What is most valuable?

The solution allows us to set parameters on where our users can go. We can block certain sites or ads if we want to. The firewall capabilities are very good.

How has it helped my organization?

The solution helped us stop being policemen to our users. We don't have to run around telling people they can't do certain things. We can just not allow it and walk away from it. We're not out there seeing who is doing what, we just don't… more»

What needs improvement?

We're working with the entry-level appliances, so I don't know what the higher-end ones are like, however, on the entry-level models I would say commit speeds need to be improved. The appliances I'm working on are relatively old now. We're… more»

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I know the solution is not inexpensive. It depends on what you ultimately sign up for or whether you just want the warranty on the hardware.

What other advice do I have?

I'm not really a customer. I'm like a consultant. I'm an introduction expert. If I think a client needs a certain technology I point them in the direction of whoever sells it. I do go in and configure it, so I do have experience actually… more»

What is most valuable?

For myself, the UI is pretty much perfect. It's much easier to work with than Cisco's FirePOWER, for example. I prefer the way it is designed above everything else, even though Cisco may be better for a different reason. Fortigate is just… more»

What needs improvement?

The stability could be improved. I find Cisco to be more stable than Fortigate, which is I major differentiator between the two. I haven't really explored the cloud too much, as we deal mostly with an on-premises system. However, now with… more»

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

With Cisco, licensing is quite complex, but with Fortigate, you simply need to buy a bundle and they give you everything you'll require.

What other advice do I have?

We're resellers of both Cisco and Fortigate solutions. I'd advise other companies or users to give a try. The Virtual Appliance is very easy to set up. In terms of scalability, it's easy enough to expand out, especially if you compare it to… more»

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Right now, I'm also interested in learning more about Cisco, and how it compares to Fortigate. I know Cisco quite well, but I've never directly compared Cisco and Fortigate together before. Of course, I still believe I know Fortigate… more»

What is most valuable?

Our organization liked the fact that it wasn't just firewalls that handled addresses and ports. It also handles actual URL inspections. The solution is at the cutting edge of technology. The solution… more»

How has it helped my organization?

The solution gets the access controls down to an even more precise part of the network traffic. It's not just any user going to an IP address or going to a port to get on the network. It's very… more»

What needs improvement?

It's like anything else. What's good today might not be in a day, a week, a month, etc. The solution needs to constantly be adapting and updating. The solution needs a series of OS changes.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I don't have an idea of what the licensing costs are.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Prior to Palo Alto, we had been using Check Point. There wasn't a technical reason that we switched. As an organization, we just periodically switch technologies.

What other advice do I have?

I'd advise companies considering setting up the solution to make sure they have a trained team. If the team doesn't have any expertise with this type of firewall, then they've got to take some… more»

What is most valuable?

FortiGate as a product is very easy to configure. There is a lot of data now with switching IDS and IPS. It's a truly complete solution for our customers. It's a good idea to have the firewall connected to the switches. That way, the firewall is the controller of the switches. We like how the… more»

What needs improvement?

The solution's switches are lacking. They need more features added to them to build them out a bit. The switches are very simple if you compare them with other companies like Cisco or Aruba. Those organizations offer their clients much more. Technical support could be better. Some competitors have… more»

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing is good. They are especially fair when compared with other companies, like Palo Alto, for example, which can get quite expensive.

What other advice do I have?

We work with a lot of manufacturers of firewalls. It's normally Fortinet, however, we also work with Cisco, Palo Alto, and Sophos. My company works with Barracuda as well. To be honest, I am not a specialist with Barracuda. I normally don't work with that. That said, typically, when we work with… more»

What is most valuable?

The performance and licensing model are the best features of the solution. They have a system which can collect all of the performance data, and they show it on a very nice dashboard. On top of that, It has an open API. It's well… more»

How has it helped my organization?

The solution has improved our organization by being flexible and offering excellent features. This is the highest model. It includes all the features of ADC, which is load balancing, and it includes a web application firewall, application… more»

What needs improvement?

It would be good to have some deeper security measures implemented. The solution should go even deeper on the firewall level.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing varies. There is always the license for the device or for the virtual machine, and then there is the support which can be yearly, or every two, three, four, or five years. When you count all the features that you are getting… more»

What other advice do I have?

We use the on-premises deployment model. Some companies have longterm relationships with some other vendors. The thing is, they don't often know A10 networks. It's more difficult to sell this solution, because of the experience and… more»
