Valuable for its internal recovery and flexibility
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature is the internal recovery."
  • "In the next release, I would like replication directly to the cloud to be included."

What is our primary use case?

My primary use case is as a physical environment for cloud protection in different public clouds.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is the internal recovery.

What needs improvement?

In the next release, I would like replication directly to the cloud to be included.

I have been using this solution for about four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This product is very, very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Easy to use, and very stable but needs the automatically check for backups
Pros and Cons
  • "The product is very simple in its design. We don't need it to perform complicated tasks."
  • "It needs to offer an automatic check for backups."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use it for backup and replication.

What is most valuable?

It's a very easy solution to use. It's easy for IT teams to manage, however, you don't need any special skills to really wrap your head around the product.

The product is very simple in its design. We don't need it to perform complicated tasks.

We work with the standard version, which is free.

What needs improvement?

It would be helpful if there was something that could assist you in managing the database more effectively.

It needs to offer an automatic check for backups.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is very stable. We don't have any issues with its reliability. It's bug and glitch-free for the most part. It doesn't crash or freeze.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We've never really tested the scalability of the product. It's my understanding that you can extend service to ten or maybe to 20 machines. It's not complicated to do that. However, I can't speak to its full potential as it relates to scalability.

We only have four people dealing with the product directly in our company.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is okay. We're satisfied with the level of service we're provided.

How was the initial setup?

The initial implementation is not complex in any way. It's very straightforward.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

While we work with the standard version of the solution, if you want to upgrade, the pricing is too high. They could work to make it more affordable for the Polish market. It's too high for most companies to afford. If it was more affordable, it could be more accessible.

What other advice do I have?

We're just a customer. We don't have a business relationship with Veeam.

We're using the standard version of the solution.

While I'd advise others to look at other companies to compare, I do recommend Veeam. It's my understanding that 60% of IT companies use Veeam. It's very popular.

Overall, I'd rate the solution six out of ten if I were to compare it to other versions of Veeam products. It's an okay solution. If it had an automatic check for backups, I'd rate it much higher.

Rotating HDDs for offline backups use case

What is our primary use case?

Protection of virtual workloads.

What is most valuable?

  • Rotating HDDs for offline backups use case
  • Instant VM recovery with vPower NFS and SureBackup, also known as Recovery Assurance by other vendors.

What needs improvement?

  • Relying on open source infrastructure for Veeam's architectural components instead of Microsoft for OS and DB.
  • Support for containers, and agent-less KVM backups, and Citrix environments.

It is integrated with HPE storage solutions and it supports VM recovery.

What is most valuable?

It’s very simple to implement and use. It is agentless. It is integrated with HPE storage solutions (SAN and a deduplicated repository) and it supports instant VM recovery.

How has it helped my organization?

We have significantly improved the restore process of single items, like an Exchange Mailbox with a very simple wizard-driven process.

What needs improvement?

It requires a Windows Server, but it would be a good idea to have an appliance with no Microsoft license required. As of now, there’s no chance to backup NAS shares (CIFS/NFS).

For how long have I used the solution?

I have known and used Veeam Backup and Replication from v6 in 2011.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

There were no stability issues in my experience.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

There were some issues with repository scalability in legacy versions.

How are customer service and technical support?

The technical support team is professional and competent. I would give technical support a rating of 9/10.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used Symantec Backup Exec and CA Arcserve. We changed because there was a lack of features specific for a virtualization environment. Arcserve has a complex way to backup Exchange.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price is adequate for the quality of the product. There are several editions/licenses that start from basic functionality (Standard Edition) to the edition that includes maximum integration (Enterprise Plus). I would recommend considering at least the Enterprise Edition.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We try to use both Symantec Backup Exec and CA Arcserve.

What other advice do I have?

Only consider the Availability Suite if you need to monitor your virtual environment within backup processes and you have nothing implemented on it.

Nice review. An appliance would be awesome but not sure if that is a direction they will go. Version 10 which was announced at VeeamON listed NAS backups as a new feature as I was there.

It is simple to install, configure and manage.

Valuable Features:

The fact that it comes with backup and replication is a must. The integration with EMC Data Domain and similar products is also a very good feature. The same can be said about the backups from storage snapshots.

Improvements to My Organization:

We use Veeam with EMC Data Domain. This allowed us to simplify our backup processes and enable us to have faster and more streamlined backup jobs. It's also easier to manage than our previous solution with huge space savings. Since Veeam also allows us to replicate machines we use that feature in a way that provide us more flexibility when we need to test some updates or changes without risking our production environment.

Room for Improvement:

The downside is when you need to backup physical servers as usually most organizations aren't running a 100% virtualized environment so that can be an issue. Another issue is when clients have file level data on storage and need or want to backup using NDMP as I believe that this isn't supported yet.

Deployment Issues:

We had no issues deploying it.

Stability Issues:

There have been no performance issues.

Scalability Issues:

It's been able to scale for our needs.

Initial Setup:

It's simple to install and configure.

Other Advice:

If most, or all, of your environment is based on virtual machines and you want something that is simple to install, configure and manage but above all else, something that backups and restores your data successfully then Veeam is your product.

We're able to backup our VMs quickly and without downtime.

Valuable Features

The speed of performing backups and restores. It's super fast.

Improvements to My Organization

We looked for the best solution to get backups of our VM without downtime, and I found this was the best solution. We highly recommend it for virtual servers.

Room for Improvement

It could be so nice and useful if Veeam had a feature to enable backup of physical servers, especially physical Linux servers. This image-based backup would be an improvement.

Use of Solution

I've been using it for three years.

Deployment Issues

Some little issues with logs which were fixed after updates.

Stability Issues

No issues encountered yet.

Scalability Issues

No issues encountered.

Customer Service and Technical Support

Customer Service:

10/10.

Technical Support:

10/10.

Initial Setup

It was very easy.

Implementation Team

I rolled out this service to a meteorology organization.

Other Solutions Considered

I tried Symantec system recovery, but Veeam is really faster and user friendly.

Other Advice

This is the number one product for backups and restorations of VMs in an enterprise environment.
