A stable and open-source solution that has a user-friendly interface and provides seamless integrations
Pros and Cons
  • "The graphical interface is very beneficial."
  • "The product must provide more videos and training materials."

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution for workflow processes of different sectors.

What is most valuable?

The workflow builder is valuable. The graphical interface is very beneficial. We can build whatever workflow we need. Currently, we are integrating the solution with our document management system. It acts as a repository for the documents. Inbound and outbound integrations are very easy.

The solution fulfills our implementation needs. The interface is user-friendly compared to Oracle. The solution is well-known in Egypt. Even government sectors are switching to Camunda. There are a lot of materials available. The technical team did a lot of self-study. Now, we can integrate the solution with our document management system and implement the processes we need. I rate the documentation a nine out of ten.

What needs improvement?

The product must provide more videos and training materials.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The tool is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

All our implementations have 50 to 100 users.

How are customer service and support?

We use the forums when we need support. The product has a big community.

How was the initial setup?

We did not encounter any issues during the installation or while building the workflows. We implement the tool for our customers.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The most attractive feature of the product is that it is open source.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We are currently promoting the product to our customers. They are using Oracle BPEL, which is a licensed solution. They need an open-source tool. So, we are suggesting Camunda to them. Camunda is comparable with the licensed products. The competitors might provide more features compared to Camunda, but they are not that valuable.

What other advice do I have?

I recommend using the product. Overall, I rate the product an eight out of ten.

Provides flexibility for defining workflows and has a Community edition
Pros and Cons
  • "The ease with which I can define workflows is most valuable. The latest updates and flexibility that it provides around a task activity are interesting for me."
  • "Community support is basically what I'm looking for. Other than that, it is okay for now."

What is our primary use case?

We are using it for one of our workflows. We are not using the user interface per se. We are making use of JavaScript Angular for the UI. So, we're just using the engine part of Camunda.

We are using its latest version.

What is most valuable?

The ease with which I can define workflows is most valuable. The latest updates and flexibility that it provides around a task activity are interesting for me.

What needs improvement?

Community support is basically what I'm looking for. Other than that, it is okay for now.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for the past one and a half years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Its stability is okay. As far as the performance is concerned, we have our internal architectural constraints, and because of them, it is unstable, but it specifically has nothing to do with Camunda.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is easy to scale. We have about 50 to 60 users, and it is used on a daily basis.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used to use K2. We changed from K2 to Camunda mainly due to the licensing cost issues.

How was the initial setup?

It was simple. It took us about three or four weeks to deploy the first portion or first draft of BPM.

In terms of maintenance, it is okay. It doesn't require anything specific.

What about the implementation team?

We did it internally.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Its price is decent. Everything is included in the license.

The Community version is also good to start with. We are using the Community version.

What other advice do I have?

It is loosely coupled. Therefore, there is a lot of flexibility in the way we want to restrict the usage of Camunda.

I would rate it a nine out of 10.

A workflow and decision automation platform featuring great collaboration capabilities
Pros and Cons
  • "We can share, discuss, and develop the model together — from a distance. It's really helped us during these times of isolation."
  • "As we experienced some difficulties in the beginning, deployment took almost a month."

What is our primary use case?

We recently finished a proof of concept with Comunda, and it was successful.

Because it's a complete solution, you can start modeling to automate processes. We can also develop projects with a high degree of collaboration, which is precious for us, especially during this pandemic when we are often isolated.

Within our organization, there are roughly 20 employees using this solution.

What is most valuable?

The collaboration capabilities have proven to be a great asset during this pandemic. We can share, discuss, and develop the model together — from a distance. It's really helped us during these times of isolation.

What needs improvement?

As I mencioned, we've just finished a proof of concept, so our experience with the tool is still very recent. In general, it mets ours expectations.

Something that could be improoved is the capabilitie of integranting different modeling tools, in order to facilitate both the import and export of models.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Camunda BPM since January 2020.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

As we are still relatively new to this solution, I can't really comment on the stability; however, I know some people in the government who use this solution and they are very satisfied with the stability.

How are customer service and technical support?

We have actually never need to consult technical support, so I can't comment on them.

How was the initial setup?

I know that the IT team needed some help, fortunately, we have a good connection with them, so we worked together to set things up. In the beginning, it was kind of hard.

As we experienced some difficulties in the beginning, deployment took almost a month.

What other advice do I have?

My advice: try it because it's a great solution.

On a scale from one to ten, I would give Camunda BPM a rating of nine. If the initial setup was easier, I would give it a ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

A developer-friendly platform that enables us to measure the life cycle all relevant processes
Pros and Cons
  • "I love that Camunda is a very developer-friendly platform, and my customers have evaluated the pricing as reasonable."
  • "I think that Camunda can try to do better when it comes to solving the complexities of all the products in its software stack."

What is our primary use case?

I'm the Leader of the Center of Excellence at my company with 18 years of experience in BPM platforms, and my team works with Camunda on several different projects where we deploy Camunda either on-premises at our clients' sites or through the cloud.

Our clients that are using Camunda range from a large enterprise media company in Brazil to banks and central industry (e.g. energy industry). We have found it to be very useful in multiple segments of any enterprise. We now have about 1,000 users of Camunda in all.

What is most valuable?

I love that Camunda is a very developer-friendly platform, and my customers have evaluated the pricing as reasonable. Personally, I also like that the Camunda platform as a whole helps us to easily measure the life cycle of all the relevant processes. For example, the Camunda platform includes Cawemo for business analysts, Cockpit for process engine configuration, and modeling tools for developers. Then you have Optimize, which is helpful in managing processes and continuously improving on them.

What needs improvement?

We haven't run into many problems, because Camunda provides everything we need to delegate solutions for all the technologies (for example, Java clusters) and programming languages that we use. However, I do think that Camunda can try to do better when it comes to solving the complexities of all the products in its software stack.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Camunda for eight years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Camunda is very reliable but you need to understand the process engineer execution in order to provide solutions that are synchronized and, thus, stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's a very scalable platform in my experience.

How was the initial setup?

The Camunda installation is very simple. For example, if your project requires standalone applications, Camunda can provide the necessary external components to complete the installation. The setup can be a little more complex when compared with other applications such as JBoss, but overall it only needs a few extra configuration steps.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The evaluation of my customers on pricing is that it is reasonable.

What other advice do I have?

I feel that the Camunda engine is a very scalable platform, and compares well with many other BPM platforms that I work with.

I would rate Camunda a ten out of ten.

It is easy to install, integrates well, is stable, and scalable
Pros and Cons
  • "Camunda Platform is better than IBM BPM, and Azure. It is more elaborate."
  • "I would like to see better pricing."

What is our primary use case?

It is used in the same way that Azure and IBM BPM work.

We use the Camunda Platform for Banking services.

What is most valuable?

Camunda Platform is better than IBM BPM, and Azure. It is more elaborate.

It is divided across the platform.

The integration is separated as well as the UI, and the internal work.

It also integrates well.

What needs improvement?

I would like to see better pricing.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the Camunda Platform for a couple of months.

Camunda Platform can be deployed both on-premises and on the cloud.

We are not using the most recent version, but an internet version while the Cloud version is being developed.

We are currently using the Enterprise Edition.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The Camunda Platform is stable enough.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Camunda is a scalable solution.

We have 10 to 15 users per site.

How are customer service and support?

We have not contacted technical support.

How was the initial setup?

The installation is quite straightforward.

You log into the Camunda website and download the folder to install it directly.

The installation process took 20 to 25 minutes.

We configured the integration and the UI.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Generally, the price could be better, as well as the licensing fees.

What other advice do I have?

We have not yet explored all that Camunda Platform offers.

We would recommend this solution to others who are considering using it.

I would rate Camunda Platform a nine out of ten.

Flexible API integration, multiple database support, and cost-effective
Pros and Cons
  • "The Camunda BPMN Platform is very flexible and gives several options to deploy and scale it."
  • "In the future, I would definitely like to see the process administration (migration, audit, tracking) and process evaluation (optimize) features added to the community edition."

What is our primary use case?

We have integrated Camunda workflow and decision engine into our solution that enables management and digital sales of products – Digital Product Center. We use mainly Camunda Modeler and Camunda Cockpit. For some implementations, we also used Camunda Tasklist.

Camunda is used to model and orchestrate processes. We have developed a module where for selected process steps, the user can build forms that will be used to present or gather data by the end-user.

Another module is responsible for defining the products, with business parameters, that an end-user will be able to buy on the platform. The link between product definition and process definition is also configured.

How has it helped my organization?

This solution did improve our product significantly. We were able to focus on the development of other modules that integrate with Camunda, and together provide a powerful tool for our clients. Using such a solution gives our clients great flexibility and a short time to market for new product implementations.

Next to our product, we are also using the Camunda workflow and decision engine in other custom implementations. Our partners can benefit from open-source, as we did with our product, and thanks to that, we get more custom development contracts.

It is very important for us to have an engine that understands the model defined in the modeler, according to BPMN 2.0. This way, we can use the model for business and development purposes without extra workload. We noticed that the project team collaboration is more effective when we use a working process model.

Last but not least I can mention robust and flexible Camunda Rest API Integration, the lightweight process engine can be easily distributed as a microservice, multiple database support, pluggable architecture, and bpmn.io.

What is most valuable?

What needs improvement?

In the future, I would definitely like to see the process administration (migration, audit, tracking) and process evaluation (optimize) features added to the community edition. Right now, thanks to the pluggable architecture, we have built features that partially substitute the enterprise edition features.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Camunda Community Edition for six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We didn’t have any problems with the Camunda Community Edition on production installations. We do have experience with process instance volumes starting in hundreds a year and up to 10 million a year.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The Camunda BPMN Platform is very flexible and gives several options to deploy and scale it. Process Engine can be deployed as:

  • Embedded process engine – in your custom application (ex. Spring boot application)
  • Shared – Camunda deployed in Application Server or Servlet Container (can be a Spring boot app)
  • Standalone instance - it can be deployed as a microservice

These options give you a wide range of possibilities to scale your application. From horizontal scaling to vertical. Moreover, it can be deployed on-premises, cloud, or private cloud, including autoscaling mechanisms.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We did not use another similar solution but we did have experience with homegrown workflow engines, embedded in business applications.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward, especially with Spring Boot Camunda Starter. The configuration is in application.yml files.

What about the implementation team?

We have an in-house team for deployment and maintenance.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

There is an open-source version available, that in its core features (workflow and decision engine, modeler) is exactly the same as in the enterprise version.

My advice is to think about what is most important to your business case and choose the right version. You can always migrate to Enterprise edition.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

When we started to build Digital Product Center, we evaluated several options available at that time. We decided to use Camunda due to several reasons, but primarily due to the most valuable features mentioned above.

What other advice do I have?

We are using the community edition so it is hard to ask for extra features ;-) I fully understand that if we still want to benefit from the open-source version, there has to be a paid premium version, so that the product can be further developed.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Effective logic platform creation, reliable, and priced well
Pros and Cons
  • "The headless nature of the Camunda Platform is something that has helped us to build our own logic and platforms on it."
  • "The cockpit features of the Camunda Platform can be improved to make it a bit more user-friendly, in terms of providing a bit more user experience for non-technical users. There could be some additional documentation added."

What is our primary use case?

We have multiple B2B services running for our customers. We have approximately 120 workflows and are eventually migrating everything to the Camunda Platform. We have approximately 25 workflows on Camunda currently running.

What is most valuable?

The headless nature of the Camunda Platform is something that has helped us to build our own logic and platforms on it.

What needs improvement?

The cockpit features of the Camunda Platform can be improved to make it a bit more user-friendly, in terms of providing a bit more user experience for non-technical users. There could be some additional documentation added.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the Camunda Platform for approximately one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I would rate the stability of the Camunda Platform an eight out of ten.

There are some improvements needed.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable, it can fit any size business.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support is good. However, the agent is not in the position to understand our use case for them to report to us on time. The speed and training of the support agents could improve.

I rate the support of the Camunda Platform a seven out of ten.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have used K2 and some other workflow solutions previously.

How was the initial setup?

The initial installation was not difficult for us because we had already some experience with the solution.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price of the solution is reasonable.

What other advice do I have?

My advice is you have to be a bit optimistic and you need to see if this solution is the right fit. You have to determine if you are looking for a low-code platform or a headless platform. There is a misunderstanding between multiple products and the Camunda Platform being a headless BPMN, it is not a low-code platform.

I rate Camunda Platform an eight out of ten.
