Jira Initial Setup
GH
Gesner Herard
Senior Principal Engineer at a consultancy with 1-10 employees
Its setup is semi intuitive. There are certain things for which you need to look at the instructions. It also depends on how complex your environment settings are.
Initially, back in 2008, it was a little bit more difficult, but they've improved the installation process. If you have a very basic setup, you can just pretty much install it right out of the box with maybe one or two changes. There're certain things for which you need to have some IT knowledge of your environment in order to be able to set it up. Other than that, they have really automated it pretty well. Jira is one of their keystone products.
Its initial deployment took hours or maybe days because there were things that I needed to understand, but they've improved it a great deal. You can pretty much be up and running within an hour, but it also depends on your environment.

View full review »Setting up on Windows is very easy, while on Linux, it's a bit more complicated. I would rate it around a seven out of ten. It is possible to deploy it both on the cloud and on-premises. The deployment duration varied based on whether it was on the cloud or a server. If it was on the cloud, it took slightly less time, while installing it on a server took anywhere from ten minutes to an hour.

If we are starting a project with a small team from scratch, we can have Jira up and running in about ten minutes. The deployment process is logging on, adding the users, and hitting the start button. It's very easy. The tool is deployed on the cloud. I recommend the cloud. It is usually better and the easiest.

IT Manager at a government with 10,001+ employees
It was straightforward and easy. You basically create an account for your department, and then you onboard your users. There is a subscription fee per user for each month through Confluence.
It took us a week to get it up and running. It involved reading, studying it, figuring it out, and then doing it. It was pretty simple to set up data and add users. So, we onboarded it within a week.
The challenge for us while setting it up was that we had to put it on a credit card, which is not a good thing for the government. Typically, the government likes to pay through a purchase order or procurement process, but because it was a monthly subscription fee, it had to be on a credit card. We had to use an executive card in order for us to pay the bill every month, which was really kind of a pain because our accounting office always had to make sure and check the number of users. They would ask if I had 15 users this month. I am the administrator of the application, so, of course, I know how many users are there. I can see how many users are there and how many are using it and remove them if they don't. I think the state just needs to modify its procurement process because I think ours is pretty old school. I don't think that Atlassian needs to adapt to ours, but that was the only challenge we had in setting it up and configuring.

Most of the time, we are working with the cloud-based one. So, we don't have to set up everything. It is all there. You just buy a monthly subscription package. I wasn't involved in the initial setup, however, we have a Jira administrator and they have a group, and that handles it. I implemented Jira for my teams. I added users to roles on the system. Roles such as developer, administrator, approval, managers, etc. That is all done by myself. In terms of that task, and setting up a project, it's fairly easy.
Implementation is a multi-year process. Right now, the whole company is on Jira. Whenever there's a new group, it gets added, and a new team is created. It's always a work in progress and it's not very time-consuming.
I would say the training of people on how to use Jira effectively takes some time. It's very intuitive, however, at the same time, a little training goes a long way in utilizing the software in a much better manner.

I wasn't involved in the initial setup of the whole thing. I was just a consumer. We were just migrating our data over from QC into Jira Xray and that migration process was okay.
We lost some data, however, in general, the assets were transferred over and we could continue there and leave the whole old world behind and start working on the new world.
From a migration perspective, it was almost seamless. Afterward, you just had to learn a little bit. That said, it's quite straightforward. The JQL query language was something new at the beginning yet easy to pick up without big pieces of training. You can train yourself pretty well with the documentation that's available on the internet. I was able to teach myself almost everything without having to go into any training.
I can't speak to the maintenance requirements involved. That's handled by another team entirely.

It was straightforward to set up Jira, even though it was on-prem. But to set up the supporting modules for Jira, like the web component (e.g. Apache) or the database component, requires a little bit more effort. The Jira application does provide support on that front, but the support is pretty limited, because they do not vouch for the other modules that aren't built in to Jira.
Apache is a web server that interacts with Jira and I think they should better support the deployment of Jira with web servers at any enterprise or cloud-level. That should be provided as part of the deployment journey itself. As it is currently, their support that helps us integrate Jira with Apache comes off a little short.

The Jira setup is a bit complicated because we're deploying it in our internal servers. So we have to manage a lot of things ourselves. For example, when the new version of Jira comes in, we have to patch our servers and update our certificates. And then, for deployment, we have pipelines that we need to trigger. That's not too hard, but the patching and upgrading can be complex.
If it's a smooth deployment, it just takes 30 minutes because we only have to replicate it on a different server. So currently, we have more than 20 servers. So every time we deploy, we create a replica on every server, which takes time because we have to verify that it's working. In total, it's about two hours of downtime in Jira, so we do this at night.
Currently, more than 10 people are involved with maintenance. For my team, I do the deployment and configurations. But if there is some fundamental change or a serious bug, a separate team handles this.

In terms of maintenance, pretty much everybody is maintaining their own instance. We've got somebody that manages what's in the cloud for the company, however, it's pretty much hands-off in terms of day-to-day support issues. We had a few people that were supporting it when there were problems, however, it's just a handful from what I understand.

We do have a team for maintenance and what takes the most time with any upgrade is going through the changes, the enhancements, the defect fixes, and things like that. The actual time that it takes to physically update it is pretty minimal. However, going through the documentation and meeting with the team to make sure that we have testing covered prior to upgrading is work. We have a test environment prior to pushing it to production. That's what really takes time. It's not the physical update. An update might take two and a half hours and there's a lot of data in there.

The initial setup is very good. I wouldn't say that it's very complicated. They have customization options for things like issue management. You can customize it based on your terminology and project.
For a simple set up, it may take around four hours. If it's a 20 member project, it's quite easy to set up Jira. But if it's to be made available enterprise-wide, it takes longer. I had complex projects where it took anywhere from three to four days or a week to set up. You should also note that it may take new users a week to understand it properly.
We tried to do a total uniform deployment, but it's not always possible because every project has some customization. A single user can deploy Jira. I have deployed and managed 20 to 22 users in a Jira instance. Basically, the Jira administrator creates the template. But if the project requires customization to write queries and run tests, that will require some additional skill.

I didn't attend this in the development phase. In testing, I did the same effort and it took me a month to set up while I was deploying a test stream. I worked on the testing workflow as well, the defect workflow. That said, I don't know how long it takes for them to configure Jira.

It is a cloud solution. It just requires licensing. Of course, some support would be required for all users of Jira, which could be in thousands. It might not be an easy task, but overall, I don't think a lot of time is spent on its maintenance and support. It is a very trustworthy service.

It was complex, but in a good way. We used a vendor called Service Rocket to help us through the process and they were magnificent. We spent several weeks with them as they got to know our process and needs to help tailor the setup solution. So it was complex in that we spent a lot of time closely examining our processes and workflows to make sure the solution fit accurately.

It is simple to initiate or install the product. It is easy and simple, but if you make some designs inside and build some projects with some automatization, it can be more complex.
We first tried to build the system inside the Docker environment, but it was not a success. So, we switched to the normal installation mode. Installing the product and making it work took just a few days. It included building servers and a database.

With Atlassian, either you can run the programs open to the world or behind the firewall. The default state for our systems is locked down, but Atlassian works best when their tools are able to connect to one another. This isn't a problem with the products, just an issue with our own infrastructure. I run local development versions of the tools on my laptop with no issues.

I have worked with both the hosted application and the cloud version. For the cloud, the initial setup is very easy. You can do it in basically two minutes and you're out but for the server, the setup entails a lot more.
This is quite understandable because you're going to be managing it by yourself, onsite. For the Cloud, it's pretty straightforward, but if it's the server version then you need a lot more focus and experience to be able to configure it correctly.
The last time I installed a server instance we had to do it overnight and it took me between four and six hours.

The initial setup required a bit of thinking on how to organize and when to use the different types of JIRA issues, what fields are relevant in the context of our team processes and what kind of dashboard information is required, not only for the team but also for the stakeholders. This is not so much JIRA related as it is process-related. Once all of this is agreed upon, JIRA makes things easy by selecting for example Agile SCRUM as methodology, configuring the appropriate issue screens and workflows, defining the relevant filters and adding widgets to the dashboards.

The initial setup's level of complexity varies. If you use the Next-Gen Project, you can get it up and running in, I would say, five minutes. That part's quite easy.
You can also just subscribe and you can get the free version. I really like that kind of subscription that you can start with quite a few features available. You can get it started for up to five to 10 users without any cost. Then, when you start getting the ball rolling or the projects rolling, you have to actually insert your credit cards to both get features unlocked, and also to add more people to the projects and to the solution.
If you want to, you can add on quite a lot of features and connect with the apps from the Atlassian marketplace. That's also a really nice possibility. You can just click, add apps and it takes about 30 seconds. Then you have added functionality injected to your solution.
