Oracle Data Guard Initial Setup

Setting up Oracle Data Guard is a bit challenging. It is not very easy, and you will likely need an expert to guide you through it. But if you follow the steps and get the right help, you can get it done. How fast you can set up Oracle Data Guard depends on things like how big your database is and the quality of your internet connection. Smaller databases and good internet make it quicker to set up, while larger databases or slower connections may take more time. Setting up Oracle Data Guard varies a lot. It could take anywhere from a minute to a day. It depends on factors like your database size, bandwidth, and other technical considerations.

The initial setup is easy and straightforward. The time taken for deployment depends on the size of the database and the network bandwidth. We can deploy the solution on-premises and on the cloud.

The initial setup is straightforward, provided you know the source, target, data version and format. You need to consider all those things.

First and foremost, when deploying Oracle Data Guard, the number one priority is to ensure all parameters are correctly set. Two primary methods exist: using backups or recovering from services if the network is reliable. If the network is robust, backups from the source to the target may not be necessary. You must ensure that NIS names are correctly configured on both sides and that the failover and switchover processes are tested successfully from both production and standby environments. Once these steps are completed, the deployment process becomes straightforward.

There's no need to copy the entire parameter file; only specific configurations, such as the SID or file structure, must be adjusted if necessary. Ensuring proper DNS name resolution, SID configurations, parameter settings, and understanding whether to convert the Data Guard are essential. Once these aspects are identified, the deployment process becomes more straightforward. I have implemented numerous Data Guard setups.

Setting up Oracle Data Guard is performed within the Oracle CRS. Challenges may arise in establishing connectivity between the standby and production databases, necessitating troubleshooting. Apart from that, once configured within CRS, the setup is complete.

The challenge with Oracle Data Guard is that it often takes some time for us to identify whether the issues stem from the disk or the network. If we report issues to the network or storage teams from the database end, we may not perceive any apparent problems, which can lead to confusion. We can convince the storage teams to investigate further until we delve into the disk I/O Guard and determine if specific disks operate at total capacity. When disks are operating at total capacity, it can significantly impact application processes. These difficulties in pinpointing the source of issues contribute to the challenges of maintaining and managing Oracle Data Guard.

Setting up an Oracle database isn't straightforward, though it's comparatively simpler than other systems. Personally, initiating and configuring an Oracle Data Guard wasn't a significant challenge. However, the complexity arises when considering the sizing of the primary database. Managing a few gigabytes for Data Guard is manageable, but scaling up to terabytes poses a substantial effort.

Initial setup is of medium difficulty if you know how to use Oracle Data Guard. Implementation took three days.

It was complex. My DBA had a difficult time. If five represents the most complex, I would rate it a five out of five in terms of complexity.

It required multiple experts. It required Microsoft support, our own system experts, and an external DBA to make the transition work. It took us two weeks to move from one Data Guard replication to another Data Guard replication.

The initial setup is straightforward. Just follow the documentation. For our present situation, it was dependent on the project and the database files.

Sometimes the setup took one day, sometimes only one hour. It was depending on the size of the database. It could be very fast for me.

The initial setup is complex. I give the setup a two out of ten.

We tested internally and then configured the Oracle Data Guard according to the procedures we found from the published Oracle site. We then deployed the solution. The deployment takes around four months and requires three people.

The set is straightforward but it is dependent on the audience you have. Internally, we have experienced DBAs, so deploying Oracle is straightforward. If we had to do the same job for an external company it could be complex.

The initial setup is not overly difficult. It's not complex. It's very easy, very straightforward.

I cannot recall the exact amount of time the actual deployment took.

We have some engineers that can handle the setup process. We have eight or nine that can handle deployment or maintenance tasks.

The initial setup was not complex. At first, many years back it was complex, but it's getting easier to set up in the last couple of years. It's been easier in the last few years and has been easier than past versions.

We had somebody help us with the deployment.

Oracle has a team that can help you with the setup. We have tested the solution for more than 2 months because moving our labeled, especially our big databases, because it's always an issue. With Data Guard, the main thing was for the application to switch the default recovery site in case of a disaster, and finding out how to score this site afterwards.

The implementation is complex for anyone who's jumping into it without any experience. It's all command-line driven implementations. For some, that's a turn-off.

Most of the time taken during deployment was for the restoration of the backup. We chose the backup methods because our DR was across the VPN and the speed for which to make the online backup was too small. Instead, we took the backup from the source and just copied over to the target and then stored it there. That particular process took time. Other than that, the deployment docs for Data Guard made everything pretty quick. It took maybe an hour, or an hour and a half.

The initial setup was quite complex, but it was because of a different implementation approach. It's not so complex as such.

When it was the manual version 9, we migrated it to version 11, and now we migrated again to version 19, which is a different approach for implementing it. In the beginning, it was new and quite complex, but not so much to be done later.

The initial setup is straightforward. It's not complex.

The time it takes to deploy depends on how long it takes to replicate the primary database and to configure the standby database, but on average it can take a couple of hours.

You only need one or two people to maintain the system.

As far as the installation, you should have an understanding of Data Guard. I am experienced with it and didn't require the script for the whole configuration and connection. If you don't have experience with Data Guard, then you must read the installation and configuration instructions.

The initial setup is very complex. Users need to be familiar with the operating system, as well as how their network and Oracle Concepts as a network, work.

In our last implementation, deployment took between five and eight hours. There were some problems in correcting each solution on the network and then we wanted to test for its stability and we wanted to simulate the environment quality before pushing it online.

Ultimately, we found some problems and discovered how to resolve them after a few hours. We just needed to figure out how to connect the database directly on S08 LAN. We had many issues. In one case the link of S-storage was disconnected for example.

Some countries try to persuade that you should use all of the networks, but in some cases, you have to find your own best way forward. In this case, we found we had to connect the storage models directly through the user feature on the Oracle Database.

Implementation is not easy. Going forward, I'm going to make a script for implementation for this database, and I think it's going to be easier for implementation in the future.

For most projects, we have two people that handle the implementation of the solution. One as a solutions engineer and the other was DBA administrator. Sometimes you also may need to use a network administrator as well. At minimum, you need two experts and maybe three in some cases. You want accurate maximum availability in-network, especially on the network.
