The SME server edition doesn't include a deploy tool but it's a really good package for management reporting purposes.

Valuable Features:

  • Relationship based data modelling
  • Flexible charting

Improvements to My Organization:

It speeds up my clients capability to prepare various non-standard management reports.

Room for Improvement:

  • Macro Editing
  • It should have an HTML text box control
  • Presentation on smart device
  • The performance of the Qlikview website is poor as it takes three minutes to open a page
  • The SME server edition does not include a deploy tool, and we have to copy updated document to the server manually which seems ridiculous

Use of Solution:

I've used it for two years.

Deployment Issues:

No issues encountered.

Stability Issues:

No issues encountered.

Scalability Issues:

No issues encountered.

Initial Setup:

It was quite straightforward.

Implementation Team:

We involved a local vendor, Shanghai EBI Strategy, and they helped us develop the solution based on our design, however, the result is not as good as expected.  In the local Chinese market, there is a lack of experienced consultants. I searched on the Qlikview forum for many tricks and solutions by myself and improved the overall data modelling structure.

ROI:

It's not bad.

Other Solutions Considered:

Yes, we also looked at BO and Microstrategy.  As Microstrategy is also a good package, we are exploring it further.

Other Advice:

It is a really good package for your management reporting purpose, as you do not rely on IT support to add/revise any reports.

•Macro Editing--you can edit expressions and (of course,) scripts. What do you mean by this?
•The performance of the Qlikview website is poor as it takes three minutes to open a page I wonder if that has to do with your server or application architecture. Apps open on our intranet portal in 1-3 seconds.

Fast access to data is a valuable feature but a less monolithic approach is needed

What is most valuable?

  • Fast access to data
  • Rapid development
  • Rich graphic interface

What needs improvement?

  • Licensing costs
  • Cloud solution
  • Less monolithic approach

For how long have I used the solution?

Six years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

No issues encountered.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No issues encountered.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Yes we did.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

8 out of 10

Technical Support:

8 out of 10

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously used SAP BW, and we changed because it had very complex development, and long development times.

How was the initial setup?

It was straightforward.

What about the implementation team?

We used a mix of an in-house team and a vendor team.

What was our ROI?

Six months.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We looked at doing either an in-house development or an ad-hoc solution from a software provide.

What other advice do I have?

You should perform a good sizing of the server, and develop a simple data model.

Start & the rest will follow. Just keep an eye open that design change to a pivot table can be problematic.

Valuable Features:

1) The ease with which self-service BI can be achieved via a small scale trail deployment

Improvements to My Organization:

The company moved from paper based reporting to full dashboard reporting in the Sales function

Room for Improvement:

Very little

Use of Solution:

2 years

Deployment Issues:

None

Stability Issues:

In some cases making a design change to a Pivot table can be problematic if an additional dimension is added to a report that has a “matrix” layout like the following:

Scalability Issues:

None – During a stress test it was able to load 38 million records without any problems on simple dual core PC with ONLY 1 GB OF RAM (absolutely amazing. I would not have believed it to be possible but I did the test myself)

Customer Service:

There are frequent follow-ups from the vendor once you register on their web site.

Initial Setup:

Very straight forward for a simple 1 application installation. Just pick 32 or 64 bit and go!

Implementation Team:

Any user can implement a simple 1 application installation, then just follow good communication protocol with the IT team to get access to central data stores and you are away.

Other Solutions Considered:

Silver, Spotfire from Tibco, Tableau Public, MicroStrategy’s free Reporting Suite, Roambi Analytics, Webalo, YellowFin, Jaspersoft

Other Advice:

Just start …the rest will follow…

A powerful user-friendly BI tool with an amazing graphic interface but security is difficult and slow to implement.

What is most valuable?

The graphic interface is amazing, it is also very user-friendly and easy for developers to iterate, modify and evolve it. Due to its "in memory" nature it is very fast and powerful.

How has it helped my organization?

It is a very easy-to-sell product. The value added is huge and the ROI is very high since the projects are done relatively fast.

What needs improvement?

Implement security model for a document can be difficult and slow to implement.

For how long have I used the solution?

3 Years

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service: Direct Communication, usually quick responsesTechnical Support: 9/10

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have worked basically with CPM tools so this is my first BI tool.

How was the initial setup?

It is very easy to install Qlikview. The important part is to size correctly the servers according to the size of the application and the number of users.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

In my company we work with many BI tools from different vendors, from SAP and Oracle to Pentaho and Qlikview.

What other advice do I have?

What I have seen is that it's addictive for the users. So if you are an IT manager and you are planning to use another BI tool, try not to show Qlikview to the users or they won´t let you change.

Enables us to build complex models very quickly and helps with data visualization
Pros and Cons
  • "Its ability to build, very quickly, very complicated models."
  • "Improvement in collaboration, between that and publishing of reports and publishing of models."

What is most valuable?

Its ability to build, very quickly, very complicated models. In our case, we use for this modeling for the calculation of cost allocation and transfer price and the like. It is very helpful. It's a really powerful tool in modeling creation.

How has it helped my organization?

It has helped us to implement the accounting management system and provide a very comprehensive solution for this. Also, I already mentioned cost allocation system, transfer pricing.

It's also very helpful in visualization of the data from our operation systems. Because we are a bank, data creation is very important for us, so it's another model.

It covers many things, including current exposure, the coverage of loans, etc. In these areas, it's the most comprehensive and most helpful of the tools we're using, based on this platform.

What needs improvement?

I would say it's not negative, but it's an issue because we also use other tools, like SAP BusinessObjects, for a long period of time, which is another product in the business intelligence area.

Improvement in collaboration, between that and publishing of reports and publishing of models. Probably that could be more comprehensive, from my point of view.

For how long have I used the solution?

Four or five years, already.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Yes it's stable. Not 100% but, really, compared to other products, it's a stable product. It's controllable. And the maintenance received from local partners is very good, at a very high level.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No problems.

How are customer service and technical support?

We have both technical support and support in the development model from the local partner of QlikView. I would rate it at a very high level.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Because the majority of BI tools are focusing on processing a significant mass of data, we were looking for a more analytical tool with the possibility to quickly build models, and we found it. On the other hand, QlikView has some constraints due to the architecture, so it may not be applicable for millions and millions and millions of data records because it requires significant expenses for the hardware. But, as an analytical tool, it's very interesting.

How was the initial setup?

It was very easy because we started by using the free version of QlikView. After that, we bought everything, including a server license. So, we had no problems with this.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

At that time, we already had BusinessObjects as a BI tool in our bank, with SAP Crystal Reports, for example, as a part of BusinessObjects. At that time, in the market, there were no alternatives in this respect, so our choice was very precise because already we used this tool and we decided to buy it.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend this product. We have a lot of reference meetings because we were the first bank in the country to implement it, this platform. So we're meeting our colleagues who are working not only in the banking industry but from telecom, from the pharmaceutical industry, etc. We recommend it.

It's one of the best products in this segment, for BI, for the automation of analytical activity within the bank or within the company. It doesn't 100% cover everything, but in the area, it works very well.
