Fortinet FortiAnalyzer Initial Setup

Kiarash Heydari - PeerSpot reviewer
Information security manager at asa com

The initial setup is complex.

Setting up and launching a network, depending on the size can take anywhere from one or two days up to a week or more. However, in order for the network to run smoothly and be effective, it is important to continually tune and optimize that network. This is not a solution that can be set and forgotten; we need to be constantly adjusting Fortinet FortiAnalyzer to meet the needs of our network and the services we are providing.

The initial setup process was quite good because the solution was user-friendly, and anyone could access and track the solution. Even though I rate this solution an initial setup somewhere between seven to eight out of ten, to be more specific, I rate it an eight. Also, in our company, we have deployed the solution on the cloud.

The initial setup of Fortinet FortiAnalyzer is straightforward. The process does not take more than 15 minutes.

The critical step is the virtual machine (VM) startup, which is dependent on the virtualization aspect, not the FortiAnalyzer itself. It took me no more than 10 minutes to complete this process when I was utilizing a high-performance hyper-converged infrastructure. Currently, deploying a VM with one terabyte should take less than 60 seconds.

We don't need to do much to install FortiAnalyzer because it always depends on FortiGate. You need to deploy FortiGate before you install it. That's why I say that I see it as a dummy box. I don't see anything interesting in it. It's only a support structure.

The initial setup is straightforward. The deployment took a couple of days.

For the deployment, we needed to create the server for deploying the FortiAnalyzer image and create the policy rules. We also had to complete the basic configuration of FortiAnalyzer. Following that, we configured all the resources and logs within FortiAnalyzer to collect and correlate the logs, which are then used to generate reports.

Setting up FortiAnalyzer is a bit complex for a beginner because you have a shallow understanding of what it is. Configuring the advanced features is somewhat challenging, but the basic setup isn't that tough.

Setting up FortiAnalyzer takes around five to 10 minutes. I rate my setup experience 10 out of 10. After deployment, there isn't too much maintenance. It's just the usual updates. That's it.

The initial deployment of Fortinet FortiAnalyzer is straightforward. There are two network interfaces involved: the Internet interface and the LAN interface. The LAN interface must be configured on the same subnet as the other Fortinet products to enable visibility of the network connector from the Fortinet console. Upon successful configuration, an authorization message will be received, allowing us to proceed with adding the devices to the FortiAnalyzer device manager and initiating log data collection. The deployment process is well-documented, requiring minimal personnel, and can be completed within five hours.

The initial setup is straightforward. We can choose to install either a single node or a cluster. We run it in a virtual environment on firmware, and the process of installing the RPA takes around 15 minutes. Afterward, some configuration is required, including the installation of certificates and similar tasks. Thus, the entire process usually takes approximately one to two hours.

Once the installation is complete, we need to connect all the FortiGate Firewalls to the FortiAnalyzer. This step also involves configuring them securely. When I deploy this solution for a customer, it typically takes me about four to eight hours to complete the installation and configuration.

I can say that the setup is a mixture of both options. I wouldn't say it is difficult. I would rather say that the setup process is okay or moderate. Also, the straightforwardness and complexity of the setup process will depend on your environment.

The deployment of Fortinet FortiAnalyzer is not complex, but integrating it with firewalls can take some time, depending on the number of firewalls. So, the deployment of the entire solution can take approximately one week to complete.
