BitLocker Overview:
BitLocker is Microsoft’s full disk encryption solution, which protects all of your data from theft, hacking or loss. BitLocker does this by encrypting the entire drive that hosts your Windows operating system and all your data.
BitLocker is available for all devices, including portable storage devices (such as external hard drives and USB flash drives). These portable devices are supported by a feature called BitLocker To Go, which is included in Windows 7 and 8, and in Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2012. In Windows XP, encrypted devices can be read, but not written to, using the BitLocker To Go Reader program.
BitLockerPricing & Products:
There is no standalone BitLocker pricing available online, as BitLocker is included as part of a total Windows license. Specifically, BitLocker is a component of Windows 7 and Windows Vista (Ultimate and Enterprise Editions), and is also included in the Enterprise and Pro editions of Windows 8, and also Windows RT. You’ll also automatically receive this Endpoint Encryption and Mobile Data Protection product with your Windows 2008, Windows 2008 R2, and Windows 2012 license.
To implement BitLocker encryption, you would choose from three authentication mechanisms:
- Transparent Operation Mode – User logs into Windows as usual.
- USB Key Mode – To boot up the secured operating system, the user needs to insert a USB with a start-up key.
- User Authentication Mode – User needs to type in a pre-boot pin for authentication purposes.
