Simplified central management system with good stability and scalability
Pros and Cons
  • "Central management system for Fortinet devices that's simple, scalable, and stable, with a straightforward setup."
  • "This solution needs more experienced technical support staff. There's nothing special about it compared to other vendors."

What is our primary use case?

We used Fortinet FortiManager for managing multiple firewalls, because they had six or seven branches, so they need a single point of management. The Fortinet FortiAnalyzer was used for getting the logs out of all of these books, to store them in one place.

What is most valuable?

What I found most valuable about Fortinet FortiManager is its simplicity. I didn't see anything special about it compared to other vendors, and I'm working with multiple vendors, but when talking about this solution, it's always the simplicity that's valuable.

What needs improvement?

There's nothing special about it compared to other vendors, except for its simplicity.

This solution needs more experienced technical support staff.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've worked with Fortinet FortiManager for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Stability for this solution is good. I didn't see any issues with our customer.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I wasn't able to try Fortinet FortiManager on enterprise customers, or large-scale customers, but for small and medium-sized businesses, it was more than okay. It's scalable.

How are customer service and support?

How good the technical support will be depends on the product where we need them. For the firewalls, all of them are good. For Fortinet FortiManager, I didn't see a lot of experienced people in there, but I didn't need them for complicated issues. It's the technical support team for firewalls who was very good.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup for this solution was straightforward. As for its deployment, the design and planning took around three months, e.g. we talked about the design, project plan, scope of work, etc. Implementation just took one week.

What was our ROI?

For the ROI, for a five-year project, Fortinet FortiManager would be the best option to use.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

This is an affordable solution, and it's based on the number of devices. I did read that the licensing model has changed recently, but I'm not using the new licensing model.

What other advice do I have?

There was a solution we used last 2021. We implemented Fortinet, and it was the major project we were dealing with at the time. We used everything from Fortinet, e.g. analytics management, logs, etc. It was only Fortinet we implemented, and not any other solution.

We implemented Fortinet FortiManager for orchestration and management, then for the loads, we implemented Fortinet FortiAnalyzer. For firewalls, we have 4800F and 60F. We've implemented them in multiple sites, so those were the main components.

During the implementation, I jumped between versions and did some upgrades, because with Fortinet, there are new versions that only work for short periods, so I had to upgrade the version multiple times during the implementation.

The deployment for Fortinet FortiManager was via a virtual machine, and it was on private cloud. We used the customer infrastructure to implement and install Fortinet FortiManager and FortiAnalyzer, so that particular cloud was owned by the customer, so there's no cloud provider for that.

We have 500 users of this solution. It was a medium-sized project.

I didn't see anything missing on Fortinet FortiManager. I like it the way it is. I'm happy with it, so I can't think of anything they should add in terms of features.

I would give Fortinet FortiManager the highest score because even a junior can implement it. It does not require too much knowledge or scale to implement a project, so I'm rating it a ten out of ten.

Provides centralized management and makes it easy to configure all firewalls with the same configuration
Pros and Cons
  • "The capability of centralized management is valuable. We can configure all firewall boxes with the same configuration."
  • "The compatibility with legacy products should be better. It would also be nice if the software could manage other devices from Fortinet and third parties."

What is our primary use case?

It is used for the standardized configuration of all the firewalls that we have installed for our customers.

What is most valuable?

The capability of centralized management is valuable. We can configure all firewall boxes with the same configuration.

What needs improvement?

The compatibility with legacy products should be better. It would also be nice if the software could manage other devices from Fortinet and third parties.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using it for a short period. It has been almost six months. We are a reseller, and currently, we have six to eight technicians who are using it.

What other advice do I have?

It is fine for us. I would rate it a ten out of ten.

Provides good and detailed log management
Pros and Cons
  • "Provides good and detailed log management."
  • "Wizards could be improved in pushing policies."

What is our primary use case?

Our use case is for management and back up configuration. I work in the IT security division.

What is most valuable?

This is a good product if you're looking for a central management solution. FortiManager provides good log management and more details than other solutions for logs.

What needs improvement?

I'd like to see the improvement of wizards when it comes to pushing policies and copying, VPNs, etc. Sometimes Fortinet changes its subscriptions. A few years ago Fortinet Firewall had capabilities for use in the cloud environment; they then changed the subscription and it was no longer part of the subscription, forcing the customer to buy an additional license. The technical support needs to improve. They moved their call center to India and although I have a special PIN code for the support team, they hang up after a minute or so and I need to redial.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable but it does require regular upgrades.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We can scale but it requires the purchase of additional licenses.

How was the initial setup?

We deploy this solution for our clients. It's a pretty straightforward process for us.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price is reasonable, especially when compared to Cisco or Palo Alto. It also has a free version for smaller organizations.

What other advice do I have?

I rate this solution eight out of 10.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

You can see if workstations or services are affected by an attack with a simple click
Pros and Cons
  • "For the whole security fabric from Fortinet, with a simple click you can see if some workstations or services are affected by an attack. You can really easily quarantine it, check the solution, and fix it."
  • "Fortinet is releasing quite a lot of new versions and I would say that most of the versions are not well tested before they're pushed out. Even the new versions sometimes are a bit buggy before it's all correct."

What is our primary use case?

FortiManager is a virtual appliance, you can have it in a cloud, buy your own license, or pay for the solution as a service. It's very helpful because you can manage many products from other customers, just from the cloud, which is where you administrate domains for all the customers you might have. You only have one point of deployment of the new FortiGates, for example, FortiSwitches, FortiAPs with a single click that you do not need to deploy the configuration on a unit itself. So it means, for example, you can just send the new boxes to new offices and from the cloud FortiManager, you just let some technical guy send it to the internet. It gets the serial number of the FortiManager. It can be paired and the configuration can be directly downloaded. You don't even need to touch the box physically. So that's an amazing feature.

What is most valuable?

For the whole security fabric from Fortinet, with a simple click you can see if some workstations or services are affected by an attack. You can really easily quarantine it, check the solution, and fix it. It's very good from a security perspective.

What needs improvement?

Fortinet is releasing quite a lot of new versions and I would say that most of the versions are not well tested before they're pushed out. Even the new versions sometimes are a bit buggy before it's all correct.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using FortiManager for six to seven years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We don't have any issues with stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability is good.

How are customer service and technical support?

Our support was often sent to a foreign country and they didn't speak good English. But the second level of support was all perfect.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Checkpoint has a kind of manager that is similar. I think Palo Alto and Cisco have something similar as well.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was straightforward and so simple. You don't need to know the functionality that much and it guides you on how to deploy it correctly. It's quite simple to set up as a solution.

The deployment takes a few days.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate it a nine out of ten.

It does not make much sense if you only have one FortiGate. If you have multiple devices and you can share some kind of templates or configuration template for security rules then this is a product you should use.

In the next release, there should be a little bit better of a deployment for applications that should also be relevant for mobile phones.

Integrates easily with other Fortinet products and is very stable
Pros and Cons
  • "A fully integrated solution."
  • "Can be difficult to configure."

What is our primary use case?

We work with the FortiManager tool to configure several solutions for our customers. Generally, our customers already have the product installed on their network. We work as independent consultants.

What needs improvement?

The product could be improved by making it a little easier to configure. Sometimes it's a  bit complicated to find the right way to configure. For example, if you want to have a link between a FortiGate to a FortiSwitch, sometimes it's not so clear. Sometimes there is a problem because U.S. FortiGate has one version and FortiSwitch has another version of the operating system and it's difficult to create, to have a link between two devices, and we have to do an upgrade before using it.

I would like the configuration to be easier. If that is solved then the product is perfect.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's a stable product.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I have no experience with scalability.

How are customer service and technical support?

The technical support for us is great. We get our support from Fortinet in Belgium, so we can communicate directly with a technician in Belgium. It's perfect.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We also train in Cisco and are certified and support Cisco, so we know that solution very well. The difference between the two is that Cisco is always more complicated than Fortinet.

How was the initial setup?

I think the initial setup is too complicated because there are several versions of the operating systems, so you don't have directly connections between two devices. In the study guide it's easier but on site it's not so easy.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I think the pricing is reasonable, it's cheaper than Cisco.

What other advice do I have?

It's a good solution if the customer has all Fortinet products. The advantage of Fortinet is that if you have all their products - FortiGate or FortiSwitch or FortiController, FortiWeb, FortiClient, it's an integrated solution but if you have only Fortinet Switch, it's no more interesting than Cisco.

I would rate this product an eight out of 10.

Enables our clients to monitor multiple firewalls in one place
Pros and Cons
  • "The product is a combination of management and monitoring from the same interface."
  • "The areas that need improvement are implemenation and support. In terms of implementation, it mainly needs clear documentation."

How has it helped my organization?

One site we worked on had something like 10 firewalls in different branches, and the security admin there needed to monitor the firewalls from a centralized place, so we deployed FortiManager and configured it so he could monitor things from one place.

At another site, we use it in backup mode for automatic backup.

What is most valuable?

The product is a combination of management and monitoring from the same interface.

What needs improvement?

The areas that need improvement are implementation and support. In terms of implementation, it mainly needs clear documentation. There are many features that are not mentioned in the documentation.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been using FortiManager for almost one year. On some sites we use the latest version, and for other sites we use version 6.4.

We have done implementations of a number of Fortinet products such as Email and FortiWeb firewalls. We have implemented the portfolio of Fortinet products.

How are customer service and technical support?

For FortiManager, technical support is good, but it's not excellent. It's not perfect because there are times when it takes longer for them to reply to cases. And, as I mentioned, sometimes we can't find a feature in the documentation.

How was the initial setup?

It's easy to install and it takes about two days.

What other advice do I have?

I recommend FortiManager if you have more than FortiGate firewalls or more Fortinet products.

In terms of users of the solution, our clients are between medium and enterprise in scope.

Integrates well, stable, and good technical support
Pros and Cons
  • "Fortinet FortiManager allows a full view of all the devices on the network from one location."
  • "The solution could improve by having better integration with other solutions other than Fortinet."

What is our primary use case?

Fortinet FortiManager can be used to manage all your Fortinet solutions. We are using it as a VM solution.

What is most valuable?

Fortinet FortiManager allows a full view of all the devices on the network from one location.

Fortinet FortiManager integrates will with other Fortinet solutions, such as FortiAnalyzer.

What needs improvement?

The solution could improve by having better integration with other solutions other than Fortinet.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Fortinet FortiManager for years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable, it is good for large companies to manage their devices.

We have six customers using this solution.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support is very good.

What about the implementation team?

We have one engineer that does the implementation and maintenance of the solution.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The license model they use depends on the size and is not limited to the users.

What other advice do I have?

The solution is good but we want to move to the cloud at some point to save money on infrastructure. For example, on the cloud, we would not need a server room or data center building.

I would recommend this solution to others.

I rate Fortinet FortiManager a ten out of ten.
