openSUSE Leap Overview

openSUSE Leap is the #9 ranked solution in our list of top Operating Systems for Business. It is most often compared to SUSE Linux Enterprise: openSUSE Leap vs SUSE Linux Enterprise

What is openSUSE Leap?

openSUSE Leap is a brand new way of building openSUSE and is new type of hybrid Linux distribution. Leap uses source from SUSE Linux Enterprise (SLE), which gives Leap a level of stability unmatched by other Linux distributions, and combines that with community developments to give users, developers and sysadmins the best stable Linux experience available. Contributor and enterprise efforts for Leap bridge a gap between matured packages and newer packages found in openSUSE’s other distribution Tumbleweed.

A stable solution with reasonable support for a non-paid licence

What is our primary use case?

This solution is for private use.

What is most valuable?

The features that I have found most valuable are: Stable - it just runs without the necessity to reboot. Reasonable support for an open source product without a paid license. The Zypper update tool

What needs improvement?

Somehow the change from OS12.x via 13.x to Leap was a bit bumpy and some old issues seemed to reappear. This would not affect a user that chooses this distribution from a fresh start.

For how long have I used the solution?

More than ten years.
