Windows 10 Pricing

AshishDubey - PeerSpot reviewer
Product manager at Tata Communications Ltd

Windows 10 has a good subscription. But, Microsoft should work on making the OS more affordable to compete with other operating systems like Linux, which is known for its security and is used on many servers. They could also add new features and support more applications.

The licensing is yearly. I think the license is only available on a yearly basis. It would be nice if they offered some one-time license options where you could procure it for a lifetime.

It's not expensive or cheap, but it's in a mediocre range. They could make it a little bit cheaper.

I'm not sure about how much it's priced in the consumer world, but within enterprise it comes with a Microsoft 365 license, which is very easy. It has become an easier commercial model. Microsoft licensing was always a great pain for every enterprise customer because it was so complicated. It was so complex to understand and comprehend that in any large deal we had to give a call to our licensing officer from Microsoft, and only they could solve those complexities. Now we can at least take some of the rudimentary decisions and some of the basic calculations. From a pricing standpoint, it's well priced. I guess it's not a lot to ask for, especially when it comes along with a package for the solution. It's quite competitive.

Microsoft's licensing strategy is constantly changing. In a few years, we might only be using cloud versions for the Microsoft operating system. That's my prediction. So I'm not expecting a general improvement on that. For example, I know the average price of a standard operating system for home use, but I see the enterprise version much more expensive than the version for home users. I'm usually buying products for private use based on my company's different price preferences. So I have no billing platform included in the device. I'm not buying hardware and software separately. I'm always buying this combined version that includes the hardware and software.

Get a KMS server and a volume license if you are a medium sized business. Being able to wipe and re-image is crucial for long term stability of your fleet. Having a Multiple Activation Key (MAK) makes it so every new activation counts against your total.

I would not say it's expensive. It has an extensive range of options. If you're just looking at the OS perspective, there is no comparison.

You don't know how much does a macOS costs you, as it comes with the hardware. I would say that, with the performance that Windows delivers, it's not justifiable that Windows is charging the money they do. That said, I would say that it is not expensive.

Some of the issues we're having are when your company wants a license or when we don't know if that license can be merged. In this regard, Microsoft is very rigid and unforgiving.
