ability to monitor standard notification time (notify after X time)."

Pricing and Cost Advice

  • "The pricing is very high."
  • "We are satisfied with the pricing."
  • "There is only the standard licensing fee. There are no other costs."

I have researched a quite a few network monitoring tools which can be used for various monitoring purposes of not only the servers, but the intermediate routers as well. There are majorly three types of these softwares. Ones which are completely open-source, you can do almost anything you want using these, but they require quite some expertise before you can use them. Then there are the ones that are not open source, the enterprise softwares and cost you some money, but on the other hand, they are extremely easy to set-up and learn. You can have them up and running in a matter of minutes. And then there are those which are completely cloud based. They can be free of cost or charge some money depending on the software. The good thing about these is that you don’t have to install any extra software, and it can be managed completely online but then again these have limited features and you cannot exploit them to the full extent as you can do with the open-source and to some extent the enterprise software, so I won’t suggest you to use these, because these are generally not the complete solutions and require other support software to achieve the same. Below I have listed the outstanding pros and cons of the various Network analyzers that you can look into Nagios Pros: Nagios offers an extensive set of collector plug-ins that allows users to gather performance and availability data from a broad range of operating systems, including  Windows and Netware Nagios… Read more →

    Reviews from Real Users

Oracle Enterprise Manager stands out among its competitors for a number of reasons. Several major ones are its central management and monitoring and its reporting capabilities

Robin C., head of Oracle Exadata Centre of Excellence at Tata Consultancy Services, writes, "The database performance monitoring features are very useful and allow us to quickly zero in on DB-related issues. Exadata storage server and Infiniband switches can be viewed from the GUI in OEM which cannot be done in other tools. The ability to deploy metric extensions makes this tool extensible for our custom monitoring also."

PeerSpot users note the effectiveness of these features. A database manager at a tech services company notes, “The solution's most valuable aspect is the fact that it is embedded with the Oracle database and Oracle's engineering system, its extra data, and analytics.  They have plug-ins that are very helpful. Due to the infrastructure's size, the introduction they offer is very, very useful. It helps with an overall understanding of the product. They have a very nice graphical user interface. The monitoring is good. We can capture the SQL tune from us. With Oracle Enterprise Managers, we can see the rich performance tuning.”

PRTG Network Monitor runs on a Windows machine within your network, collecting various statistics from the machines, software, and devices which you designate. PRTG comes with an easy-to-use web interface with point-and-click configuration. You can easily share data from it with non-technical colleagues and customers, including via live graphs and custom reports. This will let you plan for network expansion, see what applications are using most of your connection, and make sure that no one is hogging the entire network just to torrent videos.

To monitor a large IT environment, it's important to be able to scale PRTG up. Paessler PRTG Enterprise Monitor includes all the proven capabilities of PRTG Network Monitor, which are enhanced by exclusive ITOps Board for a service-oriented, central overview of multiple PRTG servers.
