We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The nice thing about Spiceworks is always it's free. Monitoring of printers for low toner. Finding machines that have low memory or low hard disk space.""Helpdesk and inventory are both equally valuable, and they form the true core of the product.""Tickets by e-mail, with actions by hastag.""The solution can find all asset details automatically, whether it's a Mac address, computer name, IP address, models, etc. It's very helpful.""It was easy to integrate Spiceworks with our existing setup.""The solution is very stable. It's reliable and efficient.""It's easy to understand.""If you're in the market for a low-cost service desk system, Spiceworks is a good software solution to start out with, especially when it comes to startups and those organizations that don't currently have any existing service desk software in place."

More Spiceworks Pros →

"We no longer have to manually search for problems because we are alerted when something in the network goes down.""The solution effectively monitors network devices and servers.""This is a good, stable network monitoring solution for devices.""Auto scanning is most valuable. It looks for rogue devices on your network.""The interface in the last few years it has been a lot greater, they are much more user-friendly. I like the interface.""The product is reasonably priced.""The threshold alerting is the most valuable feature.""It is easy to access and discover devices, as well as monitor them automatically. The topology discover is also a useful feature."

More WhatsUp Gold Pros →

"The most valuable feature is network traffic monitoring.""I really enjoy network traffic triggers that allow us to check traffic threshold from ISP.""Our customers also like that they don't have to use multiple modules. Micro Focus and major vendors typically require you to buy several modules and plugins. Our customers do not like that. We offer them a single product for all their monitoring needs.""We detect problems before the customer does and before it actually happens using the predictive functions in Zabbix.""The features I found most valuable are the user interface and a wide range of network devices that are easy to configure.""The most valuable feature is the alert and alarm monitoring.""The integration capabilities and APIs are the best part.""Every new asset placed in the environment can be automatically detected, predicting human failures."

Cons
"Since Spiceworks is a free tool, it's not very scriptable or customizable.""There are a lot of disadvantages to Spiceworks because it's not an agent-based solution.""I would like to see more information when drilling down into access permissions, assignments management, or tagging. When I click a note or a device, I should be able to see more details about the router and modem. For example, I want to see the version, downtime, availability, latency, etc. I should have easy access to everything about our assets at a glance.""Sometimes, it can be difficult to integrate what you need.""Once a device was recognized on the network, Spiceworks never got rid of it even after you took it off the network. You had to go in and manually remove it.""The GUI must be improved.""The network mapping could be improved. Putting together an actual bonafide network map would be really nice.""One of the biggest ways in which Spiceworks could improve is by developing better and more automated workflows. For example, in another solution called ServiceDesk by ManageEngine, you can have levels of approval in the event that there is a request for new software, or when someone requests a VPN or WiFi connection. This kind of multi-stage approval feature provided by ServiceDesk does not appear to exist in Spiceworks, and it is one of their main shortcomings for me."

More Spiceworks Cons →

"Importing the maps and being able to customize them could be easier.""The technical support does not bother to respond.""Integrations with other devices. I want to have a product that has full integration with my active directory so I can track user activity. I want to track my complete user activity, so I'm looking for a product to implement in the near future, which will have full integration with my network and active directory users. It became very difficult to track user activity.""I think there are a few bugs now. Although they give some resolution for this, we cannot share the network remotely because of our company policy.""I would like to see them do an enhancement to the application monitoring. A lot of other products do better application monitoring so they should do some improvements to the application monitoring.""The new release cadence needs to be improved. It takes a while for them to add new features and functionality. There should be a quicker turnaround with new versions.""Pricing is too high relative to how many devices we use. The price list is not linear to number of devices.""Users want SMS available via Whatsapp Gold. They don't want to go through third party SMS servers. The solution should work to make this possible."

More WhatsUp Gold Cons →

"The networking monitor is not too easy to work with.""For us, the initial setup was complex""Zabbix is powerful, but it is difficult to understand initially. There are many things that can be improved, but we might not be using Zabbix to its fullest extent. The software has more features than we need.""There are not too much documentation or manuals. We found the tutorials very easy to understand but do not go deep enough in the use of Zabbix. We need more manuals, proper use, documentation, etc.""It would be helpful if they translated the documentation to Cyrillic languages.""The performance reporting could be improved.""The GUI could be more intuitive. Also, we'd like streaming telemetry. Zabbix might have this feature, but I haven't seen it yet. It took us a long time to get started because the documentation isn't very descriptive. We had to go through various sources like YouTube and forums to get this solution working.""Having a more customizable interface and dashboard would be an improvement."

I have researched a quite a few network monitoring tools which can be used for various monitoring purposes of not only the servers, but the intermediate routers as well. There are majorly three types of these softwares. Ones which are completely open-source, you can do almost anything you want using these, but they require quite some expertise before you can use them. Then there are the ones that are not open source, the enterprise softwares and cost you some money, but on the other hand, they are extremely easy to set-up and learn. You can have them up and running in a matter of minutes. And then there are those which are completely cloud based. They can be free of cost or charge some money depending on the software. The good thing about these is that you don’t have to install any extra software, and it can be managed completely online but then again these have limited features and you cannot exploit them to the full extent as you can do with the open-source and to some extent the enterprise software, so I won’t suggest you to use these, because these are generally not the complete solutions and require other support software to achieve the same. Below I have listed the outstanding pros and cons of the various Network analyzers that you can look into Nagios Pros: Nagios offers an extensive set of collector plug-ins that allows users to gather performance and availability data from a broad range of operating systems, including  Windows and Netware Nagios… Read more →
