Helps route traffic to data centers without separate internet connections
Pros and Cons
  • "If there are multiple network connectivities in an organization, Meraki creates an AutoVPN. It creates a channel automatically."
  • "The granularity could be improved."

What is our primary use case?

Instead of having MPLS or direct, separate internet connections at each branch location, we can use SD-WAN to route the traffic to data centers. If someone is hosting applications or other web servers in a data center, we can route that traffic toward the data center where the application server is located, and they can access a wired local service provider.

It's deployed on the cloud and can be managed from the cloud. It only needs to be connected to the internet, and then it will start communicating with the Meraki Cloud. If it's connected to the cloud, it will sync the configuration on the cloud to that device.

What is most valuable?

Meraki AutoVPN is an interesting feature. If there are multiple network connectivities in an organization, Meraki creates an AutoVPN. It creates a channel automatically.

The UI is user-friendly.

What needs improvement?

The granularity could be improved. It's not very granular for URL filtering or content filtering. If you want to do a specific route or a specific rule, that feature is lagging a bit.

The stability could also be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used Meraki SD-WAN for two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I would rate the stability as eight out of ten. It's quite stable, but we've had issues in the past.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I would rate the scalability as eight out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

I would rate technical support as nine out of ten. Support is pretty knowledgeable and assists us in whatever manner they can. It can take about 30 to 45 minutes  to connect because of longer hold times.

How was the initial setup?

Setup is easy and straightforward. Deploying the SD-WAN hardware needs to be done statically. Once you have found the IP address, it connects to the internet. That's the only thing where physical assistance is required. The rest can be managed via cloud.

If you're doing the deployment remotely, only one remote person and one technician is needed. If you are onsite, then one person can do the deployment.

What about the implementation team?

We did the implementation in-house. The documentation on their portal explains everything. We just had to go through the documents if we needed any assistance. It was pretty helpful.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate this solution as eight out of ten.

For a larger enterprise level customer, I would recommend the MX450 or MX400 series.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Public Cloud

Good stability, with a straightforward setup, but endpoint security needs improvement
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution is a whole vertical solution, so it doesn't need any other components in order to provide basic features."
  • "The adoption of endpoint services or endpoint security should be developed in future releases."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use it to provide SD-WAN solutions for our customers.

What is most valuable?

The solution is a whole vertical solution, so it doesn't need any other components in order to provide basic features.

What needs improvement?

The security of the solution needs to be improved.

The adoption of endpoint services or endpoint security should be developed in future releases.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for five to ten years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is relatively stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is not scalable for high-end customers. Meraki is really flexible and can start from really small sites, so it's better suited to the SME market. When you reach a situation where you have a high number of sites with a high level of complexity, then Cisco Meraki probably lacks a bit of flexibility.

How are customer service and technical support?

I've never had to reach out to technical support.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward; it's not that complex. How long it takes to deploy depends on the customer's requirements and how complex their infrastructure is.

What about the implementation team?

We're a distributor. We deploy the solution on-premises for our clients.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We did evaluate other options, but we're very happy with Cisco Meraki.

What other advice do I have?

The advice I would give to others considering implementing the solution would be to start small and be patient.

I'd rate the solution seven out of ten.

A stable product with application awareness that is straightforward to set up and use
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature is application awareness."
  • "This solution can only support up to two WAN ports."

What is our primary use case?

We are a solution provider and this is one of the products that we implement for our customers. It allows our users to have their main LAN on the internet.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is application awareness.

What needs improvement?

This solution can only support up to two WAN ports. However, many of our customers would like to have four WAN ports.

This solution comes without NAT support enabled. If you need it, then NAT has to be enabled.

If this solution were cheaper then it would be of interest to smaller companies.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with the Meraki SD-WAN for one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have had no issues in terms of stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This is a scalable product, although it is most suitable for medium-sized organizations.

How are customer service and technical support?

We can speak with technical support directly but our customers have not had any issues.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I am familiar with products from several different vendors. The choice of product depends on several factors, including their budget.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward. Just plug and play.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We offer this solution to our customers as a more cost-effective alternative to some of the other products. Meraki is considered to be in a medium-range in terms of cost.

The licensing fees are approximately $1,000 USD annually.

What other advice do I have?

For medium-sized and larger enterprises, Meraki is a very good choice.

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

Easy to use, a straightforward setup, and prioritizes traffic well
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution's ability to prioritize traffic is its most valuable feature."
  • "The solution needs a multi-use provider portal."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution for our branch offices.

What is most valuable?

The solution's ability to prioritize traffic is its most valuable feature.

The solution is easy to use.

What needs improvement?

The solution needs a multi-use provider portal.

I'm not on the technical side, so I don't know if there is an area of the solution that needs improvement. There is a wish button in the product, and we're fine with that.

The pricing could be a bit lower.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for two years now.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We've never had an issue with scalability. We have about 200 users on the solution.

How are customer service and technical support?

We've only ever used the solution's technical support once and it was fine.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We didn't previously use a different solution.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward.

What other advice do I have?

We use the public cloud deployment model. We're a Cisco partner.

Due to its overall ease of use, I'd recommend the solution.

I'd rate the solution eight out of ten.

Suitable for any business, reliable, and priced well
Pros and Cons
  • "Meraki SD-WAN is stable and the performance is good."
  • "Meraki SD-WAN could improve on the lead time, but this is not a problem only with Cisco. there's a global shortage of chipsets. Additionally, the solution has limited features. It's quite a standard product and not very easily upgradeable or stackable."

What is our primary use case?

What we do is, we sell Meraki SD-WAN to our customers as a service and they use it for multiple purposes. For example, they use it for data, voice traffic, video, and services that are now in their data centers.

What needs improvement?

Meraki SD-WAN could improve on the lead time, but this is not a problem only with Cisco. there's a global shortage of chipsets. Additionally, the solution has limited features. It's quite a standard product and not very easily upgradeable or stackable.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have not been using Meraki SD-WAN very long.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Meraki SD-WAN is stable and the performance is good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability of Meraki SD-WAN is limited, it could improve.

I typically work with large business accounts which use Meraki SD-WAN. However, I have colleagues who have many accounts with smaller businesses that use Meraki SD-WAN. The solution is suitable for small to large businesses. We sell to small and medium businesses when they demand less complexity.

How are customer service and support?

We have used the support from Cisco for our clients and they are very good. We know them quite well.

How was the initial setup?

The implementation of the solution is rather standard. It is not difficult.

What about the implementation team?

We do the implementation and support of the solution.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

One of the most valuable aspects of Meraki SD-WAN is the price. It is highly cost-effective.

What other advice do I have?

Meraki SD-WAN is a perfect fit for those customers who want to implement SD-WAN with competitive pricing. There is not much demand when it comes to complexity and additional features. If customers want a standard SD-WAN solution, Meraki SD-WAN is a perfect fit for those customers.

I rate Meraki SD-WAN an eight out of ten.

Intelligent load balancing that is easy to setup and implement, with good support
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable features of this solution are load balancing and the security possibilities you have."
  • "Meraki is more or less intelligent load balancing, although a lot of features are missing that our SD-WAN solutions will have."

What is our primary use case?

It allows us to steer the traffic into two parallel links.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features of this solution are load balancing and the security possibilities you have.

What needs improvement?

Meraki is more or less an intelligent load balancing. A lot of features are missing that other SD-WAN solutions have. For example, forward error correction and WAN optimization. These features are missing.

The best thing would be if you could have more than two uplinks in the Meraki Gateways. Also, forward error correction would be nice to have.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Meraki SD-WAN for approximately a year and a half.

We are using the latest version.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We are a small company. We have approximately 120 users.

With Meraki, you have only two WAN links. You cannot have more than that.

You can scale it very easily if you want to have thousands of locations, but in every location or with every Meraki WAN gateway, you can only have two WAN uplinks.

How are customer service and technical support?

We have not contacted technical support, it's always perfect.

Cisco's technical support is very good.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is quite simple.

We are a training company that provides training on Meraki. It's a matter of minutes to implement an SD-WAN router.

We have a team that is responsible for maintaining this solution.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

If you purchase a Meraki gateway, you have to purchase a license. It's a basic license, and you will have SD-WAN included.

When you buy a Meraki gateway, you already have SD-WAN.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

When comparing Meraki SD-WAN with other SD-WAN solutions, Meraki is more or less for free. It's an easy to use solution that helps you to do things that you can't do without SD-WAN.

It is not as advanced as the Cisco SD-WAN solution, or SD-WAN solutions from other vendors.

It does not have a very rich feature set.

What other advice do I have?

For others who are interested in using Meraki SD-WAN, I would suggest that they know the limitations of the two uplinks and that it is not a separate solution. It's included in what you have. You will not have the same dashboard as you would have with the Cisco SD-WAN, or VeloCloud, VersaStack, etc.

For a free solution, I would rate this solution a ten out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Public Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?
