You need a consultant to set up your SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence Platform environment because if you are making a cluster of business object servers, you need to know how clustering works and how to scale your environments. You need to do a lot of benchmarking and know about the number of reports and users.

About three to four developers use the platform, and I am responsible for maintaining and troubleshooting any issues they may encounter. Additionally, we have business analysts and users who utilize the platform to view data.

Manager Data Analytics and Interfaces at a healthcare company with 5,001-10,000 employees
For its implementation, we used a consultant, but he was not associated with SAP. We took the help of a gentleman who was DBA experienced in implementing this product in an Epic environment, but he was not an SAP employee.
For its maintenance, I have one staff member who's the admin of SAP. She has additional duties with the maintenance of this product, which probably takes up 10% of her time.

Business Intelligence & Data Management Director at a manufacturing company with 10,001+ employees
The first time we used it when SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence Platform was when it was not an SAP solution, it was owned by Business Strategies, we brought in consultants to deploy. Later we have created our own team who can manage the implementation.
We have one person who does the administration and upgrades of the solution.
View full review »We communicate with a vendor team as part of all our evaluations and implementations. This provides clarifications, resolutions, and additional features but mostly it was implemented an in-house by team.

We have our own team for maintenance within our company. We used to have five people, but we have scaled down to just two full-time employees. We also have a number of people who are available on request.

The implementation, maintenance, and updates can be done by staff within the company. There are times we have used local support or integrators in our area.

Mix of contractors and vendor. The vendor is skillful though overworked resources.
View full review »Did both cases. Even if you have an external vendor, make sure you who have an experienced lead in-house who knows how the organization works to guide the implementation team.
View full review »Initially a vendor, recommended by BO. They had the product installed multiple times on the server, it was a mess and had to be completely blown away and reinstalled. Since then, we’ve done it in-house.

Strongly recommend a vendor team for the initial period. Make sure they interface heavily with network, DB and DW folks.

Always determine your prerequisites before you kick off remotely or onsite. It can save a lot of grief. Have a detailed SOW and project plan that you adhere to as much as possible, but be flexible.
View full review »A mix of both, before moving forward with the upgrade the vendor gave us suggestions on what we needed to do after looking at our current system. They were helpful in that initial stage of the upgrade, but the actual upgrade was done by an in-house team.

I did the installation.

I worked for both vendor teams and in-house teams. I have been involved in the implementation of complex BI solutions on the SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise platform in major USA and Canadian companies across different industries.
For successful implementation, you need a technical expert who has specialized in the area of Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) with in-depth knowledge of the data warehouse lifecycle processes (DWH design and ETL development) and extensive hands-on experience with both the SAP Enterprise Information Management (SAP Data Services) technology stack and the SAP BusinessObjects reporting products stack (IDT, Universe, Web Intelligence, Designer, Dashboards).
The manager should be from the in-house (for decision making) team and the technical experts should be from the outside (vendors and consultants).
