It strikes the fine balance between being a project management tool and a management tool.

What is most valuable?

This product gives the ability to have all project data in one location and look across information while still giving PMs the flexibility to manage their project and have a tool to use with their team (fine balance between project management tool and management tool).

  • Views can be controlled organization role.
  • Custom attributes can be added as trigger levels to include in a management report, view or dashboard
  • The use of SharePoint allows team collaboration and gives the PM the flexibility to add document libraries, lists, etc. to manage their project.

How has it helped my organization?

Dashboarding of information has given the organization insight, so we can move to be more proactive versus reactive.

What needs improvement?

Risk Management: Risk and issues are stored in the project SharePoint but there is no real auto communication of assignments (unless the end user sets it up); there is no mechanism for automatic escalation (much needed).

Issues are visible within the application (My issues area) so individuals can log in and see issues assigned to them.

Project Managers can set up email communications when issues change. (Admin can’t do it across the board but individual PMs can set up.)

We flag issues that need to be escalated and use SSRS reports that are emailed out at regular intervals.

For how long have I used the solution?

I implemented Project Server in November 2014 (and have used MS Project since 2000).

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Nintex workflow integration does give us some performance delays. Workflow response times can take up to 20 minutes to proceed to the stage (this is a work-in-progress for our IT team).

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I did not encounter any scalability issues.

How are customer service and support?

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used Business Engine Network for 12 years. Business Engine Network was bought by Planview and sunsetted. We were geared up to implement Planview’s product when the opportunity arose for us to look at MS Project Server. While Planview is a great portfolio management tool, its project management is weak.

How was the initial setup?

We used a third-party supplier, Pcubed, for initial setup.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Pricing varies according to many variables (on premise, MS hosted, third-party hosted, etc.)

What other advice do I have?

Having a PM business process in place prior to tool implementation to support that project not only makes it easier to configure the tool but makes it easier to grow the tool and become more mature in your business process.

Useful baseline function and good support
Pros and Cons
  • "The most useful feature of Microsoft Project Server is you can select a function to see the baseline."
  • "The price of the solution could be reduced."

What is most valuable?

The most useful feature of Microsoft Project Server is you can select a function to see the baseline.

What needs improvement?

The price of the solution could be reduced.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Microsoft Project Server for approximately 15 years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have approximately 100 to 500 users using Microsoft Project Server.

How are customer service and support?

The support we have received is good.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Microsoft Project Server is more expensive than other solutions on the market. We purchase the license annually.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Microsoft Project Server a ten out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Project management solution that offers valuable gantt charts but could be simplified in its task management
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable features are the gantt charts. It's easy to use for me."
  • "Project Server could be improved by simplifying how tasks are assigned and reviewed on a daily basis."

What is our primary use case?

We use this solution for project management for the whole company different teams in different locations.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features are the gantt charts. It's easy to use for me.

What needs improvement?

Project Server could be improved by simplifying how tasks are assigned and reviewed on a daily basis. This solutions integrations could be made more user friendly.

The reporting and visualizations could also be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I don't think it's very scalable. It's not that easy to navigate or scale up and down according to your needs. It has some limitations.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was difficult, especially when it comes to resource assignments. We had issues because we have a lot of other software.

If one is complex and five is straightforward, but I would rate the initial setup a two out of five.

What about the implementation team?

It was done by in-house.

What other advice do I have?

Microsoft Project Server is more suitable to small, medium size businesses instead of enterprises. I would advise others to work with a project management consultant as it is not that easy to integrate within a company.

I would rate this solution a five out of ten.

Good project scheduling and collaboration but needs better reports
Pros and Cons
  • "It's stable and reliable."
  • "We are on the on-prem version. The cloud, however, gives more regular updates that we can take advantage of."

What is our primary use case?

We are basically using it for project monitoring, scheduling, and resource utilization. We have some custom reports, in which we have used SQL server reporting services.

How has it helped my organization?

Before, we were doing project management and project management activities. However, it was siloed. This provides an enterprise version and a centralized environment. Everybody, every project manager, is contributing. We are getting clear visibility of the projects we are running.

What is most valuable?

We like the project scheduling and collaboration, as well as the rule optimization.

It's stable and reliable.

What needs improvement?

We are on the on-prem version. The cloud, however, gives more regular updates that we can take advantage of. On-premises needs more regular updates.

The Project Server reporting is not very powerful unless you have another tool or other thing integrated with it.

Collaboration potential can be increased.

It's very expensive to scale out.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been using the solution for four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable. It's reliable. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution isn't highly scalable. We do not have plans to scale due to the high cost.

We have 30 to 40 people using the product. It's a mix of project managers and some management or reporting. We also have some general team members.

How are customer service and support?

Support is available. It's a very popular kind of solution so you can get help easily.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I may have used a different solution, however, I cannot recall which solution. We're a new department. We didn't switch from something per se.

How was the initial setup?

It's not straightforward to set up - unless the person knows it. Then they can set it up with ease.

The deployment took about one week.

You only need about two to three people to maintain the solution, however, they do not have to be fully committed. It's only a few hours a week.

What about the implementation team?

Our team handled the deployment with some IT involvement.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

A different department handled the licensing. I can't speak to exact costs.

There is expense in the case of maintenance. If you need some person to maintain it, since it's an on-prem solution, that's a cost. You can't measure it, however, it's a cost. It's also expensive to scale.

What other advice do I have?

I'm a customer.

If you don't want to go to the cloud, this is a good solution.

I'd rate the solution seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

The division between the onsite work On the cloud of is something valuable. The tech support needs improvement.
Pros and Cons
  • "It is easily adaptable. In addition, it is easily used on mobile applications."
  • "In terms of tech support, it took a long time for them to resolve a ticket."
  • "When a lot of users logged onto the site, it took a big toll on the service. Therefore, there is a scalability issue."
  • "Work needs to be done on collaboration with SharePoint."

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case would be to reset out projects online during the process and be able to use the Project Pro to run or exhibit projects which are already planned as part of the process of project management.

How has it helped my organization?

It improves the managing function with this product.

What is most valuable?

I think the division between the onsite work on the cloud of Microsoft Office is something valuable. It is used for consulting assignments. I think that people are more used to the Microsoft inner-workings. They use Excel, and the other Office products, so it is easily adaptable. In addition, it is easily used on mobile applications.

For how long have I used the solution?

One to three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I think stability is good but I think there's quite some amount of activity towards integration with SharePoint.  So, the institution in terms of collaborating and sharing projects, I think that's something that needs to be worked on in the future.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

In terms of the performance, I think it's something that took a big toll on the service when a lot of people logged in finally, so that's something that can be improved in the future.

How is customer service and technical support?

They were good, but they took quite some time to resolve a ticket. We figured it out with our own tech support. The issue was a performance issue, so we could see our position taking a longer time to load because it would generally take three seconds. At the max, it was taking more than ten seconds for the application to load. Eventually, we got it resolved through a Microsoft tech service technician on-site.

How was the initial setup?

It was already implemented, but it had to be customized. We did some customization, along with some approvals along with the Share Point. So, it was a little more complex implementation. In terms of creating forms for users to log in with their information, as well as integrating Share Point with Project, we had to research how to create a flow between these two platforms. Initially, there were problems with the integration of the two.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The licensing was procured before my involvement.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I know that there are other solutions in this realm. Gmail is one that others are using right now. They are the main competitor.

People are still have the view that not many of these run through Microsoft project. A lot of these will be running through Agile, so that's the basic difference I've seen in terms of the competitions in my projects.

What other advice do I have?

I think this solution is a more scalable, so people now will start believing that Microsoft can also be used. The comfort of using Microsoft products, which is likely for most of the clients, is that they use Microsoft Office as their primary word processing or data processing tool. I think people have their trust in the Microsoft product line, so I think it's good to give them something because I think it's easier for them to adopt and implement.

MS tech support for the MS Project suite of apps is definitely more focused on the Online versions. There is still as significant user base for On Prem and local client applications. I hope that MS will seriously consider providing better support for these users.

Tracks time taken and budget status, but needs to be more user-friendly
Pros and Cons
  • "We are able to know what we are doing, how much we have spent, how much time we've taken, and it tells us how much money is left for the project. It also tells us whether we are below or above our expenditures, whether we are below or above our budget."
  • "It has to be more user-friendly. For instance, there should be some assistance, like when you go to certain sites, people pop up and say, "Can we help you? What are you looking for?" It's not interactive enough."

What is our primary use case?

We use it for managing our internal projects, for tracking the status and progress of our projects in terms of schedules - that they are delivered on time - and that the expenditure is controlled.

How has it helped my organization?

We are able to know what we are doing, how much we have spent, how much time we've taken, and it tells us how much money is left for the project. It also tells us whether we are below or above our expenditures, whether we are below or above our budget.

What is most valuable?

The graphical scheduling feature is very important for us.

What needs improvement?

It has to be more user-friendly. For instance, there should be some assistance, like when you go to certain sites, people pop up and say, "Can we help you? What are you looking for?" It's not interactive enough.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is fine for our purposes.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Because our projects are medium size, it's capable of dealing with the details that we require. It's able to capture the critical details that we require at every stage.

How was the initial setup?

Setting up is not that difficult.

What other advice do I have?

It's a good solution but it does have limitations, as I said: The real-time interactions with the user are absent. That is the only issue that I would mention. Otherwise, I would recommend it.

The most important criteria when selecting a vendor are that the product has to meet the budget. It has to be something we are able to afford and also it should address our specific needs.

I would rate it at seven out of 10 because it meets most of our requirements. And judging from the stakeholder's response, they are pretty happy with what we have been giving them as presentations.

MS Project and it's associated apps(Server, Client, etc.) have never been very user friendly. But, then again, Project Management for anything other than relatively simple projects with only a few resources can get messy as well. A rich suite of options helps to support more advanced PM needs. I definitely would like to see more context sensitive help and or suggestions available.

A single place for all our organisation's project records
Pros and Cons
  • "A single place for all our organisation's project records."
  • "Deliverables List: Most useful to enable meaningful status reporting at an enterprise level."
  • "EPM 2010 UI seems a bit dated now that 2016 is available."

What is our primary use case?

It just works. Although, EPM 2010 UI seems a bit dated now that 2016 is available.

How has it helped my organization?

A single place for all our organisation's project records.

What is most valuable?

Deliverables List: Most useful to enable meaningful status reporting at an enterprise level. It enables a minimum viable reporting level for "accidental" project leads who are unfamiliar with scheduling techniques.

What needs improvement?

The new versions appear to address the current UX and an ability to better represent the application of agile management methodologies.

For how long have I used the solution?

More than five years.

Easy to use, stable, and has good scheduling but the deployment could be simplified
Pros and Cons
  • "The scheduling and the customization are very powerful."
  • "It should be more agile and more flexible when it comes to customization."

What is our primary use case?

We use this solution for reports for our project and program management.

What is most valuable?

It is easy to use.

The scheduling and the customization are very powerful.

What needs improvement?

Reporting is an area that needs to be worked on. It needs improvement.

It should be more agile and more flexible when it comes to customization.

The deployment could be easier.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have five to seven years of experience in Microsoft Project Server.

We are using the on-premises version but have also explored the Cloud version.

We are using version 2019.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Microsoft Project Server is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is scalable but is very expensive.

We have approximately 50 users in our company who are using this solution.

How are customer service and technical support?

We have not contacted Microsoft technical support.

How was the initial setup?

It is not an easy deployment.

Once it is done it's good, but Microsoft Project Server is not easy to deploy.

It took approximately two weeks.

We have a team of three people to maintain this solution. They are made up of administrators and project managers.

What about the implementation team?

We hired a professional consultant who was experienced to help us with the installation.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

There is a licensing cost.

What other advice do I have?

I would definitely recommend this solution to others who are interested in using it.

I would rate Microsoft Project Server a seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises
