Reliable and awarded bandwidth analysis that provides important information about performance and traffic

What is our primary use case?

We are a reseller of SolarWinds, so that is our primary use. SolarWinds Network Bandwidth Analyzer is actually a marketing name. That is the brand name of a couple of products in a suite. The main product of the network management suite is NPM, or the Network Performance Monitor, which is qualified as a global market-leading product and has won a lot of awards in the past few years. It is the flagship for network management software. The cool thing about that product is that you can use it to also monitor your network cloud connections through the internet. That is quite a unique feature. With… more »

Pros and Cons

  • "A product that is well-tested and trusted in demanding situations."
  • "The only thing that can be improved is to continually add to the existing capabilities of the product."

What other advice do I have?

My advice to people who are coming to SolarWinds is that they do a training on the website and take advantage of exploring the trial version. The free trial will allow them to use the product and get to know the features before paying for it. I always recommend that smaller organizations start small. You can make the initial purchase of a very simple license which is not very expensive. Then you can build it out later to a bigger scale and then use the software company-wide. So the advice is really to begin small and build it out and take more licenses as you need them. You can pick the…

Provides valuable security knowledge and helps us improve network performance

What is our primary use case?

From a security perspective, we are watching for behind the scenes data exfiltration, or tubulous, or malicious network traffic, that our other tools may not be detecting at a basic network layer. We are also using it for performance issues in trying to figure out if a site is experiencing issues with slowness. Also, we try to determine things like whether we are exceeding the bandwidth of the link or whether there is a bottleneck or something that's not negotiating correctly on the network. Also, we use it for TAP to try and do inline network traffic analysis from a security perspective or… more »

Pros and Cons

  • "It has definitely helped us improve our mean time to resolution on network issues."
  • "Many of these tools require extensive on-premises hardware to run."

What other advice do I have?

We are using the previous version. Our situation was that it was really expensive to keep up maintenance and the hardware was about to go end of life, which meant that we had to purchase a new hardware stack. Also, we were trying to get out of the data center business, so keeping StealthWatch is not really an option. It doesn't fit where our company wants to go, but at the same time, it's one of three products out there that actually does what it does. Otherwise, you have to start linking NetFlow into the UEBA space. My advice for anybody who is considering StealthWatch is that if you're going…

Cost-effective and works well for Cisco switches, but the setup is difficult and time-consuming

What is our primary use case?

This is a network monitoring solution that I was playing around with to see if it would meet my needs.

Pros and Cons

  • "The most valuable feature is the support for monitoring Cisco switches."
  • "The main problem with Zabbix is that you have to spend time writing templates for all of the products that you have."

What other advice do I have?

My advice for anybody who is implementing Zabbix is to seek the help of somebody who has actually done it before. Otherwise, it's not worth their time. Also, find somebody who can provide you with the templates that you need, or who's got familiarity with building them. It is a good solution if you have the time to build the templates and figure it all out. This requires knowledge of SNMP, as well as all of the devices. Then, you have to put it into XML and create a template that Zabbix can use. It is not a straightforward solution. The reason that I stopped using Zabbix and bought…

Generates helpful reports in our hybrid environment

What is our primary use case?

This solution is being used by Saudi Customs, and there are different classifications of ports. We have land ports, airports, and dry ports. In total, we have almost forty-two remote sites with a semi-centralized data center. We have both on-premises and cloud-based deployments in a distributed system.

Pros and Cons

  • "The most valuable feature is the network-related reporting."
  • "The dashboard has some limitations and should be more user-friendly."

What other advice do I have?

We are using another product from the same vendor that's called Device Control. This product is for working on remote sites, and it is necessary because OpManager cannot fulfill our requirements. In Device Control you have the ability to troubleshoot, remote control, and you have inventory management. For anybody who is researching this type of solution, I would suggest doing a POC to see if this solution will satisfy your goals and requirements in your environment. This will help you with your selection. I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

Troubleshoots network congestion well, but is expensive

What is our primary use case?

We use this solution to control bandwidth congestion, and also for the recovery of unused data network ports.

Pros and Cons

  • "We're able to recover more expensive ports on our access line devices."
  • "If it had more detailed NetFlow information then it would be far better."

What other advice do I have?

This product provides some good functionality. However, the reporting is right to left, which is less than ideal, the cost is significantly high, and the NetFlow capabilities are lacking. My advice is to go with AKIPS, rather than this solution. I would rate this solution a seven out of ten.
