What is BMC TrueSight App Visibility Manager [EOL]?
The AppSight Application Problem Resolution system automates problem resolution processes during the testing and maintenance phases of the application lifecycle. When a problem occurs, the BMC AppSight Black Box captures the synchronized problem history in a log that can be communicated to the entire problem resolution team, much like a black box flight recorder in an aircraft. BMC AppSight Black Box operates with an extremely low performance impact and requires no modifications to the application or system. With the black box log, those involved in problem triage and resolution can replay, rather than recreate, any reported problems, eliminating up to 70 percent of the cycle time typically consumed by root cause analysis.

It has the ability to provide run-time production problem resolution, but while the instrumentation is powerful, it can overwhelm the system and cause instability.

Full video and client level capture and recording of user sessions

Extremely flexible deployment including connected mode (agent connects to controller) or standalone agent recording. The solution also provides the ability to allow clients to navigate to a url and execute the recording workflow using a "light agent approach"

Ability to provide diagnostics with the same agent for JVM/IIS tier in addition to deep granularity and visibility at OS level

Improvements to My Organization

Provided rapid ability to triage and diagnose customer production environments- exercises that normally would take weeks could be accomplished in hours with AppSight

Ability to provide run-time production problem resolution capabilities

Allowed onshore testing teams to collaborate very effectively with offshore development teams via the pre-production workflow features offered by AppSight

Yes, BMC AppSight is similar to other legacy APR/APM tools requires incremental infrastructure (servers and storage) to be provisioned as the agent deployment increases.

Currently, the service levels offered by BMC for this solution are very poor. Prior to 2012, the service levels for this product were excellent due to a very talented team maintained at BMC

Initial set up requires assistance from subject matter experts due to complexity and variety of deployment options and the potential for introducing instability

Implementation Team

Initial deployments were assisted by BMC technical services, thereafter the Scicom team grew this expertise in house


Depending on workflow and deployments and situations- ROI can be extremely high to marginal due to technical expertise required to sustain an enterprise deployment. ROI for AppSight should be calculated using several dimensions including reduction in development tickets, QA roundtrips and MTTR for production incidents.

Pricing, Setup Cost and Licensing

Evaluate your resource needs for this tool and be honest about use cases- based on that ensure that your license sizing is not "overboard".

Ensure a strong technical SME with development or engineering background is available to support this products implementation.
