A stable solution that filters out spam and other unwanted content from the mailbox of its users
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution's initial setup process was easy since it was deployed on the cloud."
  • "In our company, we found out that the solution wasn't well-tested by Trend Micro, resulting in a performance and bandwidth problem."

What is our primary use case?

Customers have specific needs regarding the use cases of Trend Micro Email Security. They require a solution to manage email onboarding and offboarding, allowing them to filter out spam and other unwanted content from their Outlook mailbox. They need a solution that can integrate with on-premises solutions to manage security and policies to block bad IPs, domains, and files. The solution should also be able to analyze files and scan them from outside sources. These features are essential to meet the needs of the clients.

What needs improvement?

In our company, we require IT engineers who can execute integration procedures. For this, they need a clear guide. I had an issue when I worked on another project involving FortiWeb and web gateway, where web gateway also works with Trend Micro Email Security. In our company, we found out that the solution wasn't well-tested by Trend Micro, resulting in a performance and bandwidth problem. Sometimes, we discovered that support from the solution's end was occupied with cloud-related activities on a specific day. However, some customers require a gateway in their country due to cybersecurity regulations that force companies to comply with specific regulations. Therefore, for the cloud solution, they need to choose a location near their country or in their country if possible. If a data center is located in another country that has political conflicts, it can create issues for engineers and top management. In my experience, they didn't test the solution for performance and lacked simple guides to assist engineers without the need for a support ticket, especially for longer projects.

For how long have I used the solution?

My company is an IT enterprise. So, we work with the final customer. We provide our customers with services like integration and providing solutions, like antivirus, EDR, privacy management, and so on.

I have been using Trend Micro Email Security for three years. Also, I am using the solution's latest version.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of the solution is good, but the web proxy and web gateway solutions are not stable. We had to perform some patching and configuration setup after a long time due to issues we encountered during the six-month integration process. It was problematic because Trend Micro did not test the solution thoroughly before making it available to the public. Stability-wise, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Certain skills are required, such as understanding email workflow from the exchange server to the client's laptop and to the firewall and image gateway. Troubleshooting skills are also necessary in case of deployment issues. Additionally, since the image gateway is cloud-based, knowledge of cloud computing may be beneficial.

Most of our clients using the solution are medium-sized businesses.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support for Trend Micro Email Security is okay. However, for other solutions, I believe they need to improve their support because even when I open a ticket, the response is slow, and sometimes we have to work with the development team and wait for troubleshooting, which takes a lot of time. It depends on the support engineer who handles the tickets. I rate the technical support a six out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Previously, I worked with Fortinet FortiWeb and FortiGate. The managers in charge of selecting partners decided to work with the partner we have for FortiGate, which we use for firewalls. However, for other needs, we work with different partners, like Sophos or others.

How was the initial setup?

The solution's initial setup process was easy since it was deployed on the cloud. However, the guide for the initial setup didn't provide us with a proper explanation. The issue we face with Trend Micro is that they do not provide us with the necessary information on how to integrate their solution into our system. Their guide only provides a general overview, and we must contact them whenever we encounter a problem. It is up to us to search and find the best architecture for implementing and deploying the solution, determine where it should be deployed, and what level of access we need to grant it in the firewall. This kind of specific information is crucial for system and security engineers in order to meet the requirements for successful implementation.

The deployment process can be carried out in two weeks. Four people are needed for the deployment process, including an engineer to manage the solution, an engineer to manage the exchange with the editor, and an engineer to integrate the solution.

For maintenance and support, we have a contract with Trend Micro that provides us with support, and we pass on this support to our customers. As we are not the end customer but a partner providing IT services to enterprises, it is important that we have the support of Trend Micro to ensure that we can meet the needs of our customers effectively.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Price-wise, it is a cheap solution. I rate the solution's pricing a one on a scale of one to ten, where ten is expensive. Annual payments are made for the licensing.

What other advice do I have?

Before selecting a solution, it's important to work on the email policy. This is because a problematic policy can result in email blocking, which can negatively impact email communication. If there are some trusted partners or domains, they should be added to the whitelist so that the policy does not affect their emails. However, it's crucial to ensure that important emails are not blocked, especially those crucial for top management or business purposes. Therefore, policy management is essential, and companies should make sure that their policies are well-optimized to avoid blocking important emails.

I rate the overall solution a nine out of ten.

Robust with a good antivirus engine and good reliability
Pros and Cons
  • "The initial setup is not overly complex."
  • "While they are good, not 100% of email is protected just yet."

What is our primary use case?

We have implemented the solution for a few clients.

What is most valuable?

The Email Security solution from Trend Micro is quite a strong solution. The antivirus engine is quite strong, which is one thing the partners and clients prefer.

The biggest selling point is the GUI. The administration is very easy. For anyone who knows a little bit about IT, or is a little bit technical, can run the solution easily and administer it as well.

The initial setup is not overly complex.

It is a product that offers good stability.

We can scale the solution if we need to.

What needs improvement?

Sometimes, especially when you are hit by ransomware, there are issues. The hardest thing to deal with is spam email, which you can actually protect your network from. They could improve the database or the engine to make it more robust to stop those kinds of emails. Even if an end user tries to open those emails, normally, they will send you the zip file or a website address or something like that, and the end user will get in trouble if they try to open anything. Therefore, if Trend Micro can improve its engine to stop those kinds of new ransomware, that would be a big plus for them. While they are good, not 100% of email is protected just yet.

It's quite pricey.

In Email Security, they basically pretty much cover everything. They can't add anything else. If they try to add something in, it might also slow down the computers and the process. I don't think they will add anything in the near future.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution for a while. It's been four to five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is very stable and reliable. It's not overly complex or difficult.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution can scale. They have a few products you can add on with Email Security, which can help you secure your network using other security products. Therefore, it is very much scalable.

How are customer service and support?

We've dealt with technical support. They are great. They're on-time and very quick.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I am also familiar with Kaspersky.

I would rate Trend Micro better than Kaspersky.

How was the initial setup?

The solution is very straightforward and simple. It's not overly complex. It takes about an hour or two to have everything set up.

You only need two people to manage the solution if you have around 1,000 users.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The cost can be pretty high. Due to their cost, it's okay for the enterprise and the corporate level companies. They are the ones who go for Trend Micro Email Security. A small company does not go for it due to the cost.

I'd rate the solution two out of five in terms of affordability.

What other advice do I have?

I'm a Trend Micro reseller.

The solution could be deployed either on the cloud or on-premises. It depends on the client what he actually requires. Both of them have similar kinds of features. No one is better than the other, however, personally, I prefer on-premises.

I'd rate the solution eight out of ten.

Provides email security like spam filtering, protection from spam fishing, and protection from fraudulent content
Pros and Cons
  • "Trend Micro Email Security has a feature for secure protection of OneDrive, Google Drive, and CloudApp security."
  • "There is a limitation when customers are using their email from a third-party solution that isn't from Trend Micro."

What is our primary use case?

This solution is used for email security like spam filtering, spam protection from spam fishing, and protection from fraudulent content.

The solution can be on-prem or on cloud. We implement it as a cloud solution.

What needs improvement?

There is a limitation when customers are using their email from a third-party solution that isn't from Trend Micro.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's cloud-built, so it's scalable.

How are customer service and support?

There is a local team, and they're responsive. I would rate them 4 out of 5.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Trend Micro Email Security has a feature for secure protection of OneDrive, Google Drive, and CloudApp security. With Barracuda, these features are not available for protection of OneDrive or Google Drive.

How was the initial setup?

It's not easy, but it's not very difficult.

I would rate the setup for implementation 4 out of 5.

Everything is hosted on the Trend Micro Cloud. They provide an agent, and the agent installs the solution on the user's PC. There is no hardware required for implementation.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The cost is about $6,000 for 300 users for one year. Compared to Barracuda, it's not expensive.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate this solution 7 out of 10.

Easily configurable solution suitable for small to medium businesses
Pros and Cons
  • "The best features are that it is very convenient to configure new rules onto it and it gives very good insight on what has entered my system and what the email security solution has taken action upon."
  • "There is a lot of room for improvement towards the phishing kind of email filtering, with the different hijacking attacks, and with the kind of password attacks which these phisher attackers do."

What is most valuable?

From an email security standpoint, the best features are that it is very convenient to configure new rules onto it and it gives very good insight on what has entered my system and what the email security solution has taken action upon. It has future analytical insight on what kind of attacks it could come across which would have already penetrated your system that you should be aware of. If there is anything which has already propagated inside the system, we can look into the other email security solutions to get that validated and then it gets things under control.

What needs improvement?

There is a lot of room for improvement towards the phishing kind of email filtering, with the different hijacking attacks, and with the kind of password attacks which these phisher attackers do. The engine is intelligent enough to block any link which is coming in the email because it checks the quality of the reputation of the link. But it is written by a very intelligent person using a very localized domain so it lacks that functionality. There are other solutions available in the market, such as Proofpoint and Barracuda, that have slightly better intelligence around that, maybe they have more attack feeds coming in or maybe they are working a little harder on the resource side. Their response towards such emails is very granular whereas Trend Micro's is higher.

Maybe email security is not the goal for Trend Micro, because the other players like Proofpoint, Barracuda and Microsoft are working essentially on the email security. So they are very focused and since the products are completely driven towards email security they give a better posture and have better performance there. But from a threat prevention point of view and as the first wall of anti-virus defense, Trend Micro tends to be a superior product.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Trend Micro Email Security for two and a half to three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Stability-wise, we have not found any challenges so far.

I don't know if I can fully comment on that, because we have a limited base, a limited number of users, and maybe our organization is not the organization which should ideally comment on the stability. But the solution has been available all the time, there was no downtime in our service period and we are not facing any challenges regarding availability.

How are customer service and technical support?

In India they provide very good support.

We have not faced any kind of challenges here. I'm not sure about other regions and their services there. For us, it has been a very good experience, because the vendor we work with has very good expertise in Trend Micro. The OEM itself is there and they are available most of the time, even 100% of the time. So it's good.

Whenever we had some issues with our email services, they were all available.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was very straightforward. I think it took us 15 days.

It was very, very quick because we were on the cloud setup. It was just a few steps so that our emails go there, get filtered and then come back to us. Then a few fine tunings so that we don't block legitimate emails.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I think the email security domain is a very mature domain now. If you look at Gartner, for example, they have stopped publishing their quadrants for email security because they have declared that it's a very mature market and players which are in email security already know that they are very deep into the services.

What other advice do I have?

On a scale of one to ten, I would give Trend Micro Email Security a seven.

Some of their features should focus more on preventing the emails which are malicious in nature from entering into the user mailbox and they should have a feature to completely remove it from the entire email system. For example Microsoft has an option where if there is a malicious email you can just identify it and with one click you can delete every email in the system in the organization for whoever has received it. Similarly, there must be some kind of awareness mechanism for the user, even for whoever is not receiving it. They should be able to send out some kind of email or some kind of awareness to the user not to respond to any malicious services. In my experience throughout my career, making your users aware of email threats helps to get control of the threat by almost 70%.

If you receive 10 emails out of which four to five would be spams, one or two may be malicious. If you are aware of it you will not respond to it. But in the initial stages, you might have clicked on the link or responded to their request. But eventually, when you learn about these malicious things, you automatically hesitate responding to them, or maybe you just don't read them. Those kinds of responsive behavior comes with time. If you teach your people they will not respond and your email security solution will look better because people will not get into the wrong traps.

For small to medium sized business, Trend Micro Email Security fits very well because cost-wise it is effective and because their technical resources are widely available in India, the Asia Pacific region, and in Europe. However, when we look at it from an enterprise user perspective, where the number of users can be huge, we take more of a risk opting for a less expert solution. In terms of email security, I would not rate Trend Micro as an expert solution. There are others available which are doing this better than Trend Micro. Once Trend Micro is at their scale, at that point only would I recommend Trend Micro. But for the small and medium industries, I would recommend it because they have limited budgets and they work in a different sector of the market.

But for the enterprise customers, I think they should look at some better solutions which are dedicated for email security. Email is the most critical part of the organization, so you should always choose the expert.
