Oracle Database has two different types of licenses. One is the Named User, and the other is the Oracle Processor. So Oracle Named User will cost you about $950 per license, and Oracle Processor will cost you around $47,500 per processor. And on the Named User part, you need a minimum number of users to ensure that you'll buy the minimum number of licenses. So for Enterprise Edition, the minimum requirement is 25 Named Users.

And you need to pay to add options and packs. All the options and packs are available at extra cost, but Enterprise Edition includes Spatial and Graph at no extra cost. Starting last year, Oracle offered Spatial and Graph for free with the Enterprise Edition. Then there is Standard Edition, a minimal deployment option. So you can deploy Standard Edition on a server with a maximum of two sockets. That's why Enterprise Edition is typical in most cluster and complex environments.

The cost of Oracle Database is so high if you compare it to other vendors. Therefore you have to study your solution and know exactly which features you want; this will minimize the cost and licensing price. For that, Oracle provides different types of DB such as EE, SE, SE1, etc. depending on what the clients want.

You buy it when you need it, and then you pay the maintenance. We bought the licenses over 10 years ago. We haven't changed our licenses. We are not buying new licenses, and we are not looking at other devices. So, it is difficult to say whether it is cheap or expensive. There is nothing to compare to.

The additional options, such as a rack, partitioning, diagnostics, or tuning, are expensive.

Oracle Database could make the documentation better around licensing. The way you have to access software from Oracle is difficult. You have to go through the licensing lawyer to understand what your reach is when you subscribe to one unit. I wish the documents were easier to understand for everyone. This is a problem I have always grappled with and it's not changed. Having clarity is even more important now that I'm thinking of having a hybrid setup for the database in the cloud for high availability.

The cost of the solution is reasonable. It costs approximately $4,000 with some extra features we have.

The main issue where I feel that Oracle still has a problem is with the licensing. Licensing is still expensive and the reason why today most startups use other, cheaper databases. Those other databases are much less sophisticated than Oracle. I hope that in the future, Oracle will reach a level where it can introduce its database with different compliances and different licenses so that companies will be able to use to it and it will be competitive with other databases in the market.

Generally, when you buy Oracle Database, and if you're buying it for your own data center on the on-prem side, you have to go by the processor cores and the list price is around $47,500 for the enterprise edition per core.

It is a perpetual license; it is not something that you worry about on monthly basis. That said, they do have options now for the subscription-based model, however, there are more data points to be looked at. They have an offering called the data cloud and customer which is a subscription-based model. They can give you hardware plus some software licenses as well.

When it comes to Oracle and all the licensing policy that they have is very complex, the type of audits that they do is not really something that people welcome.

When people talk about Oracle, especially Database, most of them mention that Oracle is an expensive product. However, if it's suitable or not or if it really is "expensive" depends on their requirements. Today, Oracle is one of the best choices, regardless of pricing.

Even though on paper their pricing looks expensive, everything can be negotiated. Companies may be able to come to an understanding with Oracle at a price point they can accept.

The license cost of Oracle Database is more expensive, and this could result in some clients moving away from it. When it comes to the licensing for the processor, it becomes more expensive, but it could become cheaper when you know how to use an ODA. When you're using other servers, the licensing becomes more expensive.

Additional charges could also come from Oracle technical support, but there is a lot of documentation on the website, and you can also get solutions from the Oracle Community as a workaround.

Bargain with the sales representative for good discounts - particularly if you buy several licences at once. But beware when buying multiple licenses together you get them on a single CSI, which may give trouble in future if you need to cancel one license out of the total, as that in principle means cancelling all licences and renegotiating so you may get new prices with less discount on the yearly support fees for the licences you have left. Research all the things that actually is possible with the basic licence so you get your value-for-money and only pay for options if you really need them.

Oracle is expensive, but very good. You get quality for the price you pay.

Everything is good but pricing-wise, it's still struggling with that. It's very difficult to justify their costs sometimes in the board room.

The price of Oracle Database is too expensive and especially for individual environments. The pricing model is not clear, if I want to run it on a virtual environment, I still need to license the whole physical box.

We're just a customer and we have the licensed product. We are continuously updating the license on an annual basis.

It's a standard license, with a worldwide standard licensing cost for Oracle that we are paying. The fees are at about 22%.

Oracle's licensing is kind of a con. It's the expense of it depending on all of the features that you want. That would be the main consideration I think as a company when they're looking at different database vendors. Plus, just what I mentioned, the stability and the security aspects of it.

The price of Oracle Database is quite high compared to other solutions. It has a lot of options, such as security for partitioning and real application clusters. These options are not for free. Once you want to use it, you have to pay extra.

Use licensing with caution, read the fine print. :) ?This is an important point and usually it's not skipped by the companies paying for the license. Nonetheless, Oracle supports your applications and database only if Oracle has certified the ?hardware and software that the companies have used to build and deploy their applications and databases on; which basically means that you have to use industry-standard hardware and software.

It is possible that your hardware is not supported or has been desupported for a specific version of the Oracle product, so just remember to read the fine print before you deploy your applications.

President at a tech consulting company with 51-200 employees

If you look at the price point with it and how they structure the licensing, it is definitely going to be one of the more expensive ones. You do get everything with it because they throw everything in with the kitchen sink. If they could pare down the solution, then you could just choose the pieces that you want and maybe pricing might be a little bit more along the lines of what customers could use. It is definitely on the more expensive side.

Oracle Specialist at a tech company with 10,001+ employees

I think it's very expensive when compared to the others. Depending on the size of the company, smaller ones will not choose Oracle because they can get fixed solutions or less expensive solutions. If I were Oracle, I would create a solution that would serve these small companies for a better price, maybe with a lot less options, but not as expensive as some other options.

It is on the higher side, so it’s better for big enterprises. However, small and medium business can explore cheaper versions of the same product, which doesn’t offer all benefits of the enterprise version, but it will still be good enough compared to almost any other database solution.
