HPE ProCurve Room for Improvement

Sandeep Rajguru - PeerSpot reviewer

Frankly speaking, the switches are very good and have been running without any shutdowns for more than a year. HPE's team has already monitored the switches.

Network performance-wise, it is a good product. The network performance can be made simpler. A few areas included in the network performance managers can be integrated into the solution's dashboard since it is the only area with a few concerns. The network performance manager should be integrated with the dashboard.

An area for improvement in HPE ProCurve is the web interface not being as robust because you still have to go to the COI to make modifications or look at the exact configuration.

The product must provide something similar to Cisco’s command-line interface. People in my line of work prefer the command-line interface. When I work on Cisco, it feels familiar.

I don't have any recommendations for areas of improvement. Overall, it's been very good.

The interface we have could be better. For example, Cisco is always looking to use the latest features that we can have for our front end.

Some things we need to do manually. For example, we need to support an Excel file and do some filtering. In Cisco devices or in other brands, you have these filters inside the front end. We'd like them to generally improve the front end of the solution.

Sometimes, if you have legacy solutions, it doesn't integrate well with this product.

Sometimes people complain about a lack of features and will instead want to try Cisco or Huawei.

I would like to improve certain aspects of HPE ProCurve. Specifically, I would like to focus on stacking. Additionally, in enhancing performance and addressing spam-related issues.

Perhaps, another area of improvement is optimizing the route advertising and routing between VLANs. It's also important to consider rating the calls and accessing additional features.

If we're aiming for an improvement, focus on enhancing security features in HPE ProCurve, particularly in terms of filtering. It would be beneficial to have some initial firewall features or mechanisms to safeguard resources. Additionally, maximizing high-speed capabilities and addressing aggregate needs would be important. That covers the key areas for improvement.

HPE ProCurve could improve by making their command more similar to other solutions, such as the access codes. There should be a standard. Additionally, if the configurations could be done from the cloud would be a benefit and the port uplink speed should improve.

My company switched from HPE ProCurve to Ubiquiti UniFi since we wanted one solution for our entire network. In general, HPE ProCurve should have more capabilities to offer. HPE ProCurve's web interface is old, and I have to log in on each device separately, making them the product's shortcomings that need improvement. With Ubiquiti UniFi, I have my login page where I can see every network on every company I manage.

There is one proprietary function they lack, and I can't remember what it was called, but it monitors the ports, and then every 10 seconds if the port is down, it can divert the traffic somewhere else. I'm not sure what they call it. Cisco uses this method. However, the HPE ProCurve does not provide that.

Essentially, you monitor reports and, if ports are down, you simply, divert the traffic somewhere else. If something goes wrong, they don't do it unless you manually go in and update. Because we have a double and triple backup link. And this is the only one where we need to add a Cisco switch to the network in order to keep track of the traffic. If our main MPLS fails, it switches to another tunnel. As a result, we are still in contact with our other offices.

They should learn from other vendors, such as Cisco. They all have a few specific routing features. HPE doesn't have any cheap BGP solution.

I would like to see more technical troubleshooting information, better logs, and better timestamps. Certain broker switches, when they reboot, default back to 1990. You can only tell how long they have been active and have to figure out dates, by pretending it is 1990 and moving forward from there.

I would like to see some kind of packet tracer where people can study how the switch is operating.

White box switching support is something that I would like to see in the future.

The solution should offer different gigabit interfaces. Right now, they have ten gigabits. However, for our needs, we only need one gigabit. We don't need 24 or 48 ports. We only need eight to ten. HPE should introduce into their portfolio some smaller and more compact options.

The solution should offer integration with other tools.

The solution should offer the same user interface for all of their equipment.

With Juniper, I like that they have an option to bundle a configuration change and commit it with the confirmed option. The switch will roll back if you don't confirm the change.

If you make a change and you disconnect yourself from the switch, you will create an issue. You just wait five or ten minutes for the switch to change back to the previous configuration. This is a nice feature that is offered with Juniper, which would improve the HPE ProCurve.

We'd like for it to provide logical separation at the switch, building security into the product. I've seen that their new technology does this, and that's what we're most interested in. Integration of NAC and other features of that nature to embed into the actual network would provide as a great return on investment. Again, it would give us that single-point visibility, single-configuration space that important for us.

I don't see any flaw in the product at this time. I'm a happy customer. The only things that might need improvement would be the administrative tools and the graphical interface. The GUI could be improved on the administrative interface, for example.

The speed could be higher, and more than 10 gigabits. We are in the process of buying large switches, and the higher the speed the better. It's that feature that involves a high cost, however. We find it challenging at the moment to find a low-cost solution.

The only thing that I can find wrong with the product is the web interface. Compared to Linksys, the web interface just lacks the usability that other brands offer. I don't like command line a lot that is why I go for web management. Cost-wise, they are quite expensive to say LInksys before. Even with Cisco acquiring LInksys, ProCurve still costs more than double. However, the lifetime warranty really works, and the added cost will go a long way in ensuring future support and product replacement.Despite its cons, I would still recommend HP ProCurve switches. Even if it costs more than products with the same specifications and performance, the added cost comes with lifetime warranty. If this is important to you, this is the right product. Since we transfer from one to ten gigabits of information, in a future release, it would benefit to have more high-speed ports. For example, the uplink should be 40 gigabits or 100 gigabits. That would be very welcome. The first few models of HPE ProCurve that do have such features are way too expensive for our customer.

The image of the solution has dropped in recent years due to HPE enterprise management. Moving the location of where the product line is produced was not good.

I don't have any problem at all with HPE ProCurve. I have a lot of experience with it, and I know that HP normally changes its equipment and technology. Maybe it would work better with HP if I only had one type of equipment since they have ProCurve, Aruba, and OfficeConnect. Every team is different. Our office is a different population. I know that ProCurve is really equal to Aruba, but there isn't any other equipment that HP has.

It would be good if the switch was bigger and faster, like with the ports.
