It's fairly simple to get used to. Also, the cross platform experience between the web version, mobile and desktop apps is impressively smooth.

What is most valuable?

Having group chats and one-on-one chats in one place makes Slack conventient. It's fairly simple to get used to. Also, the cross platform experience between mobile app, desktop app, and web version is impressively smooth.

How has it helped my organization?

More often than not, members of our team are on the go rather than in the office. With Slack we have increased communication between teams which has improved executions of complex interdepartmental procedures.

What needs improvement?

There is some lag at times. Also, would prefer video chat functionality built in rather than as an add-on.

For how long have I used the solution?

Two years.

The most valuable features are the ability to communicate instantly and create channels. I want to notify users of messages that need immediate attention.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features are the ability to communicate instantly and create channels. I can create a channel called #breakfastdiscussion, invite three people on my team, and we can chat over breakfast. I can also make a channel called #teamtalk and all the team can be invited. This is a great feature.

How has it helped my organization?

We can group conversations around different issues. The issues are entirely created by us, in-house. It works well for a small team with opt-in members.

What needs improvement?

I would like to be able to notify users that they have messages that need their immediate attention. If Slack picked up more features of Asana, such as ticketing and calendars and assignments, I would give it a rating of 5/5.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Slack for a year and a half.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have not had any stability issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have not had scalability issues.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is excellent.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We did not have any previous solutions.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is free for us.

What other advice do I have?

It is essential for small team communication.

We use Slack for internal communication between cross-functional teams.

What is most valuable?

I like the tool's ability to send voice mail. We can also search for conversations easily in Slack.

I appreciate the ability to create multiple private or open channels.

What is most valuable?

I appreciate the ability to create multiple private or open channels.

How has it helped my organization?

  • The ability to create ad hoc channels for certain projects has made us more effective.
  • The mobile app allows us to communicate on the go, which saves time as well.
  • Onboarding new users is easy thanks to Slack's great UI.

What needs improvement?

There seems to be several minutes of delay between getting notifications on the Mac OS app and then receiving them on the iPhone app.

For how long have I used the solution?

I’ve been using Slack for over a year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We haven't really had any stability issues.

How are customer service and technical support?

The product works very well. I haven't personally had the need to contact Slack's support. I did have a question about using Slack several months ago which I posted on Twitter. Their Twitter support team was very responsive and helpful.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used Skype before Slack. We switched because Slack offered:

  • The ability to create multiple channels
  • A more user friendly interface
  • The ability to keep us more organized and effective

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I would recommend considering staying on the free version. It does limit you in terms of the history of communication and storage, but I think that these problems can be worth overcoming. This is the case especially if you are a smaller team or a startup that needs to watch where you spend your dollars.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We decided to just test Slack out first with no intentions to switch from Skype. However, the whole team fell in love with the product. At this current moment, we are experimenting with Workplace though.

What other advice do I have?

Once you sign up, try keeping things clean by creating multiple channels. This will ensure that individual conversations are relevant and that the team does not get distracted by unnecessary chatter.

Provides integration between devices, effective organization of shared content, and syntax highlighting.

What is most valuable?

  • Seamless integration between devices
  • Effective organization of shared content (documents, images, etc.) keeps team on same page
  • Syntax highlighting
  • Nice overall UX

How has it helped my organization?

Slack kept several remote employees working cohesively and seamlessly together, allowing us to more easily synchronize our efforts and work collaboratively rather than "islands unto ourselves," so to speak. Coding, writing, editing, etc. was all done in an effective manner, as a result.

What needs improvement?

Honestly, I feel like I am nitpicking when I say the UX can be improved. But it is true, incrementally, the UX could see an improvement through extensive tweaking and testing.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used it for three years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

We have not encountered any deployment issues; it was very smooth.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Slack has proved to be the most stable communication tool I have used, to date.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have not encountered any scalability issues; large teams seem to be handled quite well.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I previously used HipChat. The decision was not mine to switch, but I found the switch to be a very positive one. Slack was just more slick, especially with sharing content and keeping a history of it, visible to conversation participants as needed.

You have different channels where you can set topics
Pros and Cons
  • "It has definitively made an improvement on our productivity. Information does not got lost in hundreds of less important messages."
  • "Its integration with different apps is a great feature."
  • "Notifications are not as good as they could be (especially for mobile)."
  • "Slack could add additional and better integrations."

What is our primary use case?

The idea of using Slack was to keep non-business related talks from business talks. In Slack, you have different channels where you can set topics, therefore people will not divagate on a specific subject.

How has it helped my organization?

It has definitively made an improvement on our productivity. Information does not got lost in hundreds of less important messages. If you want something about a specific topic, you just go to that channel, scroll a bit, and eventually you will find it.

What is most valuable?

Its integration with different apps is a great feature. Also, for a deconstructed environment, bots, GIFs and customizable emojis are a great fun for the IT team!

What needs improvement?

Slack could add additional and better integrations. There is a lot of room for improvement here.

Also, notifications are not as good as they could be (especially for mobile).

For how long have I used the solution?

One to three years.

The ability to create separate channels is valuable.

What is most valuable?

The ability to create separate channels is valuable.

How has it helped my organization?

For projects, it's improved how we share files. The Google Drive extension means that files can be housed right inside of Slack. We can focus on work without distractions.

What needs improvement?

Microsoft and Google are creating competitive equivalents. Slack needs to find a "secret sauce" that can differentiate them further.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used Slack on and off for the past few years. I use it with some side projects.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have not had any stability issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have not had any scalability issues.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We did not have a previous solution.

How was the initial setup?

The initial installation was not at all complex. It was very WYSIWYG.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I use the free version.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We did not evaluate any alternatives.

What other advice do I have?

It comes right out of the box. Start exploring!
