MikroTik Routers and Switches Primary Use Case

Akram Zaki Hussein - PeerSpot reviewer

In our CCTV system, we have two types of cameras: analog and IP. For the IP cameras, we utilize switches with PoE. This feature eliminates the need for a separate power cable, as the camera receives both power and data through a single Ethernet cable. We have found that MicroTik switches work seamlessly with these cameras, providing reliable operation without any issues.

Even a MikroTik switch can be made to be a router. And even a router, you can convert it into a switch. It depends on your configuration and the way you set it. If you want it to be a switch, it'll be a switch. If you want it to work as a router, it will work as a router. This is not like Cisco, for example, where a router cannot be a switch.

We use MikroTik routers for routing, mainly for the connection between our branches and the head office factory.

The process is for microservices, and we use it to differentiate between the Internet lines, like one for LAN, from our LAN to branches LAN, and factory LAN. Actually, we use the MAM (Metropolitan Area Networks) by MikroTik reseller.  We use the GRE and IPSEC protocols with our MikroTik routers.

The solution is used for site-to-site VPN, and it can also be used as a router as a CPE. So, we normally give them the solution so that their NetLog and everything can be captured in the server because, ultimately, it is a requirement of the Department of Telecommunication in our country. For all the leased line users, we are supposed to keep the NetLog. MikroTik is mainly used by some SMEs, and more specifically, it is for SME clients only.

Depending on the specific requirements, I utilize MikroTik Routers and Switches to configure IPSec connections between two sites, where one serves as a backup and the other as the production site. Additionally, I employ them as an internal VPN server for external users. These devices are also used for routing and firewall purposes, and I take advantage of various other features, such as redirection, blocking, and more.

We had been using MikroTik as a firewall to implement firewall policies and to implement queues along with DNS and DStv services. Additionally, we were using MikroTik to control our end users by limiting their website browsing and the limiting their upload and download speed. The aim was also to prevent them from indulging in any unauthorized access to the internet.

We primarily use MikroTik routers and switches for LTE solutions. It's 3G, 4G, and gravitating to 5G solutions and we do a lot of data center type of solutions with the heavy-duty cloud core routers. We also do premises type of solutions with a lot of their switches.

As far as which version we're using, the products are fairly standardized—what changes is the version of the operating system. We try and use the latest long-term versions of the operating system, but we use a wide variety of their products.

This solution is deployed on-prem. We use the whole rack of MikroTik switches and routers.

We use MikroTik both in our company and clients. Even extended to our household clients. MikroTik devices offer you similar features you'll normally get from high priced devices like Cisco and HP, however at a fraction of the costs. This works very nicely with us since our clients are mainly small and medium. The device price doesn't dictate whether the client gets a solution.

VLANs, L3 Routing, Load Balancing, HotSpot are amongst some of the features we normally use in many of our deployments.
