Do you have any recommendation for design & architecture principles when building apps on Appian ?

Hi peers, 

I am a Principal Enterprise Architect at a large financial services firm.

In my organization, we use business workflow automation in multiple cases. Appian is our tool of choice, but we have many apps on it.

Can you please provide some guidelines for developers & designers to consider when looking at apps on Appian with/without - UI, DB, and external/internal system integrations?

Below are some guidelines that developers & designers could consider when looking at apps on Appian with/without UI, DB, and external/internal system integrations:



UI


When considering UI, developers & designers may have to think about the following:




    • The user experience, such as how users interact with the app in terms of ease of use and understanding

    • The look and feel of the app, such as its overall design

    • How accessible the app is, even for users with disabilities



DB


When considering DB, developers & designers may have to think about the following:




    • The data model, such as the storage and organization of data in the database

    • The database performance in terms of how well it handles the expected load?

    • The security of the database and how it is protected against unauthorized access



External/internal system integrations


When considering external/internal system integrations, developers & designers may have to think about the following:




    • The purpose of integrating the app with another system

    • What data needs to be exchanged between the two systems

    • How will the integration be secured?



Some additional guidelines designers and developers could follow:




  • Reusing components for easier maintenance and better scalability

  • App documentation

  • App testing

  • App monitoring
