BitLooker makes you exclude deleted file blocks, swap and hibernation files, and user files or folders.

What is most valuable?

BitLooker: It is an advanced technology designed to reduce backup size. It makes you exclude deleted file blocks, swap and hibernation files, and user files or folders.

How has it helped my organization?

Based on my previous experience with different backup products, Veeam is the best one that understands and integrates easily with virtual infrastructure.

What needs improvement?

Add new features on application backup and recovery. And expand the range of applications supported.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used it for about two years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

There was some incompatibility with Windows drivers, but it was fixed by the support team.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support is excellent. I had three cases and they all were solved perfectly. The support team is highly qualified.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I worked with Symantec NetBackup/Commvault and EMC NetWorker. Veeam is the best for virtualization backup.

How was the initial setup?

Initial setup was straightforward and the steps were so simple.

What was our ROI?

My ROI is 50%.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Pricing/licensing is fair enough. Licensing for this software is per CPU socket.

What other advice do I have?

Consider it if you are running a totally virtualized infrastructure. And try to focus on Veeam as the single reporting tool. It is just very useful and easy.

Features I like include Integrated WAN Acceleration, Instant VM Recovery and SureBackup.

Valuable Features

  • CBT technology
  • Instant VM Recovery
  • Recovery Explorer for Exchange, AD, Oracle
  • SureBackup
  • Integrated WAN Acceleration

Improvements to My Organization

Veeam improved our backup infrastructure to help save backup space. With the integrated WAN acceleration, the data transfer of our backup files to cloud storage sped up.

Instant VM Recovery provides very fast recovery of our critical VMs.

Room for Improvement

I think it would be great to have the ability to use WAN acceleration as an integrated feature for local backup storage to save a lot more space.

Use of Solution

I have used this solution for about five years.

Deployment Issues

I have not yet encountered any deployment or stability or scalability issues. If the backup doesn’t work, the issue is not with Veeam but rather with the VM.

Customer Service and Technical Support

Customer Service:

Customer service works very well.

Technical Support:

Technical support also works very well.

Implementation Team

I implemented it by myself. My advice for implementation is to install Veeam on a dedicated backup server. It is important to plan a backup strategy like 3-2-1: 3 copies on 2 different medias and 1 offsite.

Pricing, Setup Cost and Licensing

It is important to count all the sockets of vm-hosts to get the right license.

Other Solutions Considered

We also use Altaro Backup for some small customers. Altaro also works great for its price.

Other Advice

Try it and love it.

Like your review. I can't wait for 9.5 with the physical server agent and Nimble Snapshot integration. Going to get even better.

We can now perform restores as file level instead of the whole VM.

What is most valuable?

The ease of use of the product and overall confidence in the product and Veeam support are valuable.

How has it helped my organization?

We can now perform restores as file level instead of the whole VM.

What needs improvement?

A better reporting function where we can see all the job statistics as standard rather than buying this feature with Veeam One.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using it for six to eight months.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

We have had no issues with the deployment.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Using Synthetic Full Backup caused issues with storage, but since switching to True Full Backup everything seams to be fine.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's been able to scale for our needs.

How are customer service and technical support?

It's 10/10.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used an in house script, which did not address a file level restore.

How was the initial setup?

It was fine, but the current setup process could do with some tweaking. It would be nice to have more advice on domain controller restores.

What about the implementation team?

We performed it in-house.

What other advice do I have?

Try it first and see if it does what you want.

After we started using it, we transferred all our 30 virtual servers in seven hours. They should support physical server backups, though I believe v9 will do this.

Valuable Features:

  • The ability to perform de-duplication is the most valuable feature for me.
  • It also performs SQL backups so that I can restore SQL database table bases.
  • Replication time very good. For example, I can replicate 4TB data to the DR side in 5 hours with a 10 Mbps data line everyday.
  • Replica server tests on the DR side are very easy because I just need to power on the server on from there.

Improvements to My Organization:

After we started using Veeam, we transferred all our 30 virtual servers in seven hours to our disaster recovery side.

Also, during our disaster recovery test w,e did not have any issues replicating servers.

Room for Improvement:

It should support physical servers, and as far as I know, v9 will do this.

Deployment Issues:

We had no issues deploying it.

Stability Issues:

It's been very stable.

Scalability Issues:

We can scale as needed.

Initial Setup:

I wasn't involved in the initial setup, but I haven't heard that it wasn't anything by straightforward.

Other Advice:

I would advise you to get it because some of the features are free.

Veeam is a great product as we use it and I am looking forward to V9 for the enhancements. I don't think natively it will back up physical servers and you still need the Endpoint product for this but can use a Veeam server repository.

It's a great product that has helped us replicate a very old database run on VM.

What is most valuable?

Its backup capabilities and also day to day replication.

How has it helped my organization?

We wanted to replicate a very old database which is running on VM. We were looking for solution long time and finally using this product we are able to do it.

What needs improvement?

I think it's fantastic, so none.

For how long have I used the solution?

2 years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

No issues with deployment.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No issues with stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No issues with scalability.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

5 out of 5.

Technical Support:

5 out of 5.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

No, this was our first.

How was the initial setup?

Very straightforward.

What about the implementation team?

In-house.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Yes, we evaluated SRM.

Like I previously mentioned, we are using a very old database and even that database company didn't provide support. I tried to replicate it over WAN, and now by using Veeam, it works great. It was running on my regional site which had standalone VM with local storage and that's why Veeam worked fine compare to SRM.

It has made the VM infrastructure easier to manage, as well as simplifying the backup and restore process.

Valuable Features

The product is really easy to use.

Improvements to My Organization

It has made the VM infrastructure easier to manage, as well as simplifying the backup and restore process.

Room for Improvement

The tape management is not really efficient and some other products are better. I know that backup on tape is not the the main target of Veeam but, it's important.

Use of Solution

I've used it for two years.

Deployment Issues

Nothing serious.

Stability Issues

Sometimes, the memory is not big enough, and I would guess that a leak might be present. Performing a monthly reboot solve this (at the same time as Windows updates).

Scalability Issues

No issues encountered.

Customer Service and Technical Support

Customer Service:

It's good.

Technical Support:

It's poor for certain issues (with the Veeam One product, the guys did not talk together and asked the same question several times). We had a loss of production time, and the answers they gave were not efficient.

Initial Setup

It was simple and fast.

Implementation Team

I implemented it myself.

Other Solutions Considered

I also looked at Avamar, Symanted and TSM which are better for tape management and data retention management, but expensive. Veeam however, is the easiest way to manage virtual infrastructure backup, and the cost is better, when compared with some other solutions.

Other Advice

Evaluate your needs before choosing a product. If tape management is required only, then Veeam is not the choice.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

Nothing major encountered.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No issues encountered.

It's the best I've encountered.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously used virtual server infrastructure backup solution.

How was the initial setup?

It was simple and straightforward.

Good product but it's not suitable for a virtual environment.

What is most valuable?

Exchange and File server backup are valuable features.

How has it helped my organization?

Versions of backup files helped us to recover files as per users requirement.

What needs improvement?

Virtual Environment

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used it for seven years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

No, but deployment is bit complicated.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Having issues with the hardware.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Tape base backup and data is spread across the tapes.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

2/10.

Technical Support:

2/10.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously used the Windows backup solution and we changed to Tivoli for automated backups and multiple copies of backup sets to comply with central bank policy to keep the backup data offsite and out of the country.

How was the initial setup?

Initial set up was bit complicated. Policy definition is not easy.

What about the implementation team?

We used a vendor team whose expertise was 2/10.

What was our ROI?

It's not 100%.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

No. We did not do an evaluation.

What other advice do I have?

Good product but not it's suitable for a virtual environment.
