What is most valuable?

Tape Management is as vital to a shop as anything else. It has more features than I could name, but no other tape product is better. CA 1 Tape is a complete package that manages all of your tapes. Create/write/catalog, retention, delete. There are queries and reports, which are needed to know when/where/length keeping, etc., in order to track them or find out current status. Each of these functions is managed for every tape there is, one being required for the next. Each is a bit more involved than it may seem, but 100% necessary. Beyond these functions, each of them vital, are "fix" types of… more»

What other advice do I have?

It has been around for years. It came from UCCEL (and I was working way back then). It is the best out there, but planning is essential.

What is most valuable?

Mainly, we use the product to manage the tapes. It's so stable that we only use the graphical interface of the virtual tapes. Sometimes we use it to review some files to… more»

How has it helped my organization?

It has become easy to backup and archive all our system data and financial data. It helps us mainly in managing the backup of our databases, and it is easy to retrieve… more»

What needs improvement?

When we want to interface the CA 1 product with other vendors, IBM or others, it is difficult to interface it with them, because you need some exits, you need to compile… more»

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I don't have any idea about pricing, my manager takes care of it.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

The first solution that we had was CA Dynam/T. It was on z/VSE. When we switched to z/OS, the only choice that we had with CA technology was CA 1.

What other advice do I have?

It's very stable. From the day we started using the product, we haven't needed to touch it. It works fine.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We looked at IBM RMM, but we didn't choose it.

What is most valuable?

At this point, we use it a lot for our DR and our business continuity stuff, our tape management, which is what we heavily rely on it for. To me, the CA 1 tool is the industry standard. I personally enjoy the fact that I get great support… more»

How has it helped my organization?

The stability has improved my organization. It's reliable. In our line of work, we need to be able to recover things; and being able to rely on a product and know that it's going to work. We don't even think twice about it.

What needs improvement?

Providing areas with room for improvement is a tough one because it really is the industry standard. It's such a good tool. At this point, I think I need a little bit better understanding, to be honest, on some of the stuff that they do… more»

What other advice do I have?

I have given it a perfect rating because of how well it has worked for us. I really don't have issues with it. When it comes to maintenance, when it comes to getting an upgrade or any of those things, they work with you, they work for you… more»

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I don't really even know of any other tape management vendors, to be honest. There is an ASG vendor. They don't have the best reputation, with me, anyway.

What do you think of CA 1 Tape Management ?

Valuable Features

My primary job is to make backups, backups a lot of backups. So being able to find out about where my data is, where my files are, and what tapes are used, is very valuable to me.

Improvements to My Organization

CA 1 is our intake management system, and it's just a one of the best products out there. I have worked with other ones like IBM, but CA 1 is the best. And it's easy to use.

Room for Improvement

Sometimes it doesn't detect all chaining errors and the reporting on them could be improved as well.

Deployment Issues

We've used it for over 20 years.

Stability Issues

CA 1 is stable all the time.

Scalability Issues

Very scalable. No problem.

Customer Service and Technical Support

I haven't had to use them.

Initial Setup

I wasn't involved in…

What is CA 1 Tape Management ?

CA 1 Tape Management (CA 1) is designed to simplify and unify the management and protection of z/OS tape data sets and volumes. It automates day-to-day z/OS tape management tasks to save your organization time and money. It enables a higher level of integrity for tape data while providing comprehensive protection against the inadvertent destruction of tape files. CA 1 helps you maintain data integrity, providing tools to continually check your data and prevent overwriting. To give you greater control, a Web-based Graphical Management Interface streams detailed tape volume information and provides a common platform for more efficient management practices.
