Simple setup, integrates well, but backup compression could improve
Pros and Cons
  • "The integration of Veeam Backup Replication is very good."
  • "The parallel backup process from the Veeam server to Veeam has some limitations. The number of parallel backups should be increased and the compressional is very low. Sometimes it is half or one-third, but other backup solutions' compression levels are very high."

What is our primary use case?

We are using Veeam Backup Replication for server and virtual backups.

What is most valuable?

The integration of Veeam Backup Replication is very good.

What needs improvement?

The parallel backup process from the Veeam server to Veeam has some limitations. The number of parallel backups should be increased and the compressional is very low. Sometimes it is half or one-third, but other backup solutions' compression levels are very high.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veeam Backup Replication for approximately two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I have found Veeam Backup Replication to be stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable. However, with other systems, such as physical Linux servers, the integration with different applications is not very good and there can be some issues. Sometimes they are not fully integrated with the application.

How are customer service and support?

In my case, there is no technical support needed.

How was the initial setup?

The Veeam Backup Replication initial setup was very easy.

What about the implementation team?

I did the deployment myself.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We use the community edition of the Veeam Backup Replication and it is a software-based license. It can be a little expensive.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We did not evaluate other options.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend this solution.

I rate Veeam Backup Replication a seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Support provides solutions immediately
Pros and Cons
  • "I think that the scalability is very good. We can't compare it."
  • "I like the Acronis backup solutions on the block-based part of backups. That is a functionality that Veeam does not provide."

What needs improvement?

I like the Acronis backup solutions on the block-based part of backups. That is a functionality that Veeam does not provide.

Otherwise, I don't see any additional improvements in Veeam because they are very good. It integrates very well with Microsoft applications. Veeam is very user friendly and you don't need to have certifications to work on it.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Veeam Backup and Replication for the past four years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I think that the scalability is very good. We can't compare it. The only problem that users may face with Veeam, is if people do not size it correctly, which can cause performance issues.

Cloud backup on AWS Azure is also fantastic. It backs up applications, such as Oracle SAP, as well.

How are customer service and technical support?

The technical support is very good. They provide solutions immediately and they tell the customer exactly what is wrong.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

If you tell Veeam that you're competing with, for example, NetBackup or Backup Exec, or Dell or Micro Focus then they may lower the price. They are very competitive.

The price of Micro Focus will beat Veeam, but then you're missing one or two functionalities which is good to have for disaster recovery.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate Veeam Backup a 10 out of 10.

VM backup and ease of use are the most valuable features.

What is most valuable?

VM backup and ease of use are the most valuable features.

How has it helped my organization?

It helps the discovery of the new VM. It allows me to use the same tools when we decided to move from VMware to Hyper-V.

What needs improvement?

The physical system support needs improvement. I know that the latest version has this feature, but it was too late as I am already using it for three years. For the time being, I have used another backup software (EMC NetWorker) and they seem to catch up a lot during the past few years.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used this solution for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Stability is good so far; hopefully, we will not have any problems.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

If one day the EMC NetWorker will offer same features, then I will have to switch as they offer more than what I want.

How was the initial setup?

The setup looks simple, you set it up once and forget .

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

If they can give more add-ons (such as training) for the pricing.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We looked at EMC NetWorker and Veritas NetBackup.

What other advice do I have?

Keep it up.

The SQL table-level restore helps the customer to restore a single table instead of the entire database.

What is most valuable?

There are many features that include the SQL table-level restore, Instant VM Recovery, and SureBackup, which are valuable to us.

  • SQL table-level restore: It helps the customer to restore a single table instead of the entire database which reduces the backup window dramatically.
  • Instant VM Recovery: It helps in case of a VM crash down.
  • SureBackup: You are assured that your backup is recoverable.

How has it helped my organization?

We are a MSP and we deliver the best solutions to our customers.

Veeam was one of the key products available for the virtualized environment.

What needs improvement?

They have to expand their operations for the physical environment.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used this solution for two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

There were no stability issues. If VMware works fine, then you wont face any issues with Veeam.

How are customer service and technical support?

Since they don’t have any technical support center in India, I would like to rate it a 5 out of 10.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

As I have mentioned earlier, we are a MSP and we design solutions according to the customer's needs.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Pricing is reasonable and the product is worth investing in.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We were evaluating Arcserve for the virtual environment. However, Veaam has better adaptability towards the virtual environment.

What other advice do I have?

VMware = Veeam is the best backup and replication solution.
Microsoft Hyper-V = Veeam is the best backup and replication solution.

From what I have done scheduling is good in the new version at the Windows Agent. Also SQL and Exchange restores leverage the Veeam Explorers so you can restore a database or table even single emails.

Instant VM Recovery is valuable as it provides us with rapid recovery of failed/lost VMs with a low recovery time objective (RTO).

Valuable Features

Sure Backup is valuable because of its capability to test every backup of virtual machines. Instant VM Recovery is also valuable as it provides us with rapid recovery of failed/lost VMs with a low recovery time objective (RTO).

Improvements to My Organization

Using Veeam as a primary backup tool for the virtual environment we were able to reduce drastically the backup windows and offer better services for provisioning VMs for both the testing and development environments.

Room for Improvement

We would like the ability to backup physical servers. Most organizations still have some of their applications and services running on physical hardware and do not want to deal with multiple backup solutions.

Use of Solution

I've been using it for four years.

Deployment Issues

Main issues were related to sizing the correct infrastructure as Veeam solution needs many components (such as Proxy Servers, Repositories, WAN Accelerators, etc.) for a complete Backup & Replication solution. For medium/large environments, initial configuration may take some time.

Stability Issues

We have had no issues with the performance.

Scalability Issues

It's been able to scale for our needs.

Customer Service and Technical Support

I've not yet had to use their tech support.

Initial Setup

Veeam is very easy to setup. The installation is wizard-driven and will install any dependencies you might be missing.

Implementation Team

We did it in-house after receiving training from the vendor. In case your company does not have sufficient technical resources, the best option is to contract Professional Services from Veeam Partners.

Pricing, Setup Cost and Licensing

The price is very attractive and probably the lowest on the market for an enterprise backup tool.

Other Solutions Considered

For only virtual backups I have evaluated TSM and CommVault. Veeam is by far the solution that delivers a complete set of features for a small price. And the administration is much more easy.

Other Advice

Do a PoC and compare cost x benefits with other solutions.

I love the ability to either restore the entire VM or just a single file if needed, it saved us a lot of pain and money.

What is most valuable?

There is no one feature that is most important. I love the ability to either restore the entire VM or just a single file if needed. We have had to restore VMs both ways and it saved us a lot of pain and money. The speed of the restore jobs was extremely quick as well.

How has it helped my organization?

It has given us the ability to restore our systems very, very quickly. The backups run very quickly as well, which helps us free up bandwidth on our network.

What needs improvement?

They still don’t have a plugin for use with EMC Data Domain. All else is fantastic.

We have been using Veeam Backup and Replication for about 3 years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

No problems with deployment.

Customer Service:

The customer service is excellent!

Technical Support:

Technical support is fantastic. Not only do they understand the product very well, but they also help the end user to understand how to troubleshoot the issue as well. They are also really friendly and kind.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Yes. Initially, we used Norton’s Backup Exec. We switched primarily because we were virtualizing our entire infrastructure

How was the initial setup?

It was pretty straightforward in my book. I thought it was very user-friendly. The documentation is very good as well.

What about the implementation team?

We did the entire implementation in-house.

What other advice do I have?

Check to see if they have a plug-in for your storage vendor.
