Pros and Cons
  • "In my experience as an MSP, Auvik stood out for its ease of deployment."
  • "To improve customer onboarding, Auvik could consider offering a free tier of the product."

What is our primary use case?

Our company operates in the IT field and offers managed services to our IT clientele. We provide a range of IT solutions to these customers. One such service is managed networking. To ensure the smooth delivery of this managed network service, we utilize Auvik for network monitoring purposes.

After exploring the market, we evaluated several products that offered device monitoring features. Our key objectives were to track device status up or down, receive alerts for offline devices like switches or access points, and gain network visibility through a visual dashboard or network map that would provide real-time health information. Ultimately, we decided to implement Auvik to meet these needs.

How has it helped my organization?

In our evaluation of competitors, Auvik emerged as the superior product across several key metrics. It stood out for its usability, ease of onboarding, and customer onboarding. This meant minimal training and upskilling for our staff, as the product is intuitive and user-friendly. Overall, Auvik impressed us with its user-centric design and streamlined implementation process.

The network map and dashboard offer a real-time view of our networks, which aligns with our expectations. Since most of our customers are located geographically close together, a single top-level dashboard provides a clear picture of their network health. This centralized view allows us to quickly identify any potential issues and zoom in on specific areas for further investigation. The alerting system is also very responsive, notifying us promptly of any problems.

Gaining real-time visibility into our network is a breeze thanks to Auvik's intuitive dashboard and user-friendly network map. This feature has been a major hit with our clients, who appreciate the ease of use. The ability to filter and search directly from the dashboard makes it simple to identify specific information, saving us valuable time and effort.

Auvik has made significant improvements in device protection, along with enhancements to how the network diagnostics and network map are built. Their recent launch of additional loop tools is quite impressive.

We have empowered our entry-level technicians to resolve more tickets independently. Previously, we had to escalate network-related tickets to two network specialists. Now, Auvik allows us to assign these issues to generalist engineers, at least for initial triage. This way, generalist engineers can gain valuable information to troubleshoot the problems much earlier in the incident lifecycle.

It has significantly improved our mean time to resolution. Auvik can generate those corrective alerts promptly, which is a significant improvement on the previous product we were using.

Auvik has been a valuable tool for understanding the health and composition of our customers' networks. It provides us with proactive insights into firmware and software versions across a wide range of devices. This information is crucial for planning and implementing security patches and improvements. Additionally, Auvik helps us track hardware lifecycles, allowing for better planning of replacements. The richness of the data provided by Auvik makes it an essential asset for network management.

The value of Auvik became immediately apparent. We were tasked with onboarding a significant number of customers – roughly 150. While the onboarding process itself was quick, taking only about an hour per customer, the true benefit came after deployment. Auvik's proactive reporting allowed us to identify issues that our previous products had missed.

The true value lies in its ability to provide immediate network visibility. By minimizing setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting time, Auvik empowers users to spend less time on the software itself and more time on understanding what's happening within their network devices. This easy access to information is what makes Auvik a valuable proposition.

What is most valuable?

In my experience as an MSP, Auvik stood out for its ease of deployment. We were able to quickly roll it out to over 150 customers without any hassle. Additionally, it was straightforward to configure the alerts to meet our specific needs. Finally, the Auvik team provided excellent support when we were integrating the software with our ticketing system.

Proactive monitoring, particularly proactive alerting for misconfigurations, is a powerful tool. For instance, if a switch has incorrect VLAN configurations, the system can automatically detect the mismatch and raise an alert. This allows us to proactively resolve these issues before they cause any problems for our customers or even our own team. Additionally, the ability to see a high-level overview of network issues and traffic throughput provides valuable insights. It's important to remember that we're currently only using the essentials package, which is the most basic offering.

What needs improvement?

To improve customer onboarding, Auvik could consider offering a free tier of the product. This could be a discovery-only model, allowing potential customers to explore the software's features without a financial commitment. Alternatively, a per-site pricing model could be implemented for initial trials. This would enable them to experience the value Auvik brings to their specific network size before committing to a full subscription. The initial cost can be a hurdle for smaller businesses, but they often recognize the value after using the product. The challenge lies in getting them past that initial barrier.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Auvik Network Management for almost two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Auvik is stable and we are always notified ahead of time of any scheduled maintenance.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Auvik is easy to scale once the deployment is done. We scaled up from ten to over 100 within a couple of days.

How are customer service and support?

Out of all the SaaS products I use, Auvik's technical support team stands out as the absolute best. They consistently impress me with their professionalism and deep technical knowledge. They are, without a doubt, the most effective support team I've had the pleasure of interacting with.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously relied on a network monitoring solution that is no longer actively maintained by the vendor. While the vendor has released a newer product, it fell short of our needs during our evaluation. In our search for a replacement, we prioritized network monitoring solutions. Unfortunately, neither the original product nor the vendor's new offering aligned with this requirement. While both products aimed to address network monitoring needs, they lacked the established reputation we were seeking within the industry.

How was the initial setup?

Our deployment of Auvik involved a staged approach, which took a significant amount of time upfront for research, development, and planning. The actual deployment of the Auvik itself was relatively quick. The most time-consuming aspect was customizing alerts to align with our specific business needs. This customization likely took our team a combined total of more than five to ten hours. While I primarily performed the deployment myself, a team of two or three people could have completed it seamlessly.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I understand Auvik's value proposition, but the retail price might seem high at first glance. However, for commercial businesses, the cost becomes quite reasonable when considering the broader commercial benefits. Our challenge lies in targeting small businesses and educational institutions. These customers, often with tighter budgets, may not fully grasp the value of proactive monitoring. This makes it difficult to convince them of the product's worth.

Despite this hurdle, we have successfully sold the product to these customer segments. The value it delivers is undeniable, and we haven't had a single instance where a customer needed to be removed from the service due to lack of benefit.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate Auvik Network Management ten out of ten.

We have 100 engineers that utilize Auvik.

Agents deployed to network probes are automatically maintained. This is a natural advantage of using a cloud-hosted service for Auvik. Since the software resides on the vendor's cloud infrastructure, they handle product maintenance and updates. This translates to a lighter workload for our team, as there's no need for manual maintenance on our end.

I definitely recommend Auvik to others and have proactively encouraged friends and colleagues in the industry to consider the product. However, it's important to acknowledge that Auvik might not be the perfect fit for every business model. Additionally, the price point can be a challenge depending on the scale of your deployment.

Good dashboard and alerts with helpful support
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution allows us to spend less time on setup and maintenance and less time on issue resolution."
  • "The tutorial could be a little bit more comprehensive."

What is our primary use case?

We're using it just to monitor customer equipment and make backups for network device configuration changes. We're using maybe one percent of what it's capable of doing. We're trying to get some of our stuff straightened out since whoever set up our Auvik did not do a great job of organizing it.

What is most valuable?

I like the alerting. It integrates with our ticketing system. I like the fact that it integrates with our ticketing system so that we can open tickets and close tickets for network outages.

I like that it can actually log in and make backups of multiple types of equipment. We have a lot of different customers out there with a lot of different equipment, and this one tool can actually log into anything. We haven't found one that it can't yet. It can log in to almost any piece of equipment and make backups for it, monitor changes, et cetera, if any network changes happen. We can also monitor network usage at different locations and check for overallocation.

It provides us with an intuitive interface that supports ease of use. Their website is very easy to use. This ease of use helps with troubleshooting network issues. We use the product a lot to troubleshoot. We don't use it as much as we'd like to. That's one of the aspects that we're working towards. It is capable of doing a lot more than how we're using it for currently.

They have a dashboard, and a topology map. I've used their topology map a few times. It actually shows you the connections between different devices. That has helped a lot in terms of finding how equipment is connected and finding loopholes in your network. This dashboard and network map give us a real-time picture of our entire network. I have found it to be very easy to work with.

It has helped us decrease our mean time to resolution, however, at this time, we don't really use it enough. I wish we were able to use it more. That said, I can see what the features are capable of doing. It's just that we haven't actually had that benefit yet.

The solution allows us to spend less time on setup and maintenance and less time on issue resolution.

What needs improvement?

The tutorial could be a little bit more comprehensive. Their online training is one area that needs improvement.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for six months. The company's been using it a bit longer.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I've had zero experience with stability issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution seems to be very scalable.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support seems to be very knowledgeable. They handle tickets in order once they come. They do everything fine. They've been able to resolve issues. Once, they just couldn't do something that we were asking them to do due to their policy. That said, it's fine.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have used different solutions in the past. This is more network-oriented. If you know how to use either tool, you'll definitely realize the benefits right away.

How was the initial setup?

I was not involved in the initial setup.

Whenever we make a network change or whenever we add a device, it requires some maintenance.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I'm not aware of the exact pricing of the product.

What other advice do I have?

We're customers and end-users.

I'd rate the solution nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Provides visibility into remote and distributed networks globally
Pros and Cons
  • "Auvik allows me to filter by network elements, so I can get a quick glance at a customer's infrastructure without looking through handmade diagrams. It provides me with an overview of how everything is laid out. From there, I can really drill down into individual inventories and switch ports. For example, I can determine what the issue is, but I don't need to be on the premises and log into customer equipment. It saves a lot of time."
  • "I would like to see some better training or public resources. It's not just Auvik's fault. Our company has a responsibility to explain the toolset and everything it can do. Many of our engineers don't realize how powerful it is. Due to a lack of documentation about Auvik's capabilities, so much can go over the heads of engineers who don't spend much time with it."

What is our primary use case?

We are an Auvik reseller, and we manage Auvik instances for our clients. We use Auvik to monitor our customers' network infrastructure and troubleshoot any issues that may arise. Auvik is typically deployed on the data center side of a company. If they have multiple branches, we will deploy an on-premise jump box running the collector. We usually manage the corporate data center for each client and the network infrastructure for remote branches.

Our company has between 500 and 1,000 employees, and we have around 150 customers using Auvik. Those companies range in size from 50 employees to thousands.

How has it helped my organization?

Auvik provides an overview of a company's infrastructure that helps you identify and solve problems from a single pane of glass. Without Auvik, you would need two or three times as much work to log into these devices individually and look at the back tables. It's great for identifying when things go offline if the spanning tree has identified an issue. You can pinpoint where in the series of commands something has broken. Overall, we've probably reduced the related network monitoring work by one-third.

Auvik is automating aspects that we hadn't even considered because it was too much overhead. Rather than reducing the time spent on tasks, it has enabled us to perform new operations that we weren't doing in the past. It's added a benefit in that way.

The visibility into remote and distributed networks globally Auvik provides is essential. If something goes offline, you can go back through the alerts, even if you can't access that device to look through the logs. It has saved me hours of time troubleshooting. I can do something that would've taken me an hour in 15 minutes. From my own experience, I've been able to resolve problems much faster and made myself more available for something that could have taken a lot longer.

Auvik keeps device inventories updated, especially if a new network element is added that we are unaware of, like an end user plugging in a switch at their desk or endpoints in general. We don't use Auvik often for endpoint management or visibility, but it's great for network infrastructure visibility.

What is most valuable?

Auvik allows me to filter by network elements, so I can get a quick glance at a customer's infrastructure without looking through handmade diagrams. It provides me with an overview of how everything is laid out. From there, I can really drill down into individual inventories and switch ports. For example, I can determine what the issue is, but I don't need to be on the premises and log into customer equipment. It saves a lot of time. The network visualization is pretty and fun to look at.

Monitoring and management in Auvik are relatively easy once you've had somebody show you how to do it or you've taken some classes. It's not entirely intuitive initially, but I find it relatively simple to use now.

What needs improvement?

I would like to see some better training or public resources. It's not just Auvik's fault. Our company has a responsibility to explain the toolset and everything it can do. Many of our engineers don't realize how powerful it is. Due to a lack of documentation about Auvik's capabilities, so much can go over the heads of engineers who don't spend much time with it.

Most engineers are fine with taking some time to learn how to use it properly, but there are several engineers who don't know how to use it without spending the time. Auvik misses out on the wider base of engineers that could actively use it.

For how long have I used the solution?

I don't know how long the company has been using it, but I have been using it at my current job for roughly a year and two years at my previous job.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I've never really had a stability problem with Auvik, and if there ever is an outage, it won't be the end of the world for our clients.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is pretty good. It depends on how your company is scaled, but I believe Auivk can scale well. At the same time, our environments don't change too much, so I can't speak about huge enterprise environments.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We had a homebrewed solution that I've used before. I don't remember what it was called, but it also used SNMP credentials for monitoring networks. We also had a platform called ConnectWise Automate that managed some infrastructure, but it does not manage the networking part of the infrastructure. It mostly managed servers and hosts and some endpoints. It's huge that Auvik can reach all of those.

The previous solution was on-premises. Auvik's cloud-based solution makes it a lot easier, especially for a distributed enterprise. We have so many different customers with data centers, so it's crucial to have the ability to monitor and manage the solution remotely and switch through different tenants under our primary client login. It's a pain if I have to log in to someone's network and pull up their on-premise monitoring system, especially if part of their network is down and that tool is not accessible.

How was the initial setup?

I am involved in deployments of Auvik for new customers or when customers open up new sites. Deploying Auvik is straightforward. It was initially implemented before I started with this company. When we acquire new clients, I set up the network probe and pull their tenancy into ours. The network map populates about two hours after you deploy the connector.

It takes about 15 minutes to install the collector, then you need to ensure that you have all the correct device login information and SNMP credentials. That can take a long time depending on the number of devices, and the type of credentials. You also need to ensure your documentation is correct. That process can take anywhere from half an hour to a full day.

Auvik requires some maintenance, but it mostly just works. You need to comb through it once in a while if you're swapping out device infrastructure or spinning up sites. If things are being added to or removed from the network you need to ensure that it's representing your environment accurately.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

To make an educated comparison, I'd need to know the other tools' capabilities in pricing. I'm not in management, so I didn't evaluate competing products, but I do know that Auvik saves a lot of time for critical responses and maintaining network inventory.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Auvik eight out of 10. I recommend first deploying Auvik in a scaled test environment, so you can break things without impacting the customer. You should see what it can do and how you can troubleshoot using it. I was sold on it once I saw the value in the response times.

Pros and Cons
  • "I found the ease of setup to be a helpful feature. The appliance was quite quick to get running. The fact that Auvik is a cloud-based solution, as opposed to an on-prem solution, meant there was one less thing to worry about. I didn't have to configure another device or provision a server and support it myself."
  • "I require the monitoring of Linux devices and it doesn't support them. Although we've done a trial, we're not going to carry on with it. We've already gone with another product. Also, seeing the topology is quite useful, but it's not really suitable for a large enterprise."

What is our primary use case?

It is used for network monitoring.

How has it helped my organization?

Auvik hasn't really improved things for us. We tried Auvik, but it didn't meet our needs.

What is most valuable?

I found the ease of setup to be a helpful feature. The appliance was quite quick to get running. The fact that Auvik is a cloud-based solution, as opposed to an on-prem solution, meant there was one less thing to worry about. I didn't have to configure another device or provision a server and support it myself. It was easier having it supported by someone else.

The interface is also quite nice. Another part that is very easy to use is the monitoring and management functions. Ease of use is awesome.

The overall intuitiveness of the visualization was very good.

What needs improvement?

I require the monitoring of Linux devices and it doesn't support them. Although we've done a trial, we're not going to carry on with it. We've already gone with another product.

Also, seeing the topology is quite useful, but it's not really suitable for a large enterprise.

It also wasn't able to inventory everything. We're using Lansweeper, which pulls the serial of every single IP device, but Auvik only seemed to be interested in SNMP. It didn't care about non-SNMP devices. The solution needs to move past just having SNMP. If it could have other ways, like an agent, that would make things easier. The lack of being able to communicate with non-SNMP devices was the issue.

For how long have I used the solution?

I used Auvik as a trial for a couple of weeks.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It was very stable. There were no outages that I was aware of.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Because it's cloud-based, it scales almost infinitely.

How are customer service and support?

I didn't need to contact their technical support. The documentation was quite good. It was quite easy to get going.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Our current product was out-of-support, so we were looking for alternatives.

How was the initial setup?

The initial deployment was very easy. We used the VMware template. It took under an hour after the collector was implemented for the network to start to populate. The actual deployment took about 20 minutes.

We deployed it in a test network. Obviously, we were not going to let an unknown product loose on the entire enterprise network.

It was just me involved in the deployment and there was no maintenance required.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

If you're a small company, Auvik is probably quite reasonable. But we've got 500 servers, so pricing suddenly became a lot more of an issue. There needs to be better bulk pricing for it.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated Nagios and Spiceworks as well. We decided to try out Auvik because we were looking around and wanted to try everything we could.

What other advice do I have?

Make sure that all your devices are SNMP-capable before implementing it.

Auvik was quite good at what it did, which is monitoring SNMP devices, but it didn't have enough there to monitor an IP generic device. If it wasn't SNMP, it didn't really work. It needs more agents and more monitoring methods.

Provides a close to real-time picture of our network
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable features for me are network monitoring and alerting."
  • "There's room for improvement in the interface."

What is our primary use case?

Auvik is our main network monitoring platform.

We were struggling to monitor our network hardware for uptime, bandwidth usage, and errors, all while managing firmware updates and configuration changes. Thankfully, Auvik solved all these problems for us.

In our VMware environment, we use a virtual appliance for Auvik. This appliance acts as a data concentrator, collecting information from all our network hardware. The collected information is then uploaded to the cloud by the virtual appliance.

How has it helped my organization?

Auvik's network map provides a close to real-time picture of our network.

The network map is user-friendly, though initially, the text can be a bit difficult to read due to its spread-out nature. However, zooming in and navigating different sections allows for easy readability. Thankfully, all the objects are clickable, providing instant access to detailed information for each one as needed.

I took advantage of Auvik's 30-day trial, and within that timeframe, I became thoroughly convinced of its benefits.

Auvik has significantly improved our mean time to resolution. Before using Auvik, troubleshooting network issues could take hours of investigation to pinpoint the problem. Now, with Auvik's features, I can typically identify the cause within just a few minutes.

Auvik allows us to spend less time on maintenance and issue resolution.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features for me are network monitoring and alerting. This means I automatically receive an email notification whenever an issue arises, eliminating the need to wait for users to report problems.

What needs improvement?

There's room for improvement in the interface. While we only have one location, logging in presents a world map designed for multiple sites. This unnecessary extra step to access the information I need could be eliminated by offering an option to disable the world map view.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Auvik Network Management for one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Auvik Network Management is stable. We have not had any problems.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

While our current environment handles our needs well, Auvik's easy scalability allows us to seamlessly expand into a larger environment in the future. The multi-site dashboard lets us manage everything from a central location whenever we're ready to grow.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support responds within 24 hours.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

At my previous company, I relied on a combination of SolarWinds, Lansweeper, and an open-source tool for IT asset management. While Auvik offers a more user-friendly experience compared to these free options, it doesn't provide the same level of detailed functionality as SolarWinds.

How was the initial setup?

The initial deployment was straightforward. The deployment took a couple of days. One person was required for the deployment.

What about the implementation team?

Auvik helped us deploy the system remotely. The on-site process itself was very straightforward: it involved downloading the software, installing it, and then entering information into the interface.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Auvik holds its own compared to other contenders. It's priced fairly, avoiding any underestimation of its value. What truly sets it apart is the per-network device licensing structure, with additional device monitoring included at no extra cost.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate Auvik Network Management nine out of ten.

Minimal maintenance is required.

Provides us with a near real-time picture of our network's activity, network topology, and stability
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature for us in Auvik is the network topology."
  • "The Auvik interface, while functional, doesn't feel as intuitive as some competing products."

What is our primary use case?

We use Auvik Network Management to monitor client sites for various network issues. Auvik provides us with a view of the entire network, including all connected devices. This allows us to visualize how these devices are interconnected and how data flows throughout the network.

How has it helped my organization?

A network topology map provides us with a near real-time picture of our network's activity. It constantly updates as scans run or new devices are added. Typically, within 30 seconds to a minute, the map reflects the new device, making it one of the most current representations of our network's state available.

The topology map is user-friendly. Nearly every element on the map is clickable, allowing us to zoom in on specific components with ease. This interactivity makes the map far more useful than a static image, as we can quickly drill down to the precise area we need to investigate.

Auvik's benefits were clear from the start. Previously, we lacked any tools to understand what was happening on our clients' networks. This made it difficult to work with potential customers. When visiting a site, we couldn't readily assess their needs and provide a quote for our services. Auvik's network discovery function was a game-changer. It revealed devices on customer networks they weren't even aware of, instantly justifying the investment. This level of visibility had been completely absent before. The previous tools we used were nowhere near as efficient. Additionally, Auvik's ability to monitor client sites and set up alerts provided invaluable insights, something else that was previously lacking. Overall, the value of Auvik was undeniable and immediate.

Auvik helps reduce the mean time to resolution of network issues. Auvik allows us to see exactly which device and port are experiencing issues. This significantly narrows down the problem area, especially in larger facilities. By pinpointing the exact switch and port, Auvik tells us precisely where to go to investigate and resolve the issue quickly, streamlining the process for the network team.

Auvik significantly reduces the time we spend on setting up networks, maintaining them, and resolving issues. Before using Auvik, our technicians had to perform lengthy site surveys. This involved the technician spending several hours at the customer's location, depending on the size of the site. During this time, the technician would physically examine network rooms, walk the entire building, and manually count the number of devices and their locations. This process required a significant amount of time analyzing the customer's site, including all the computers and other devices. In contrast, with Auvik, we can now map a complete network in under an hour. Auvik also automatically identifies the connected devices and the number of access points. This translates to a two-thirds reduction in the time a technician spends on-site gathering information.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature for us in Auvik is the network topology. This feature creates a visual map of all connected devices on the network, showing their location. This is incredibly helpful when we need to locate a specific device, as it significantly narrows down the search. Overall, the network topology is the functionality we utilize the most within Auvik.

What needs improvement?

The Auvik interface, while functional, doesn't feel as intuitive as some competing products. Compared to modern software, the design appears a bit dated. After using it for a couple of years, I've learned where things are located, but I still find myself occasionally clicking the wrong buttons because the layout isn't very logical. Overall, the interface could benefit from some improvements to make it more user-friendly.

The Ubiquiti line of network products is gaining significant popularity, but Auvik currently struggles to gather in-depth information from them. It's unclear whether this is due to a lack of communication between the two companies. It seems beneficial for both parties to explore a partnership to improve data availability. While Auvik emphasizes its close relationship with Ubiquiti, there's still an information gap compared to other vendors. It's difficult to say definitively if this is an issue with Auvik or Ubiquiti, but initiating contact between the right people at both companies could likely lead to a solution.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Auvik Network Management for two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Auvik Network Management is stable. We have never encountered a stability issue.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Auvik's scalability is very impressive. We haven't encountered any limitations on its capacity to handle our needs. In our experience, it seems to be adaptable for any size of network environment, from very small to extremely large.

How was the initial setup?

Auvik's deployment process was straightforward. Their clear instructions, broken down into three steps, made it easy to follow. The system wouldn't allow us to proceed until the current step was completed, ensuring we didn't miss anything. There may have been some initial bumps a few years ago, but a recent deployment we did just a couple of weeks back showcased a noticeably smoother process. It seems Auvik has continuously improved its deployment experience.

While deploying the system, two people were involved. The second person's role was to ensure we were all in agreement on the desired functionalities and configuration. This was especially important for the advanced configurations, which went beyond getting the system to a basic functional state. The advanced configurations, such as defining the types of alerts and ensuring they weren't overwhelming, required a collaborative effort. It took a couple of people to sit down, think through them carefully, and analyze what truly mattered to avoid generating meaningless alerts.

The first deployment of our system did take a couple of weeks. This was because we were still refining the alerts and simply didn't know what to expect. We were unsure how background noise would affect the system's ability to detect silence. As a result, the initial deployment took longer to get everything configured exactly how we wanted it. Now, however, subsequent deployments are much faster. Typically, a new site can be up and running within a couple of hours, depending on the specific setup and credentials required. Overall, the entire process from start to finish is now generally completed within two hours.

What about the implementation team?

The implementation was completed in-house.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Auvik offers two publicly available pricing tiers, but there are also additional options that require contacting a sales representative. Despite this, Auvik seems to prioritize customer needs. Their pricing models are generally clear and competitive. In fact, Auvik can sometimes be more affordable than some of the bigger players in the market. Through conversations with their sales team, we found that Auvik is willing to work with customers to ensure they can get started with the software, even if it means offering a customized license that fits their budget. This customer-centric approach was valuable to us.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

In our search for a network management solution, we explored various products, but none quite fit the bill. Existing options didn't offer the comprehensive functionality we needed. Ultimately, we chose Auvik because it combined several functionalities we desired.

One competitor, RapidFire Tools, offered some network discovery features. However, their access limitations were a concern. We needed a tool with deeper network access than what they provided, which wouldn't have been readily granted on our clients' websites. Another contender, Domotz, also emerged later, but their hardware requirement on the network was a deal-breaker for us.

Auvik, on the other hand, seemed to seamlessly work with any network-connected computer. Its scanning capabilities were far superior to both competitors. Additionally, the ability to map the network topology comprehensively without requiring extra hardware solidified our decision. We tested Domotz for three months and RapidFire Tools for a year. The year-long contract was the only option available. While both ran concurrently, our initial exposure to Auvik at an industry event presentation, sparked our interest.

Upon setting up the Auvik trial, we were impressed by the salesperson's ability to grasp our client needs quickly and demonstrate the tool's functionality effectively. This helped us realize the value proposition almost immediately. Auvik's superior feature set, compared to the others, stood out. The ease of setting up and getting started further solidified our choice. In fact, our team was convinced of Auvik's value before the trial even reached its halfway point. It was that good.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate Auvik Network Management eight out of ten.

Some critical devices on our network are not currently billed for because Auvik cannot monitor our Ubiquiti firewall. This lack of monitoring means we can't even tell if a device is up or down, which is crucial information. Fortunately, we've found some workarounds to gather basic information about these devices for our Auvik network monitoring system. The good news is that the support representatives have confirmed these workarounds won't incur any additional billing. They've even offered to help us implement them. While these devices won't be fully monitored through their standard system, the support team has gone the extra mile to ensure we can still gather some essential information about their status within our network.

Auvik is a self-updating system. Once we set it up, there's minimal ongoing maintenance required. The only time we typically need to revisit the software is when we add new equipment to the network. In those cases, we simply ensure Auvik recognizes and inventories the new devices. Otherwise, Auvik runs seamlessly in the background. We only interact with it again when an alert pops up, notifying us of a network issue that requires attention.

The most important advice I can offer is to be prepared for the learning curve associated with Auvik's interface. Navigating the interface and finding specific features can be the most challenging aspect initially. However, once you become familiar with the layout, Auvik's capabilities are extensive. While the interface might not be as intuitive or modern as some users expect, rest assured that Auvik can handle any network management task you need it to perform. Just be patient as you become acquainted with its functionalities.

Is easy to use, provides real-time visibility, and reduces our MTTR
Pros and Cons
  • "Auvik's reliability is impressive."
  • "I would like Auvik to alert on IP conflicts."

What is our primary use case?

We use Auvik for monitoring and alerting on customer environments.

We lacked visibility into specific aspects of our Local Area Network. Therefore, we required a solution capable of monitoring and alerting us about port activity and other relevant information at the switch level.

How has it helped my organization?

Although Auvik does require some experience and knowledge within IT, it is easy to use. Auvik works relatively well with a great intuitive interface.

Auvik's ease of use makes it easy to get to the root of the problem.

Auvik's network map provides a real-time picture of our network as long as the agent is up.

The only waiting time we faced was for the agent's installation and subsequent discovery process. This typically took around 24 hours to ensure it had enough time to identify all network devices.

Before implementing Auvik, we could not readily determine switch outages. This necessitated manual inquiry and on-site troubleshooting. Fortunately, Auvik has cut our mean time to resolution down by 50 percent.

What is most valuable?

Auvik's reliability is impressive. It effectively alerts us to switch outages and high port utilization, making it a perfect fit for our needs. We are extremely satisfied with Auvik and have no plans to switch to another solution.

What needs improvement?

While Auvik provides us with good network visibility, there are some features we'd like to see implemented in the future. Specifically, we're looking for an alert system that notifies us when new devices are added to the network. For example, one of our customers experiences recurring issues with an unidentified router appearing on their network. Unfortunately, Auvik doesn't currently alert us when this ghost router appears.

I would like Auvik to alert on IP conflicts. Although it doesn't happen often, we sometimes see duplicate entries for IP addresses.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Auvik for six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have never had any stability issues with Auvik.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Auvik is highly scalable. We currently use it on networks ranging from small shops with around 40-50 workstations to larger locations with 500-600 endpoints. I am confident that it can easily scale to even larger networks.

How are customer service and support?

I have contacted Auvik's support team a few times and they were consistently great. Their resolution time was super quick.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

The initial deployment is extremely easy. If we have an understanding of the customer's environment, the deployment takes five minutes and one person to complete.

What about the implementation team?

The implementation is completed in-house.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Auvik's pricing falls within an acceptable range for us. While management typically handles pricing negotiations, I haven't heard any concerns from them suggesting Auvik's cost is excessive.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate Auvik ten out of ten.

Auvik does most of the maintenance and they advise us before they do it.

I recommend trying Auvik with a trial version if possible, followed by the available Auvik training. While the initial training is not mandatory, I highly encourage newcomers to try the software first to get hands-on experience. This will make the subsequent training, if available, much easier to grasp.

Backup automation reduces repetitive work and network map helps with troubleshooting, saving us time
Pros and Cons
  • "The network monitoring and backups of specific devices are really impressive. We've seen very good responses from our staff regarding the backup functionality. You can add a product, such as a switch and, once the product is added, it backs it up for you."
  • "I'd like to be able to deep dive more into the reporting. The reporting is still being scaled and built out and I would love to see some additional products being added to the stack. For example, Auvik covers certain types of firewalls, but I would like to see more enterprise stuff added to the stack."

What is our primary use case?

Our use cases are around network monitoring. That was our biggest challenge.

How has it helped my organization?

The most important thing to me has been the benefits around visibility. If I don't have visibility then I can't report on things and the tool doesn't work.

And when it comes to reducing repetitive tasks through automation, it has absolutely done so, for example, through the backup features and functionality. Also, from an auditing point of view, it has greatly helped us because we now don't find ourselves in a situation where we have to figure out who did what and when. It sends out reports on a user basis, meaning we know when a user was logged in. Those are all very cool features and functionality.

With the reduction in repetitive tasks for my team, at different levels, time has been freed up. Another factor in saving time is definitely due to the improved fault finding we can do now. Because we have a network map, when something goes wrong, such as what couldn't communicate with which device, it saves us good chunks of time.

What is most valuable?

The network monitoring and backups of specific devices are really impressive. We've seen very good responses from our staff regarding the backup functionality. You can add a product, such as a switch and, once the product is added, it backs it up for you.

The ease of use of the monitoring and management functions depends on what level of engineer you are and how you perceive it, but to me, it's quite simple to use and user-friendly. The overall intuitiveness of the network visualization is about eight out of 10. That aspect is actually quite good in the product. There are small tweaks and improvements that can be made, but overall, it is really good.

It also does change-tracking, which is a big aspect for us. If someone makes a change on a device, Auvik will report on it for us.

In addition, it helps keep the devices up-to-date. At a minimum, it gives us a monitoring feature on the versions of the devices. If it can't auto-update, the key here is visibility. As long as we have that visibility, there's a lot we can do with that info. The visibility saves us time.

And while it's not a single, integrated platform for everything, because I still use some of my other network tools to complete some other tasks, Auvik is a comprehensive platform.

What needs improvement?

I would like to see some improvements in some of the reporting functionality, meaning I'd like to be able to deep dive more into the reporting.

The reporting is still being scaled and built out and I would love to see some additional products being added to the stack. For example, Auvik covers certain types of firewalls, but I would like to see more enterprise stuff added to the stack. These aren't exact examples, but it may cover Sophos and FortiGate but not Palo Alto.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Auvik for about six months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

So far, I have found it to be quite stable. I haven't found the cloud provider to be offline and I haven't found that I was unable to log in to the cloud portal yet.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This is a quite easily scalable solution because it's a cloud platform. It's an easy rollout and the solution should be able to scale very simply. It shouldn't be difficult to scale out if we want more agents or more installs. It would be quite quick.

We have it deployed in a few different locations.

How are customer service and support?

I haven't needed to contact their technical support yet.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We use different vendors' products and they have been troublesome or quite challenging. We did not have something that can do proper network monitoring around the devices themselves. We needed something that can scan the network, find the switches and devices, assign licensing, and then monitor them from there on out.

We're in the middle of transitioning, so we are still using the previous solution. It's a mix of SolarWinds and Darktrace. Those are two of the two bigger ones. This is a process, which means we won't jump to Auvik only and not use anything else, but we're finding it to be a great tool when integrated into our stack with the rest of the tools. We're definitely finding value in it.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Auvik is priced in the middle tier. We have customers using bottom-tier products and those who use what I wouldn't say are necessarily higher-tier products in terms of functionality, but more extensive products. For the way that it's deployed, where the pricing only affects certain devices—meaning there are some free devices, so that you don't pay for everything—it's quite nicely priced in the middle. It's not an overpriced product, but it's also not a very cheap product. It is in a good range of pricing.

If someone is concerned about pricing, in most cases the functionality makes a strong use case and it mostly trumps the pricing. Generally, functionality wins. If you give me a product that works really well and it's a little bit more expensive, I'll take it. It doesn't make sense to sacrifice functionality for pricing.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We didn't really evaluate other options. In our specific case, Auvik came recommended by one of my friends, so we started a trial and then used it from there. I wasn't necessarily looking for just this type of network tech. It was just a happy coincidence.

What other advice do I have?

As for our team's visibility into remote and distributed networks globally, it has helped us somewhat. My team has started really integrating the product, but they've deployed it on a smaller scale at this point. It's not deployed on such a large scale yet.

Auvik, as a cloud-based solution, versus on-prem network monitoring solutions, is quite simple and intuitive to use. The cloud-based aspect is actually a very nice touch since some vendors require you to have an appliance onsite that they communicate with. It's very useful that it's a cloud-based application from an ease-of-deployment point of view. With no onsite appliance, there are fewer dependencies.

My advice would be to review and focus on the features and the functionality of the product. Don't necessarily, off the bat, just look at the pricing and say this is very expensive. With some customers, the first question is always, "What's the price?" without our having even said a word about the product. Take it for a test drive first, before you look at the pricing, so at least you know what you would be getting for that price.
