Sophos Cyberoam UTM Initial Setup

Diptendu Ghosh - PeerSpot reviewer
Group CIO at Doshi

Sophos Cyberoam UTM is simple to deploy except for the VPN. The deployment time depends on the company's size, the number of branches, and whether the license and other prerequisites are in place. It can take as little as 20-30 minutes or up to an hour. Configuration is not typically critical; everything can be done immediately if all the necessary information is available.

I rate the initial setup an eight out of ten, where one is difficult and ten is easy.

I found the initial setup for Sophos Cyberoam UTM straightforward.

Deploying the product takes one to two days, and it's ready for work. Sophos Cyberoam UTM is a straightforward appliance. It's not complicated. If you have the knowledge in configuring or designing the network and the basics of the file log, you can launch Sophos Cyberoam UTM and run it for your network in one or two days.

I rate the initial setup a seven out of ten. We have previous experience using it, so we knew exactly what we wanted to do and what features would be useful, so we set up the solution in one week. When someone doesn't have this knowledge, the initial setup would be harder for them. In that case, they have to use the service of an expert.

If we have a proper discussion with the client and the network mapping is perfectly done, we can deploy the solution in one to two days. It will take longer if that kind of information or a basic study is unavailable. You will need to set up the DMZ or work with the client to make it more secure in terms of the firewall and user rights. As a part of our offering, we first do a detailed study so that we can set it up in a day or two.

Any time you're setting it up, you will need downtime, and not all the clients today use high-availability parts or have a redundant firewall in place, so you don't know how the setup will go.

The initial setup is very easy because the GUI is easy for me to use.

Deployment is very easy, we just have to connect to the ISP we have, set the support load balancing, and then we just have to connect to our core switches. Then we have to distribute it to any of the other users. The deployment can be done solo because there is a setup wizard. We can configure the settings and then put a static IP address through the ISP, but it's very easy.

The initial setup is very simple and straightforward. It is not overly complex. The configuration process is very easy.

We do get setup support and training, which makes the process very simple.

Our appliance is on-premises. However, there is a cloud-based console that connects to the physical device.

The product has its own deployment support that comes with it. If you are a new client, technical support will assist with the setup.

The setup itself is pretty fast. It doesn't take more than one hour. Of course, there is a few tweaks that may take a week or two to set up. Some companies may need additional services configured.

The initial setup was straightforward. The deployment was primarily conducted to assess the organization's requirements and objectives. Initially, our main goal in selecting this device was to have control over our internet usage. We performed a user acceptance test, created various use cases, and evaluated what capabilities Sophos Cyberoam could offer. Once we were satisfied with the results, we proceeded with the deployment.

Our initial actions involved configuring the system settings and determining which websites users should access and when. For instance, during work hours from 8 AM to 4 PM, we restricted access to social media sites and YouTube. This helped us optimize internet speed. The first steps included registering the device and configuring its basic settings. Over time, we continued to implement and refine policies based on the evolving needs of the network.

The deployment took approximately two or three days. Initially, the vendor encountered challenges, possibly due to a skill gap. Subsequently, an expert from Lagos had to intervene and complete the deployment. This extended the deployment timeframe to about three days. Maintenance involves renewing our license and conducting firmware updates. Whenever a new release for the device is available, we ensure to apply it. These routine tasks constitute the core of our maintenance activities.

We have found the initial installation process to be straightforward and easy. It's not overly complex or difficult. A company should be able to manage it rather easily.

If you connect it then you can adjust the web page and the IP and you can make a batch configuration. Then you can simply connect to the tower. It's not hard.

The deployment maybe took three or so hours. It wasn't a long amount of time. That includes handling all of the configurations as well.

We have five members that make up a technical team that can handle deployment and maintenance. Two are administrators. One is a security admin and the other is a network admin. Those are the two that mostly manage everything and have the rights to do so.
