IBM Planning Analytics Review

Integration- Cognos BI & TM1

I'm glad to see progress made on integrating TM1 and BI as it is sorely needed. TM1 is much more scalable than Enterprise Planning and our users love the fast refresh of reporting cubes from contributor cubes. However, they miss their BI reports. Replicating the functionality offered by the EP Framework Manager Extension is very difficult. We miss several features, most notably flattening of hierarchies and automatic generation of a base package from the model and not from individual cubes. We need a package so we can do links between cubes for validation reports. If TM1 is going to be "owned by Finance" as EP was, these features are crucial.

The frequent update of reports makes integration of TM1 and Cognos Business tool more desirable and efficient than earlier versions of the program with no such features. However, this new product needs improvement in certain areas such as report validation through report-cube linking, addition of BI reports, hierarchies and an automatic report generator features.

Do you have any idea whether these changes will be made to the product? If so, how soon can clients (users of this product) expect to access the new integrated product with enhanced features?

My opinion is that Cognos TM1 is one of the best business application development platforms, and it has a good performance because of it's in-memory OLAP engine. Another pros are that it is quite scalable, easy to setup and migrate to a new environment. But, as a con, it lacks a pretty user interface.

Definitely the fast in-memory processing of calculations and the flexibility to build various application solutions to meet the business need is some of the biggest strengths of the tool. The biggest determinant is the skill and knowledge of the developer/ architect.
