An easy to manage solution that streamlines processes and management

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution as an internet firewall, and a VPN concentrator.

Pros and Cons

  • "The SL VPNs are the most valuable feature. I have a lot of systems out of the head office that need to connect to the local networks, and they all connect wirelessly via the Sophos VPN client."
  • "The initial set up process can be a little tricky, especially when you are registering with Sophos using your registration number. Setup is not necessarily complex, but it's not trouble-free. You do have connectivity issues at the initial setup with registering the device on the Sophos platform to access the advanced features. It doesn't always go through the first time around. That may be an issue with the quality of our automation. I'm not sure exactly what it is."

What other advice do I have?

We use the on-premises deployment model. We definitely plan to increase the usage and also add high variability too. Right now, it is the main internet gateway and firewall for my network. We're using both Sophos XG and Sophos UTM. I would warn those considering implementation that, once you've got it, you're stuck with it. You can't really increase the capacity very much beyond what you have. It's always good to have the expertise available to take care of the box because even though it's a lot easier than the Cisco ASA, you still need someone that has a little expertise in managing it. You…

Good filtering features but has terrible technical support

What is our primary use case?

We were developing something called a remote monitoring center and we wanted to have many plans logging into and having a VPN connection to their networks.

Pros and Cons

  • "The filtering was very good."
  • "Technical support was very bad because the supplier who sold it to us, wasn't very supportive, and he wouldn't giving us direct links to the OEM."

What other advice do I have?

We've actually stopped using it. We switched to FortiGate because we had side to side VPNs that were are actually bringing issues with the UTM itself, so we had to swap it over. I would rate the overall solution a six out of 10. There's room for improvement. I think it has the potential to do so much, but it is limited to some features. Or maybe it didn't serve my purpose as I expected it to. That's why I now think there is a bit of reservation on my end for using the product. In terms of advice, I'd say that anyone going with the solution should really know the product before they purchase…

Good encryption detection, good administration capabilities, and one of the best on the market overall

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution for LAN connections.

Pros and Cons

  • "In terms of administration, it's perfect."
  • "The interface needs to be updated and simplified."

What other advice do I have?

We used to be on the cloud, but we phased it out more than a year ago. I'd recommend the solution. It's one of the best on the market. It's great for financial services institutions. Security is important because of the type of companies that are typically dealing with it. I'd advise that users use it within a firewall, to create a double layer of protection or something similar. I'd rate the solution eight out of ten, especially when comparing it to other solutions.

Good SIEM and a dynamic VPN with good scalability

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution specifically for the security of our environments.

Pros and Cons

  • "Their GPS possibilities and the security that it has, especially the SD-WAN functionality, is very good."
  • "If you have another brand of VPN where you have to put an SSL VPN between two devices, Barracuda doesn't support that at a certain point. You can't actually build the VPN between Barracuda and a different device of a different brand."

What other advice do I have?

We are a Barracuda partner. We have firewalls in all of our data centers and have a total of around 200 firewalls. I would advise others that it's really a good product for SD-WAN, and for security. I would advise them to consider other products as well. Companies should certainly consider it for security features. For us, it's probably more of an SD-WAN product to really set up good connections between sites, but not a really in-depth security product per se. If a company needs more security, they should look at and compare different products that may really focus more on the security aspect…

User friendly with pretty good GUI and easy troubleshooting capabilities

Pros and Cons

  • "Troubleshooting with the solution is quite easy. If you compare the process to, for example, Fortigate, Juniper is much easier."
  • "While the GUI is pretty good on the Juniper side, there can still be tweaks made to it that will make it even better."

What other advice do I have?

Our client is a medium, small branch company. When they purchased this firewall, they understood that they could use it for a couple of years. I have a client that works with Juniper 4200 and 4300 and they find the solution to be very user-friendly. Overall, I would recommend the solution as it is easy to use and has a pretty good GUI. Customers really seem to like it. In general, on a scale from one to ten, I would rate it at an eight.
