Azul Zing Overview

What is Azul Zing?

Zing is an advanced Java runtime (JVM) designed for enterprise workloads that require any combination of large memory, high transaction rates, low latency, consistent response times or high sustained throughput. Zing eliminates Java garbage collection as a factor in production, and conforms to the Java SE standard for Java SE 8, 7, and 6.

It has helped us improve our latency performance drastically
As a large scale high performance trading platform serving the high frequency trading community, latency has always been critical for our clients. Before using Azul Zing JVM, we would have had to spend a lot of effort tuning our JVM GC and profiling our application to minimize latency, which is sometimes very unpredictable due to Java GC. Azul Zing solved our Java GC problem. With minimal effort, Zing has helped us improve our latency performance drastically. There are no more jitters or pauses that used to require hours or days of research to resolve in our production environment. Zing has freed our development resources to focus on our core business.  However, like every other great product, there is always something that can be improved. Although Azul claims to have a fast warm up, we…

What other advice do I have?

Overall, we think Azul/Zing is a great product for low latency, mission-critical applications.

It has pauseless garbage collection. It was almost a drop-in replacement for the Oracle JVM.

What other advice do I have?

For many classes of applications, alternative JVMs might provide sufficient low-pause operation that Zing is not required. That being said, we don't use the 'ultra large heap capability' of Zing that many applications would benefit from.

We no longer need to concern ourselves with tuning the garbage collector or coding around it, but the profiling tools lag behind those available for Oracle's Java implementation.

What other advice do I have?

Follow the supplied tuning guidelines and ensure that the tunings are correctly applied before assessing performance.

I like the Pause-less JVM garbage collection on JVMs with heaps in the hundreds of gigabytes.

What other advice do I have?

Make sure you really need it, and if you do need it, it will save your life.

It has made it possible to spend time on developing new functions rather than optimizing old ones.

What is most valuable?

The non-stop garbage collector (C4 - Continuously Concurrent Compacting Collector) is the most valuable feature.

How has it helped my organization?

It has made it possible to spend time on developing new functions rather than optimizing old ones.

What needs improvement?

If possible, a better way to pinpoint the source line of a memory leak.

For how long have I used the solution?

Since August 2013, hence two years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

No issues encountered.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No issues encountered.

The C4 Pauseless Garbage Collection helps keep my applications continuously executing, although the tuning tool needs improvement.

What is most valuable?

Performance of the JVM, especially the C4 Pauseless Garbage Collection, for continuous application execution is the most valuable feature. Also, some of the support tooling (zvision, gcloganalyser, azulinspector) is valuable.

What needs improvement?

Improvements on the tooling for tuning the applications is needed.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

We had one issue reported and it was solved by Azul's support team.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

An issue happened in a production environment that stopped the system.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Not in testing.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service: 5/5. Technical Support: 4.5/5.
