We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
"We are able to control our business with this all-in-one monitoring tool.""The most valuable features are auto-discovery and automatic detection of the network topology and network monitoring.""What I value most about Pandora FMS is the simplicity of working with it.""It is easy to create your own custom modules if you just know a little bit of scripting. If you have unique requirements, you can just make your own modules. You can even grab checks from other vendors. There are open-source checks for various things such as SMTP, etc. There is a long list of different ones from Nagios. You can just use them, and within seconds, you get yourself a check that is monitoring whatever you need. It is really flexible. I guess that's why they call it Pandora Flexible Monitoring System (FMS). It is reliable. It does the job, and it alerts. It is also surprisingly feature-rich. Our network guy just recently asked about a particular protocol to monitor the bandwidth on the network, which is not a common protocol. When I looked it up, and I found that they cover it. It is very mature for a not-so-known product."

"The more valuable feature of this solution is the Exchange feature.""I'd rate technical support at eight out of ten. They are helpful and fast.""Solarwinds has an open database that allows you to do serious integrations. It doesn't matter which service desk you have, you can implement and integrate it with SolarWinds.""This product can monitor application environments no matter where they reside and provides capabilities for deep insight into infrastructure.""The solution is great for monitoring. If something is going wrong, we can immediately find the root cause.""The most valuable feature is the Access Rights Manager.""The most valuable feature is application monitoring.""It's good at monitoring system-specific things like ports, services."

Cons
"Third-party integration should be improved for some commonly used products.""It would be helpful to include the generation of reports for times that the network was out of service.""The price for Pandora FMS is expensive.""Their support is good, but it is just online communication. It would be great to be able to just call someone and talk to them instead of always writing. It works well for me because I am a decent communicator in email, but some people might find it difficult to describe in a written fashion and communicate with them that way. There is a learning curve to the interface, but once you get used to it, it is actually very powerful. They have a lot of options, but people struggle with the interface. They've improved it though, and it is getting better. They need to keep improving the learning curve to help buy-in. I'm the guy that manages it, so I'm comfortable with it. They can refine the upgrade agents to be easier. They can also do more refinement in end-user usability because not everyone is strong technically, and people who aren't strong technically might be averse to the product, even though it has come a long way. It has a complete GUI and everything."

More Pandora FMS Cons »

"Some custom applications cannot be monitored, and a lot more applications need to be included.""It would be helpful if the solution could integrate more with the security compliances, like this IDSS, etc.""When you implement SolarWinds on a larger scale my customers complain about the speed.""This product has no real downside unless they fail to continue development of its capabilities.""The templates could use improvement. Currently, they are quite complex. They should have drag-and-drop functionality instead. It would make it easier to use.""Support for the IBM Mainframe is needed.""I would like to see support for non-Windows or non-Microsoft domains, especially Apache and other non-Windows servers.""It lacks a user experience for measuring things like the end-to-end time for which a user waits for a specific response in the system. In the application layer, it has some very basic stuff. You have to build your own with manuscripts and things like that."

Pricing and Cost Advice
"They are very competitive on the pricing side. That's one reason why my manager keeps using it."

More Pandora FMS Pricing and Cost Advice »

"The product might cost you $30,000 USD to buy, but scaling this solution requires the purchase of additional polling engines at $20,000 USD each.""The licenses start from USD 3000.00 and go up to USD 20,000.00 for the year. It's a perpetual license. Nothing is free in SolarWinds, anything that you need is an additional cost.""Pricing is inexpensive, starting at 2440 euros. For that, you get the ability to monitor a couple of nodes and one year of maintenance and support.""I like the pricing for this SolarWinds product.""Price can always be lower. It is neither on the expensive side nor on the cheap side. We have worked with them for a lot of years, so we get a discount due to the size of the installation.""Its licensing is on a yearly basis. It is just the standard price, but it can vary depending on the current rate of the dollar."
