SAP S4HANA Overview

SAP S4HANA is the #5 ranked solution in our list of top ERP tools. It is most often compared to SAP Business One: SAP S4HANA vs SAP Business One

What is SAP S4HANA?

SAP S/4HANA stands for SAP Suite 4 HANA. It is a next-generation integrated enterprise resource planning (ERP) software that is designed for businesses of all sizes, in all industries, that require deep and broad functionality combined with a high degree of flexibility. SAP S/4HANA was launched in 2015 and been adopted by more than 3,200 customers over a period of sixteen months. SAP S/4HANA is materially different from anything SAP has done before and represents the company’s biggest innovation since SAP R/3.

SAP S/4HANA is intended to provide a digital core for an organization. It is fully architected for the most advanced in-memory platform, SAP HANA, and is designed on the most modern design principles with the SAP Fiori user experience to create a personalized and simple feel on users’ device of choice (tablet, laptop, mobile). SAP S/4HANA aims to simplify an organizations’ system landscape and reduce total cost of ownership by shrinking the data footprint while at the same time improving productivity levels in the form of higher throughput. S/4HANA can be deployed either on premise, in the cloud, or in a hybrid combination for quick time-to-value. Timelines for cloud deployments average around six months.

SAP S/4HANA is designed to drive business innovation by connecting people, devices, and business networks in real time to support the development of new business models. It will also help accelerate the adoption of, and connection to, the Internet of Things and Big Data. SAP S/4HANA can analyze big data at unprecedented speed allowing users to access real-time information from anywhere, any way they’d like and thus help managers make truly insightful decisions. The simplified data model allows customers to reimagine their IT, helping to drive lower costs and deliver IT efficiency. This, coupled with the SAP S/4HANA prediction and simulation capabilities allow it to anticipate the impact of business outcomes. By doing all the above, SAP S/4HANA aims to provide ultimate sophistication in the simplest possible manner.

Complicated and robust, this suite delivers a total solution with rigorous and exhaustive planning

What is our primary use case?

Our company analyzes material inventory and then processes the financial accounting which is handled by the system we created using the product.

Pros and Cons

  • "It is a very powerful, highly customizable tool."
  • "It requires a lot of planning to implement the product correctly."

What other advice do I have?

My recommendation to people considering S/4HANA as an ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) is to invest in it if they can afford it and need it. But, I strongly recommend that the implementation should be considered very carefully. SAP software is a very capable solution but it is only worth it if you approach it knowing that you will be spending three, four, or five years just to be able to understand it fully. It is not just an investment in capital, it is an investment in learning and time. It is definitely a good product. It is costly and needs a quality team for maintaining and integrating…

Stable with a straightforward setup and good documentation

Pros and Cons

  • "The solution can scale well."
  • "We would like to see more DevOps capabilities in the future."

What other advice do I have?

We are customers and end-users. We have around 25 different SAP products. We are using SAP S/4HANA in our company. The production and the test systems are deployed in the virtual private cloud on-premise, and we have sandbox development and quality systems are deployed in the Azure public cloud. I'd rate the solution at an eight out of ten.

Scalable and stable with good cost optimization shipped on cloud solutions

What is our primary use case?

With our customers, we are currently administering their solution over SAP HANA and with different infrastructures such as cloud computing, AWS, Azure, GCP, and others that are also on-premise. We have customers with new implementations and we offer this product to them. We handle the technical installation, then the high availability solution, the disaster recovery, et cetera. We are doing the administration of all the landscapes and a sub-basic administration. In all the other cases we have, the customers are immigrating their solution from SAP HEC. That is the other server for SAP. We bring… more »

Pros and Cons

  • "The scalability is excellent, especially on cloud deployment models."
  • "Technical support has been declining. They aren't as responsive as they used to be."

What other advice do I have?

We are experts in the technical implementation of the product. We work with a variety of versions, and, of course, with eh latest 2020 updates. We deal with both cloud and on-premises deployment models. I'd advise potential new users to really think about their infrastructure and the features they would like. Everything should be looked at and discussed in advance, from security concerns to functional modules. The more you understand what you need, the more likely you will get a solution that you want - and that does what you need it to. Overall, I would rate the solution at an eight out of…

Robust but is still not 100% stable or scalable

What is our primary use case?

We are using using almost all of SAP S4HANA's modules, from production and planning to finance and controlling.

Pros and Cons

  • "In terms of its most valuable feature, I would say the finance module."
  • "The common issues being raised right now by the end users are mostly related to the usability."

What other advice do I have?

On a scale of one to ten, I would rate SAP S4HANA a seven.

Offers good performance, has a user-friendly interface and is great for finance

Pros and Cons

  • "The performance of the solution is excellent."
  • "The cost of the solution is quite high. It needs to be adjusted."

What other advice do I have?

We are not the end customer. We are the implementation providers. We have customers and implement the solution for them and offer support to them while they are using SAP, which is an enterprise solution. We will support any version from the previous version and also upgrade to the newest version, as per our client's needs. There are all kinds of versions of the solution that we support. We mainly work with the S/4, the core ERP solution, so the core S/4, and also the ECC, the previous version. A company needs to be aware that it's much more helpful to be knowledgeable in the product before…

Good support and analytics capabilities, and it is definitely scalable

What is our primary use case?

I am a consultant and SAP S4HANA is one of the products that I work with.

Pros and Cons

  • "From a technology standpoint, the theory and analytics are fascinating."
  • "Every year, when a new version is released, it comes with a very thick booklet of 300 or 400 pages and it is a little difficult to comprehend."

What other advice do I have?

For ERP, I do not recommend anything other than SAP 4/HANA. For other applications such as CRM and planning, I may recommend a different product. I think that the newest version is great and I think the idea should be to quickly push it to cloud completely. I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

Feature-rich and offers different deployment options, but the customization should be improved

What is our primary use case?

We are a pre-sales team and I have been working as a consultant for SAP S4HANA. Most often, we deal with manufacturing CPG customers. We prefer the complete SAP S4HANA Suite, with all of the functionalities, and the use cases are typically everything that is offered from the processes in that suite.

Pros and Cons

  • "The key modules that I find most valuable are material management (MM), financial accounting and controlling (FICO), and human resources (HR)."
  • "The two things that need to be improved are price and customization."

What other advice do I have?

I highly recommend this product for all SAP customers who want to digitize and have a core business suite of applications. I would rate this solution a seven out of ten.

Necessitated us tailoring our processes which has increased efficiency

What is our primary use case?

We are in the food business so the solution helps with our business processes as well as the financial aspect - sales, purchasing, manufacturing - all the core business processes across all these modules. I'm the vice president corporate IT and we are customers of SAP.

Pros and Cons

  • "Responsive, comprehensive and optimized solution."
  • "Lacking in some customizations."

What other advice do I have?

My key advice would be to get down your processes first before putting any new system in place. It's important to re-engineer the processes and streamline them before implementing IT solutions, whether it's SAP or any other thing. It's the process side that needs to be dealt with first. I would rate this solution a nine out of 10.
