Jira Implementation Team

GH
Senior Principal Engineer at a consultancy with 1-10 employees

Its implementation was an in-house job.

In terms of maintenance, I take care of its maintenance. Its maintenance is minimum, and only one person is required. You can easily run backups. We use Microsoft SQL Server for backend data management, and we automate the backups. We do daily backups, etc. If anything goes wrong with the tool we have, we can just rebuild it from scratch, and we will be fine because our data is there.

They also have built-in backup utilities that you can use. There is an XML-based one, which I do like to use from time to time just as an alternate. So, you do have different options.

A third-party vendor handles deployment. They will automatically execute the small instructions. Based on that, they will create a charge code, seek approval from management, and then proceed to deploy the particular feature. While auto-deployment is happening, we'll validate it once it's done. If everything is good, we'll release it. If there are any challenges, we'll roll it back.

I wasn't here at the initial setup of Jira, however, in our company, we have a Jira administrator. Whenever we have a project to review and need to know how it's laid out and how we can place them better, etc, it goes through this person. She analyzes the needs and does it for us.

She knows the tool pretty extensively, but we don't rely on external consultants to do it. We have somebody from our company who does it for us and acts as our own Jira professional. They would be the one that basically helps you with the setup for your project needs.

We have our own compliance team who applies security patches and those patches are available from Jira directly. The maintenance is pretty easy and we pay a maintenance fee for Jira software. If there is any issue with downtime or service is completely stopped and we are not able to handle it, Atlassian provides us their support. Maintenance is not much of an issue with Jira.

Senior Architect at Second Step

In terms of configuring the product to be compatible with our organization, we did consult with or defer to anyone - unless it was maybe just Jira support. That likely didn't happen however as we are a technology company. We are a development company. Our in-house Jira administrative team is capable of handling things. They did not need to defer to anyone.

IT Release Manager at a financial services firm with 1,001-5,000 employees

It was implemented by a third-party vendor. It requires maintenance, but it is not so difficult to maintain. For maintenance and administration, we have an internal Jira service desk.

You need to do upgrades because you tend to have requirements from different stakeholders. You also have different add-ons and plugins, and Jira also keeps on releasing new versions that might be useful.

There were initially eight people involved in the maintenance of the solution and deployment of updates. They had the people to whom they answered. We are talking about a large-scale effort. Without taking into account the Jira support line, I would say there were around 12 people managing and administering this version. For our specific team, there were around three. They were the actual decision makers.

We had our vendor help to set up originally. Later, we made some customizations by other means. But because this is still at a very early age for us, it's a bit random on previous customizations. There were some blockages for people to understand from different perspectives. But I think so far the business people may not understand those procedures because it was originally designed for the coders and for the software development business.

We do it on our own, but we have some strong support. We have outside support in case of any problem with it.

In terms of maintenance, you have to do the updates. You have to upgrade the system and handle the add-ons versions. If you build the inside environment in the Jira, you always have to fast forward to the project.

We have two teams to handle the maintenance. For standard maintenance, where you are upgrading the versions, we have an IT professional team for it. For the inside environment of the Jira projects and automation functions, we have a service management team.
