What do you think of HPE StoreVirtual?

Improvements to My Organization Shared storage in the organization allowed for higher availability and simplified server maintenance. • Valuable Features Enables us to build highly available shared storage from a standard rack server, such as HPE Proliant DL. However, it is not limited to that. Thin provisioning lets us get the most value from the hard drives. I found the architecture to have less single point failure than a traditional SAN. • Room for Improvement Configuration of application integrated snapshots for VMware is convoluted and it did not work immediately. • Stability Issues In terms of stability, the optional MEM (Multipath Enhancement Module) was unstable in one installation with 1GB iSCSI network. Long running, intensive file copying tasks between VMs...

    What is most valuable?

Built-in redundancy for both storage nodes and network gives us peace of mind in case of a hardware failure, be it a storage node or a network component. The speed of the storage solution also allows us to provide service to applications that... more»

How has it helped my organization?

With StorPool we were able to build live failover on top of our LXC infrastructure. This allows us both to live-migrate containers between compute nodes without any downtime and, in case of an entire node suffering any type of failure, we can... more»

    What needs improvement?

We have generally been happy with StorPool's product. As previously mentioned we haven't had any issues since deploying their solution. The only place we feel they could improve is the time it takes to bring new features to production.

    What is most valuable?

LizardFS allows storing data across several nodes (which run on commodity hardware, even inside virtual machines) and also has a built-in HA mechanism. This works very well if failover can be done in a manual or simple way (e.g. by using... more»

How has it helped my organization?

We have been running LizardFS for a while now, but only inside a testing environment. It will be deployed to production soon and it will help to make specific files available inside several datacenters in a very fast and efficient way.... more»

    What needs improvement?

Well, if you don't have a support contract and therefore don't have acess to the automated failover mechanism, you need to build it yourself. This can be achieved by using common open source software, but you will need to know what you are... more»

What do you think of EMC ViPR?

PART I During the recent EMCworld event in Las Vegas among other things, EMC announced ViPR (read announcement here). Note that this ViPR is not the same EMC Viper project from a few years ago that was focused on data footprint reduction (DFR) including dedupe. ViPR has been in the works for a couple of years taking a step back rethinking how storage is can be used going forward. ViPR is not a technology creation developed in a vacuum instead includes customer feedback, wants and needs. Its core themes are extensible, open and scalable. On the other hand, ViPR addresses plenty of buzzword bingo themes including: Agility, flexibility, multi-tenancy, orchestration Virtual appliance and control plane Data services and storage management IT as a Service (ITaaS) and...

    What is most valuable?

Automatic rebalancing is the feature saving administration time, and also auto rebuilding. Enterprise storage IOPS limiting is also good.

How has it helped my organization?

The idea was born from pre-sales requests for storage resources. The primary goal was to have a storage solution where you do not have to invest a large amount of money just to start, and have idle resources, yet have a locally supported... more»

    What needs improvement?

    * Ecosystem around the product: There is no built-in system for viewing history data, such as volume IOPS. We have to provide graphing by Prometheus and Grafana, which would be a good new feature in ScaleIO. * The next good new feature would... more»

    What is most valuable?

Incredible IOPS increase in storage: IOPS is required to fulfill a disk job faster. It is input/output per second. When you request a report on your SQL server, you need as much as IOPS you can. So many IT guys put their most important... more»

How has it helped my organization?

Basically, our company needs IOPS to solve the bottleneck on the storage side, but storage upgrade costs were awful. Instead, we chose FVP and achieved IOPS values nearly 6-10 times faster without any hardware upgrade.

    What needs improvement?

Right now, you can only use this technology in VMware environments. Definitely supporting different OS and hypervisor systems would help this product reach a much larger community. This issue has not actually affected me. However, other... more»
